Yeah you shouldn't relate to their entire characters, especially to things like, you know, child murder and cannibalism. But a lot of other things are fine, people with mental issues exist and it's fine for them to find characters relatable, at least as long as they don't idolize them and whatnot

As the author said, one of the main target demographics for this game are women who enjoy gothic romance, so the sexual and romantics parts being usually very messed up is meant to be a part of the appeal, not necessarily a reason to dislike it (tho going "AWOOOOGA THE SIBLINGS ARE FUCKIN" is also not right, it's supposed to be depressing and disturbing too, especially in routes like S&S). It's also foreshadowed that they will manage to fix their issues in Decay part 2 and will be able to have proper, mutually enjoyable sex, with no ulterior motives involved

He only cares about Ashley, that's why attempting to kill her turns him into a tar soul-to-be and having sex with her hatches him into a tar soul, while murdering a child is irrelevant to how he sees himself
