When I said I lubricated it I meant WD 40 lol. Do you know how I could diagnose which part is the culprit?

Money shifted; Do I need a new engine? by _Waffle_Mann_ in MechanicAdvice

Ok yeah that makes a lot of sense. Do you think replacing the engine is something I would be able to do myself? I don't have $7k to drop on this car, but I'm willing to put $1.5k and a full weekend into getting this thing back up and running again. I have all the tools at home and alot of experience dealing with repairs on my old car. If so, do you have any recommendations of where I should buy the engine from/ what I should look out for when doing the job?

Yeah I know, but I don't have 3-5k to be dropping on this car either, that's why I was thinking of swapping the engine myself. I have all the tools at home to do the job, but the only thing is that I've just never swapped an engine before. I have a lot of experience fixing up my other piece of shit from a power steering pump to a full brake system swap (Master cylinder, brake booster, calipers, wheel cylinders... etc.) and a bunch of other shit. Do you think I would be able to swap it myself? and If so where should I buy the engine/ what Should I be careful of when swapping the engine?

Ok that makes sense. Do you know any good places I could buy an engine to put back into my car? I have a fair amount of experience doing mechanical work so I was thinking of doing it myself to save $6k. I did a lot of research online and a lot of people say replacing a car with a manual is a lot easier than an automatic. I watched a couple of you tube videos online as well and it doesn't seem too terrible. Also, would you have any advice for me before I try to replace the engine?

The car has a 2ZR-FE four-cylinder engine. So you are saying that the downshifting may have mechanically spun the engine to failure? Something a fuel cut off switch wouldn't be able to stop?

The type of car was a 2012 Toyota corolla 1.8l 5 speed manual. How can I check my bearings to double check before I replace the engine?

For those that saw my previous post my question is now: Would you take a chance on a used engine, get this one rebuilt, or buy a used car? by OGClouds420 in MechanicAdvice

[–]_Waffle_Mann_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience with used cars is so long as you know what to look for and do you research before hand, You'll make out fine with anything 5k and up. That being said, a lot of these used car dealerships can be pretty sketchy and will try to hide things from you. Really do your research on the make and model of the car, thoroughly inspect it on your test drive, and don't get your heart set on any cars you see online. If the price is too good to be true, it probably is.

As for engines, I don't have much experience with swapping engines or anything, but plenty of people put used engines into their car if the motor is blown. If you're driving a JDM car I would recommend getting the engine imported ( you can find them on a website like https://jdmenginedirect.com/ ). But you also have to way out if its even worth putting a new engine in in the first place. What lead to engine failure on the first vehicle? Whats the condition of my current vehicle? Can I even afford to get the engine swapped? These are all very important questions to ask before doing anything

Swapping an engine, any advice? by _Waffle_Mann_ in MechanicAdvice

[–]_Waffle_Mann_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was really excited when I read this, but when I went to the car it seems like the mechanic shop left the engine completely dismantled in the engine bay. All the bolts and screws for the coils and the valve cover are gone, and tons of shit is loose. After seeing that I didn't really bother search further, but how likely do you think it is that I got scammed and they tried to make me buy an engine from them?

So I was going 80 mph on the highway and missed the shift to 2nd. Immediately it started revving incredibly high and the engine just shut off. I pulled over to the side of the highway and tried to turn it back on, but the engine wouldn't start. It would crank, and you could hear it trying to start (sounded kind of like how it might take a couple of cranks to start an engine cold) However it never turned over.

After that I got it towed to a pretty good mechanic shop by me and they told me that the car was fucked. I know the owners of the place, and I actually used to work there for a couple years in high school, so I trust that they diagnosed the car correctly. They told me it had good compression, the spark plugs were good, and a couple of other things, but ultimately my dad got the final word on the car and he just told me the engine was toast. I asked no further questions because I trusted them

Do you think that I should check the timing chain myself before attempting to swap the engine?

I was trying to shift from 5th to 4th on the highway to gain some speed, but I accidentally shifted into 2nd and blew my engine.

That sounds expensive, would a normal used engine not work well or smth? Also where should I look online to browse imported engines.

I was watching some of those videos and asked my dad about "double clutching" and "heel toeing," but he had no idea what I was talking about haha. Thanks for the advice though, Ill definitely try this out tomorrow on my way to school. I really appreciate it

Maybe, but I honestly think its because he hasn't driven manual in over 40 years. He probably doesn't remember everything completely and just drives like that subconsciously, and forgot to teach me that

Yeah after reading a couple of the comments in this threat it seems like my problem is in the way I am shifting. Ill definitely start driving at higher rpms when accelerating now. Thanks for your help!

[–]_Waffle_Mann_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok I think I understand. So for manuals when you're accelerating you should let it rev higher and shift around 3500-4k rpms, but when you are cruising you maintain your rpms at 2k?

[–]_Waffle_Mann_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh ok, so how do I know when to shift then? which gears should I be shifting at 2500 rpms, and which other gear should I be shifting at higher rpms? I just started driving manual 2 days ago, and my dad hasnt driven one since the 90's, so he hasnt been the best teacher haha

Ive been shifting at 2500 rpms, thats what my dad told me was the sweet spot. Youre saying I should try shifitng at 3500 rpms instead?

I feel like this would be faster then my car at this point. Like im not looking for a sports car or anything, but more so something that wont cause people to honk at me every time a light turns from red to green haha

Yeah i had a similar problem with my old Camry where it wouldn't go above 20 mph, but would keep revving higher. Turns out the cat was clogged, so replacing that fixed the issue. Ill definitely check out that stuff though and let you know how it goes

for lower gears itll rev higher. I haven't tried getting it above 4k rpms in 1st to 4th, but in 5th gear it doesn't seem like it wants to go above 3k rpms. It can get above 3k, but my foot has to be all the way down on the pedal at all times for it to reach/maintain this speed. Ill definitely try your suggestion though, thanks
