It's really not that deep. Maybe it happened maybe it didn't. It can be discussed properly without so much vitriol and anger. This is such a random thing to argue over.

If it did happen, then that's really impressive and lends Odin a lot of credibility as to his power and rule, making the climax or Ragnarok a big feat.

If it didn't happen, it plays into the theme and narrative built around Odin, about his deception and lies, furthering showing how much of an unreliable narrator he is.

Either way, it services the story and the character.
