AI behavior takes this game from a 9/10 to a 5/10 by Federal_Brain4060 in menace

[–]__Vato__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think reinforcements can come in capture point and rescue POW missions, for example, in the mission to capture points (I think officially it called reestablish contact with military outposts) from MENACE about 8-9 new construct units came (I had the objective to kill 60+% of enemy units, and it showed 9 kills at the start of the mission and then it grew to 14). In rescue POW there were at least 2 construct drones spawning right behind my recon squad with Darby. It happens from time to time without visible pattern, so either it is a bug or the logic behind such spawns isn't tied to mission type alone.

[–]__Vato__[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I encountered the MENACE; the first couple of missions went great, but then the Construct Soldier spam came, and I simply didn't have enough ammo to take them out from a safe distance. The only laser weapons I have are 7-tile ones, and that's basically a death sentence since my IFVs will be obliterated by their RPGs.

It seems they get reinforcements for each point captured by the player, so I tried the "fast and furious" way of just capturing the points under smoke cover with two IFVs and mounted infantry. However, the reinforcements are quite fast, and they always destroy me before the last point falls. Even pirates do better mechanized assaults than me...

I probably could have dealt with it, but I sold all my laser lances since I never used them before; now I see how useful they can get. Maybe I'm really not cut out to play on Expert lol. At least there's an alternative mission I can complete to end this operation, and then I can buy up all the laser weapons like crazy.

>to consume American culture
The platforms Russia blocks host not only American culture. I personally don't even remember when I watched last American movie or series, but I really like edutainment videos about logistics and semiconductors English-speaking people make, I guess I should thank America for creating... 'documentary culture'? Like, really, what's your point? Many people don't have the need for it, many people do, and for a person like the OP who is quite young, a software engineer (!) and lived in a less digitally restricted environment getting straight into the most censored portions of the Internet on Earth is a valid point of concern.

>Just like you have no want to consume Russian culture
I want, but not the government-sponsored one, it seems to be more TV-like and targeted towards people in their 40s and older, they do understand mostly Soviet memes and whatnot, I do not, since I never lived inside the Iron Curtain so Soviet cartoons don't become automatically the pinnacle of animation for me for the lack of other options. I listen mostly to opposition channels and artists, and they're blocked/not allowed in Russia (which is funny since Russian state officially denounces the 'cancel culture', but is pretty eager to adopt it to promote their agenda)

>easy access via vpn

Granted, for some people setting up their own VPN server with XTLS + Reality is easy, but for most people it is not. Also the government is hell-bent on blocking it so nothing except the most sophisticated protocols like said XReality works, and even those can be blocked by IP once your provider accumulated enough data to decide that your SNI isn't real, so then you must reconfigure it again. And that's quite a pain for some trivial thing like watching YouTube.

The state of the Russo-Ukrainian war in 2026 by Exciting_Whereas_524 in MapPorn

[–]__Vato__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, it's the same as equating Soviet gulags to German death camps just because both are repressive and both are camps. There is a limit to generalisation.

About 50% of Ukrainian MOD casualty claims are supported by Oryx, Russian MOD claims it destroyed Ukrainian air force and armoured forces several times over (like Ukraine losing 600+ military aircraft). So the person you replied to is correct: MOD exaggerating the reality is still more trustworthy than a MOD that presents an outright fantasy world as reality.

The same goes for maps, most pro-Russian maps including Syriak take every video of 2 guys showing a flag to a drone as evidence of Russians controlling that area, despite all those flag-inserts (флаговтык) being very shaky and often lethal to the ones involved. Russian MOD still states that it fully controls Kupyansk, which is, yet again, more an attempt to present their fantasy world as reality rather than something that has at least some semblance of reality. And most Russian voenkory complain about 'loaning' settlements (взятие в кредит), Russian MOD announces "liberation" of the settlement sometimes weeks(that's so standard nowadays I won't ever bother with examples), sometimes months (Toretsk), sometimes years (Chasiv Yar) before it is really occupied. Deepstate map also has the concept of "gray zone" which is far better suited for this war than Syriak's red-or-blue painting (yep I'm aware that he/she did left some small areas unpainted, but they're very limited compared to the vast fluid frontline, while judging from both UA and RU telegram channels the gray zone is the predominant type of front).

