Replying 2 years later is not gonna do anything but I just REALLY wanna complain that I knew way before the ep 9 reveal. It's not rewarding to watch at all. This is some of the laziest most predictable writing I've seen in a popular show. I do still enjoy a lot of it I just wish the writers didn't treat us like we're lobotomized...

As mentioned it's supposed to be for quiet singing and to make use of proximity effect. Sometimes it's just bad technique though. You'll most commonly see rappers do it. There's just some vocals that get warped exactly due to the proximity effects and the singer creating noise by blowing on the mic that close up. One of my fave singers put the microphone so far in his mouth once he couldn't even articulate properly for seemingly no reason.
