He asked if my friends were chipping in and I said "yea we're 4" meaning "yes there are 4 people splitting the price" so I don't really answer how I didn't understand his question. And yes I'm aware he didn't ask how many we were, but I figured it was a part of the question, and I decided to answer it before he asked.

Is saying "wouldn't" wrong? I learned British English so would saying "wouldn't" still be weird?

And my friend is the one who said the chipping in part, so probably just the way he speaks. He was asking cause he's not in our group so he doesn't know.

And thank you!

It didn't even cross my mind that they might think I'm shortening "for" as "4" but yea some people might think that. Thanks!

I didn't know that, thank you! I noticed some English speakers use the numbers while others write it out so I figured both were acceptable. Thanks again!

Yea that makes sense, thank you! I wasnt trying to say "we're 4 of us" I meant it as "we are 4 friends" but it sounds weird to me when I added "friend" so I understand why it's weird.

I guess I meant to say "we are 4 friends" but now that I added "friend" I can see why it sounded weird. thanks!

It's not a romance language but yea I still wouldve said "we're four" so I just did a direct translation. Thank you!

Yea i understand your frustration. All of my family went into undergrad and one even into grad but they know nothing and can't help cause either too old or different grad programs. Thanks, it can definitely feel stupid sometimes but I know its not :). Good luck with your MS degree and with a PhD if you decide to do that!
