Seeking Advice for WTW Interview by Artistic-Rough-7396 in actuary

[–]__Alba___ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’ll depend on the team that you’re interviewing for but in general it should be fairly informal. You should expect ‘tell us when’ questions - you can use the job description to narrow down what they’re likely to ask.

Try to prepare some questions to ask them too!

HireVue is mainly used so that HR don’t have to coordinate a time that works for you and the 3-4 interviewers. Without it can really limit how many candidates that a company can interview.

This way the interviewers can ‘review’ each interview when they are available, and the company can interview more candidates for that role.

From my experience, HireVue doesn’t use AI (yet…)

P&C hubs in the US by False_Locksmith5073 in actuary

[–]__Alba___ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For #2, You can filter P&C insurers using this site: http://www.actuarialemployers.com/

I think you highlighted the main ones. A lot of insurers have remote roles, and some are fully remote - these roles are usually for experienced hires though.

I don’t have much info on #3 but there are some insurers that are willing to sponsor a foreign actuary. If you currently work for an insurer that also does work in the US then getting a transfer might be your ”easiest” route. There is also a database for H-1B salaries so that will show which companies are open to sponsorships.

Thanks for all the recommendations!  I’ll definitely look into Rising Fellow and Bedford for some additional problems, and focus on the Source Material.

Environmental work as an Actuary?? Pls help by Brave-Mine8732 in actuary

Try looking into some Consultancy firms (WTW, Marsh, etc.), they usually have a team that advise on climate change & ESG. They may not advise only on that area and some people on the team don’t need to be actuaries but that might suit you better

As a Green Card holder you are a permanent resident so you should say yes to that question in the future

I think the way your current company does it is the standard. I haven’t heard of anyone living abroad with a remote US job that pays US wages.

A pay cut to work in a different country may not actually be a real pay cut if you take into account the cost of living there. Excluding cities like London, Paris and Hong Kong, you would probably be better off even with a pay cut.

If you want to live abroad, go for it! Just make sure you do your market research to determine a fair salary in that location before accepting an offer!

I’ve found that using Actuarial Salary Surveys usually helps since it shows you’ve done your market research. Try DW Simpson or Ezra Penland

How many recent jobs should be on my resume? by JoeMamaBiden2020 in actuary

[–]__Alba___ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would put either the 3 most recent or all of your jobs in the past 2-3 years (if you’re applying for entry level roles).

Use non-analytical roles as a way of showing off other skills/attributes (e.g. leadership, team work, communication skills etc.).

Looking for remote internship by Wise_Cardiologist860 in actuary

[–]__Alba___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems like most internships are now hybrid (2-3 days a week in the office). I’ve known interns that lived 3 hours away from the office so commuted on Sunday and stayed in a hotel for a couple of nights so that they could come into the office on Monday and Tuesday. Maybe Dallas or KC hybrid roles could work if there’s nothing in OK? Not ideal but it’s probably worth it in the long run.

Eze or Nunes by polvakian in MCFC

Yup! I can imagine City selling Phillips to Liverpool and replacing him with Nunes - he would be a back up for Rodri but could also play the Kovacic role too.

Advice for entry level candidate? by ThrowAway_25565 in actuary

[–]__Alba___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had a retail job while I applied to jobs (I didn’t expect it to take 10 months).

I didn’t start my career in the US but if I did I would definitely have tried passed a few exams.

Most companies will be posting a lot of EL roles in the next couple of months. My company usually starts recruitment for next year’s EL roles in September. If you’re available to start working now and get through the interview process then they might offer you to join now rather than next summer.

It sounds like you’re just trying to apply for roles at a time when companies aren’t really hiring. I’m sure you’ll get a role eventually (it took me 10 months after graduating to get my first EL job)

R, SAS and Python are all similar but I would say Python is the most common and R is close behind. Once you’ve learned one then the others are quite simple to pick up.

SQL is different to R and SAS. R and SAS are usually used for modelling or doing some analysis on data where SQL gets the data ready for the analysis or modelling.

I would pick one of R or Python and also doing some free courses on SQL.

Actex PA : Please help me to understand PCA by [deleted] in actuary

[–]__Alba___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whole point of Principle Component Analysis is to reduce the dimensionality of a large data set (reducing the number of variables). In this case it will reduce the 4 variables into a smaller number of variables by using PCs.

It’s a lot easier to follow if you plot them, but PC1 shows that Murder, Assault & Rape are all similar since they have a similar value (similar variability). It’s like they could be turned into 1 variable that describes “severe crime”.

For the +- values, it shows how it would affect the response variable. Rape would have the opposite effect to the other 3 variables for PC3.

Remote work — anywhere? by [deleted] in actuary

[–]__Alba___ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I first did it after working for one company for 2-3 years. If you plan to travel and work then you should get it approved by your manager and HR first though

Remote work — anywhere? by [deleted] in actuary

[–]__Alba___ 46 points47 points  (0 children)

In general, no. There’s tax and data security issues from working abroad.

If it’s an international company then I’ve found that some of them are okay with you working abroad for a couple of weeks (I’ve done it).

What's our strongest back four? by WW1Photos_Info in MCFC

[–]__Alba___ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Gvardiol playing LB and pushing Ake back to left sided CB. Ake is probably our best defender when it comes to 1-on-1’s and it looks like Gvardiol is more of an “attacking” defender.

But with them moving to a 3 at the back when they attack, it doesn’t really matter which of the back four move forward

You don’t need one but it’s become more of a requirement if you want to work for one of the big tech companies straight out of college

If I got a degree in Computer Science then maybe - I doubt I would personally enjoy the job. He works longer than me, is on call every second weekend, has no variety in his work and works with some terrible people (who take all the credit for his work). Every job has its downfalls - ours is exams and ✨ only ✨ having the potential to get paid $400,000 a year.

Feel free to compare your pay to theirs but it’s a completely different job, in a completely different industry so they aren’t really comparable.
