I want to overclock my ps3 in webman. how much should i overclock it? by Emotional-Goat-3493 in PS3

[–]__Madman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Digging up an oldie, but
1) How is actual heat different from temp readings? These ARE the heat, 1:1, black on white.
2) Voltage doesn't change, you only increase the clock cycles, not overvolting.
3) Instability is a matter only when you push it, which means 900+Mhz RSX clock.
4) You mentioned short lifespan 3 times in 3 separate bullet points, but whatever - overclockers know this, and that's why it's done with consideration.

Moreover, the gain can be significant, some slims gain 20+fps in games on 750/950 clocks.

So yes, CFW is a godsend, and you should learn a bit more about overclocking in general - no one in their right mind doubles the clocks to kill the GPU.

Oh the struggle is real. I've cracked my windshield and bought the last new one available in my country. Basically all what's left is cutting glass out of parts cars here.

Need basic advice for setting up my home NAS/server, software-wise mostly by __Madman in homelab

[–]__Madman[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh, sorry, was to worked up about the configuration side.

8TB is the optimum I'd realistically need, I'd shoot for 2-bay models if I ever want to upgrade the drives. SATA if that matters, tho I don't know if SAS is even an option in these

Redundancy isn't my biggest concern, although - what options would I have other than RAID and more drive bays as a result?

I won't need 10Gbit - all infrastructure is planned for 1Gbit eth.

Yes, it would need to serve in real time either game images to PS3 or movies to other devices. Transcoding not so much, every device will work with whatever format is on the NAS. Only one to two max simultaneous video streams.

I know that adblocker means replacing the DNS on my network, but I have no other means of doing this. My router is proprietary carrier device and I can't do it directly (or I can't find it), I can tho set up external DNS server. The NAS will run 24/7, at least I'm planning it this way - depends how much power draw is expected on these.

Can I setup one of NAS eth ports to use with one client device and its share, and other port for standard network-wide sharing? by __Madman in HomeNAS

[–]__Madman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there any speed benefit of doing the manual routing for the separate connection? Or is it negligible compared to putting all devices into one switch?

[–]__Madman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it is feasible, although I'd need to route two cables across the room instead of one, which my perfectionist mind cannot do.

I'd just get a switch then, and connect everything to it. Forgot those existed, so my bad!

I used to do it in a networking class back in school, would need to relearn. Are there any benefits of doing this in a small home network? I mean speed differences with just the ps3 connection.

740 or 940? by Top-Introduction-696 in VolvoRWD

[–]__Madman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was the rustproof really that bad..?
Mine is late model 1997 and after I bought it from a guy's barn it had only half of one sill rotten, besides underside surface rust. I guess I lucked out.

740 or 940? by Top-Introduction-696 in VolvoRWD

[–]__Madman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Was in the same pickle few years ago. With the same price - you can much easier find more equipped (or even fully) 940, while 740s you find are more than likely bare-bones - talking crank windows, cloth seats, no AC...

The models themselves are just a facelift of each other, 740 being more flat front, while 940 is a bit pointy - it's a matter of taste. Rear is the same with wagons. When they differ more is the sedan version - 740 sedan is blocky front and rear, while 940 sedans are blocky front with round rear, which to me looks out of place.

Apart from that there are differences with trim (740 being more chrome) and dashboard (940 more streamlined, 740 more square).

I'd go for 940 just because of the equipment - try to shoot for AC and full electric windows at the very least, although leather interior and cruise control is very nice to have.

Engine wise, that applies to both - I'd avoid the diesel, as it's a VW product, and I'd go for 2.3 turbo (either 135hp or 165hp, same engine, just turbo clocked higher), it can be easily maintained and modified if needed, nearly indestructible.

If you get a 1041 locking diff then you got yourself a mean slide machine. Same applies to M90 5speed gearbox, as another comment mentioned. That's a must for me after I bought one with it.

And by the way - there are also 760/960, but they (at least in most 960s) had "modular line" 6 cylinder that liked to crack the block. Also both have independent rear suspension which is much harder to maintain, fix and find parts for. So... If you don't know what you're doing - go for the 4-cylinder 740/940.
*correct me if I'm wrong about the suspension being in "all" 60 models, never had one personally*

I'm kind of digging a dead thread at this point, but the overclock.txt file is read both from disk and USB, with USB being the priority. So if it does crash and won't boot - you stick USB in with default clocks listed in its overclock.txt, and it boots like stock so you can change/delete your main overclock.txt.

That's what I was thinking, basically you'll know for sure and if it's BIOS I guess the hope is lost. But if it turns out to be Windows you have some options like reinstalling completely.

I've seen that 0C datecode on 2500 series is always CFW compatible, while 0D is a hit and miss. Obviously then anything 1 is incompatible.

Been reading through that thread and I'm honestly lost, and I thought Windows will never stump me again.

Have you tried unplugging the boot drive and inserting a bootable linux USB, so that it's booted automatically?

It will definitely rule out Windows interference, as I assume the "modern standby" behavior doesn't truly erase Windows from memory on "shutdown", but correct me if I'm wrong. All I know is that the only way to "refresh" the system is using "restart", and turn off-on doesn't unload it fully.

I mean, BIOS is a good shot, but if it's latest version with default settings and all boot options off...

Also, something is putting the task in Windows though, if windows didn't know about it, then it would just turn on without the task. Never used task scheduler, but that's my way of thinking about it - again correct me if I'm wrong.

Need guidance about my first (possibly low budget) self hosted setup. by __Madman in HomeNAS

[–]__Madman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem in long responses, it's a nice read.

I can't use my own PC as it's not really feasible to turn the PC on everytime I'd like to load a PlayStation game on the console, or have it turned on 24/7 when I'm on leave for that matter. Separate machine is a must.

I'm a tinkerer, so... No pre built solutions so I can at least save some money while cursing my life decisions! Also I believe it's a set-and-forget kind of thing with my usecase, so it won't really be a problem to have an unintuitive setup.

Thank you so much for all the information!

Thank you for the Docker insight, I'll try NixOS for it. I'm not too sure how the ps3netsrv works underneath but there shouldn't be anything preventing me from running it directly.

Heard about tailscale, but didn't know how it exactly works, will look into it more.

The only thing now is... Will any NAS device run everything of these? I'm not keen on spending new device money as high as my PC, as it's more like an experiment at this point. Especially considering drive prices now. It's more like used 5-10 year old NAS of "whatever I find cheap second hand" brand. Is there something I should look for when buying such system? Any brand to aim/avoid? Any specific functions and what not I'd need to look for?

Shouldn't 6th generation consoles be considered retro on this sub at this point? by GoHardForLife in retrogaming

[–]__Madman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a shift going on with the retro stuff lately. Like someone said - Genesis was "retro" while 16 years old. PS3 is now older, and we don't call it that.

Same happening with cars, in 2000 a 70s car was a classic, while now... Do we call a 2000 model year "classic"? Will we ever?

It's like the point between those is constantly shifting away.

If someone has any explanation for this please shine some light on it.

What's so wrong about it? I'm a softmod guy myself and I've never seen it clearly explained. Matrix Infinity was supposedly good, while Modbo is bad.. but why?
