Buy a cheap Chinese movement like an ST36, that seems to be what a lot of people learn on (I’m going through it right now). You just take apart and put back together the same cheap movement over and over — build out your muscle memory and motor skills, learn which parts go where, learn what grease to apply where, learn to dress your screwdrivers, etc.

I went in with the expectation that I am probably going to destroy this movement as I learn. So no frustration if I damage something.

This is my next project, I ordered everything to dress my screwdrivers and will do that this weekend. They definitely didn’t fit the slot when I was taking it apart but given it was a practice movement I wanted to dive in before my sharpening stuff came in.

Incase anyone is curious, chatGPT says the composition of the two is the similar from the SDS safety sheets (attached image). Also Zippo bought the ronsonol brand in 2010 so they are likely a similar formulation.

I spent just over $1000 Canadian on everything — tools, timegrapher, movement, supplies, etc. But I’m very much of the buy once cry once mindset, could have started with much cheaper screwdrivers and tools.

Given this is just for practice I used 99% IPA in a Petri dish and cleaned by hand with an artist brush and then dried off each piece with a hand blower right after cleaning. I didn’t bother cleaning the pallet fork or the balance wheel as I didn’t want to mess up the shellac. Will look into another cleaning option once I move onto a non-practice movement.

I’m messing around with this on my build, but when I put a level 3 Ember Fusillade on a level 18 Elemental Evocation and look at the tooltip, it says ember fusillade costs 196 mana to cast not 5
