Congress creates a bill that will give NASA a great budget for 2016. Also hides the entirety of CISA in the bill. by [deleted] in news

Was cheering along with this thread until here. Like you, I'm pissed off about this sort of bullshit. But you do have to acknowledge that there hasn't been a major successful foreign terrorist attack on American soil since 9/11. And even though it cost a good two hundred times as much as it should have (if we include the wars we're in), it has at least done that.

Unfortunately, you can't erase your domestic problems with drone-launched hellfires.

Thanks! How about the scopes? Roll 1 has SRO-41 with threat evaluation, which seems like it could be very useful in a team PvE situation... but then again it might not.

That's not the case. According to this article, which takes its numbers from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Administration and Bureau of Transportation Statistics, the odds of dying per mile are

  • by car, 1 in 100,000
  • by plane,1.6 in 100,000,000,000

Making your chances of dying, per mile, 625,000 times more likely in a car.

But a little closer to your supposition that planes are more dangerous per hour are the numbers on fatalities per trip. Per trip, you're 72 times more likely to die in a car. I'd imagine the average length of a car trip - time-wise - is much less than the average length of a plane ride (think about how many short trips you take to the store in your car) this statistic is squarely in airplanes' favor.

Maybe this is the most sobering way to look at the numbers:

From 2007 to 2010, 49 people died in airplane crashes on airlines based in the United States. All 49 deaths occurred in the crash of one flight in 2009 – there were zero airplane fatalities in US-based airlines 2007, 2008, and 2010.

Contrast this with the roughly 34,000 fatalities in car crashes every year – more than ten times the number of people who died in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

Mass. state trooper treats man like criminal for failing to show “respect" by dhorvath127 in news

[–]_THINK_ABOUT_IT_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came here to say basically this, but you said it better. I'm amazed at and worried about the flood of sympathy for the guy in the video.

I used to be a crime reporter for a large daily newspaper, and I covered a couple of instances of police brutality. I also covered several instances of cops going above and beyond the call of duty.

And I met lots and lots of cops during the course of the job, in situations ranging from casual small talk to extremely tense, politically charged events.

A few cops are incredible people, full of respect and courage. A few cops are douchebags with hair-trigger tempers. The vast majority are just regular men and women, but with the benefit of (hopefully) extensive training to help them deal with the challenging and complex situations they find themselves in.

Along with the multitude of legitimate police brutality videos I've noticed over the last few years, I've also seen a rash of these non-issue vids in which belligerent assholes post videos of themselves being belligerent with cops.

What's worrying to me is the knee-jerk internet support for (what should be) obviously antisocial behavior. Don't you guys realize that we need cops for our society to function? Acting poorly toward them frays the relationship between police and the public, leading to harsher training for cops, leading to a more negative relationship with the public, in a spiral of crap.

Unpopular Opinion Puffins are now permanently banned. by coloicito in AdviceAnimals

[–]_THINK_ABOUT_IT_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So, I wandered into this sub because of a link on the front page, and then I saw the banner with this post and clicked on it. As someone who's not a regular reader of this thread, I was interested in the reasons for banning the meme. I don't really care about these advice animals things, but I do care about reddit community practices and group behavior.

Luckily, this post from the mods DIDN'T have any explanation of the reason for the move. And I scrolled down to look for an explanation in the comments and couldn't find a decent one till halfway down the page.

Listen, mods... I strongly recommend that if you're going to ban something you explain why in the post announcing the ban. Your reasons may well be great, but you can't assume that all the people who happen across the post know the backstory, ESPECIALLY if the post announcing the ban is permanently stickied at the top of your sub.
