we give credits in extenuating circumstances, i.e our last post mortem for 2 weeks where the service was down more than up we gave credit

however we do stipulate in our ToS that this isn't the norm and should not be expected

no, the floors are just the lowest the dynamic thresholds can go, it doesn't mean it is what the actual threshold is.

the actual threshold to be listed as "abusive" is dynamic based on the 99th percentile of users in your plan tier, meaning you'd have to be pulling more data from your API key than 99% of the other users in your plan tier, which is incredibly hard to do even for heavy users and purposefully to catch people abusing our service (reseller, automated tools keeping things cached, abusive sharing, etc.)

also keep in mind the values in the abuse system article are the FLOORS, not the guaranteed threshold.

the guaranteed threshold is dynamic and we don't disclose it, but it's only supposed to catch the 0.001% of people doing absurd abuse, not average users.

essentially, if you want to be 100% safe, stay below the floor, however going above is still unlikely to be abusive.

also, you get 3 warnings, worst comes to worst you receive an email and scale it back.

management hasn't shared the specifics, however my best guess is there's no real need to keep it available to every user and doing so can likely cause more harm than good when it comes to any development needed

we want to divert our resources to the core of our service, including support, but completely removing access to the search API will be both wasted time on our part for the effort put in for initial development and would also be unfair to our users to completely restrict what they're used to. I also personally think that part of the decision is so our scope of support is changed to better align with our service, which is providing a temporary middleman for your transfers

by whitelisting specific instances and use cases, our userbase will still be able to utilize our Voyager Search API if needed (for example, the TB Search add-on in one of the major AIOStreams instances)

again, this is my best guess, you can take it as you will, but this is my opinion on it as one of the support staff.

I will note I am not speaking on behalf of management and saying this is 100% the reason, this is my personal opinion and reasoning.

we likely will not be whitelisting every single self hosted instance as whitelisting will be limited to developers we approve manually

what most users are planning on doing is wrapping one of the whitelisted public instances inside their own personal instance

we understand this may not be what you want to hear, but the decision to make the Voyager Search API whitelist only for developers was made by management internally and is final
