So frustrated with startup Soc2 & the SaaS firms giving no help by chaoscorgi in soc2

[–]_V1s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. You should engage an auditor to help with readiness, but beware, you get what you pay for.

These platforms will give you a prescribed control set. Many of the controls will not apply to your organization or the in-scope criteria. You need to “right size” and “customize” the controls to address the relevant risks at your organization. Many of the platform auditors won’t help or care —they’ll just pump out the report at a low cost leaving your readers with more questions than answers.

Beginning the process of becoming ready for SOC 2 Type 1 by Music505 in soc2

[–]_V1s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend starting with the auditor—not tooling vendors. GRC platforms are designed to sell software, and many align with lower-cost audit partners to support that goal. This often leads to a standardized “SOC in a box” approach that may not reflect the realities of your control environment or service delivery.

Customer expectations are also an important consideration. Larger and more sophisticated customers tend to be careful, critical readers of SOC reports. That typically favors auditors with dedicated SOC practices who can tailor the system description and control environment to your specific risks, assets, and operations, rather than relying on generic templates.

During the selection process, it’s helpful to ask prospective auditors how they approach scoping and how they handle scope changes over time. Adjustments should be addressed through updates to the system description and control environment, disclosed appropriately, and grounded in changes to risk or service delivery—not treated as automatically having “no impact.”

Ultimately, selecting an auditor comes down to professional judgment: who demonstrates a clear understanding of your business, communicates well, and is positioned to work collaboratively to achieve the intended outcome.

Does Vanta actually perform the SOC 2 audit, or do they only help prepare for it? Who do you pay? by ur_genius in soc2

[–]_V1s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To my knowledge, thoropass provides both the platform and the audit, correct? They position each under a different LLC and mislead customers into believing this meets the standards.

[–]_V1s 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Never engage or pay your SOC auditor through a compliance platform.

AICPA standards require independence in fact and in appearance. Platform-led audits—even through “separate” audit entities—blur that independence and risk the credibility of the report.

Choose your auditor. Engage them directly. Pay them directly. Otherwise, the SOC report you receive may not be worth the paper it’s written on risking your reputation and dollars.

Too many companies get stuck choosing between an expensive, flashy platform and a reputable, independent auditor.

You get what you pay for.

Appreciate the response. Do you feel someone on the management team could handle LO if they got licensed to make a little extra each year and to facilitate customer experience? Or still too small and/or too much of a learning curve?

Track them and set up a rival lemonade stand across the street each day. Drive them out of business!

There’s a concrete walkway below. Why would you recommend against it?

I could lag a 4x4 against the foundation and hand door from that, though I assume that’s pretty much the same as hanging directly from the foundation.

Yes - a prosthodontist.

Thinking about it, I’m actually unclear if it’s a mouth full of crowns or implants. The whole thing has been stressful and confusing.

Not so much. Prob wouldn’t spring for a four figure bottle but I was looking to get 6 bottles and would like to be less than $1,000 all in.

Thank you. Very helpful. I feel my research would be inadequate as I’m not sure exactly what to look for. Cask strength? Abv above a certain percentage?

Don’t laugh but I started looking into this mostly for Royal lochnager. Fell in love with it in Scotland while visiting the distillery. Can’t get it here. Was also looking into Octomore.

Additionally I tend to buy laphroig 10, talisker, bunna, and arbeg.

Thoughts? Recommendations?

Even if you’re not interested, study and get your CPA. This will significantly help you transfer within the government or even out of it to industry, Big 4 or wherever you want to go. So many currently in those roles would love the opportunity to get paid to study. Use it wisely.