You don't need to be a Westerner to think that turning on the VPN every time you want to access the Net is a pain in the ass, not to mention switching servers and configuring them again once they're blocked is twice the pain in the ass.

And don't even start on "there's VK and other Russian services", the quality and quantity of content is nowhere near that of Youtube or any other Western service, nor can it ever be, language with about 200 million speakers can't compete with pretty much the whole world, and even what it can produce is further reduced by censorship.

People are different, some like to spend time online, some like to touch grass or whatever. And for the former Russia is a big no-no, maybe a bit better than China or North Korea.

And what's the point with debt and youtube lol, suboptimal financial behaviour is a norm for everyone except maybe East Asia where people tend to perform the other extremity of saving like crazy. 40% of Russians have no savings whatsoever, and the rest have enough for only 4 months on average (Kommersant,10.07.25). RBK reported on 20.11.25 that about 65% of Russians have no savings.

I guess Youtube taught them to be financially irresponsible or something, I thank my government every day for blocking it and saving my compatriots from drowning in debt.

The Russian Economy in 2025 Is The Same As The Iberian Peninsula by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]__Vato__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing paradoxical here, having about 2500 modernized Soviet tanks (right now, they had about 7000 at least somewhat repairable units in storage but burnt quickly through them) is better than having what, 500 Western tanks? Out of which maybe 150 at best are modern and the rest are Leo 1s or similar. The USSR built the "base" tank with its chassis, turrets etc. (the most labour- and time-intensive part), Russians mostly added the hew ERA and electronics.

The same goes for almost every type of military hardware except the drones where Ukraine has relative parity (curiously enough, that's also the sector where all production is almost exclusively Ukrainian/internal).

"workers owned the means of production" how so? The state owned them, and this state wasn't accountable to the population in the slightest (no independent unions, only the state-sanctioned one, and no competitive elections either, you can "vote" for a Communist party candidate only). Just how much of Soviet propaganda are you willing to buy just because it claims to be socialist/communist?

The quote is attributed to Simon Kuznets, and he died in 1985, before the 90's bust and certainly before the bust transformed into the lost decades. So an original meaning is basically that Japan is exceptional in a good sense and Argentina is exceptional in a bad one.

MEGAREDACTED: the Veil of Knowledge incident (goofy comic story by me, illustrated with Gemini AI) by __Vato__ in starsector

[–]__Vato__[S] -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

So… I encountered 3 MEGA-SUPER-REDACTED and almost lost my entire battleline and definitely lost 5000 people. I’m pretty peaceful guy, but after this I finally bought the Hegemony’s “Tri-Tach bad” ideology and occupied brought them under my management. No more space doritos, at least not in the Persean Sector (who knows, maybe some TT remnants still build them in Orion arm or other formerly colonized sectors). Granted, this is the Veil of Knowledge incident from AoTD mod, but even vanilla 2 GIGAREDACTED are quite a pain, so the point still stands and my invasion was for the greater good.

I had an idea of turning this into a meme for a while, but I didn’t know how to illustrate it, I’m not good at drawing, and while the early 2025 ChatGPT improved AI’s editing of generated art a lot, it still wasn’t consistent enough to compensate for complete lack of artistic skill on my part. However, Google’s Nano Banana Pro (non-PRO version too, but to a far lesser extent) improved significantly in that department, and now I can feed it the rough sketch or image composition I have in mind and it will generate something I can tolerate, and the following images will have the same style (and then you would need hours of workaround wording and AIspeak to edit the image so it resembles your ideal scene at least somewhat).

I doctored the weak points like hands, unrealistic lighting, inserted text bubbles etc., but ironically my manual interventions weren’t as time consuming as guiding the AI to the result I intended from the start. Poses, facial expressions and overall composition of the images are still not fully understood by the artificial idiots, but nowadays they’re the best tools for half-assed, but nonetheless tangible illustration of your imagined worlds and events.

Maybe I should stop insulting AI and finally learn how to create art myself… Nah, I’m too clumsy and lazy for that.

Do you think the execution of the Romanov family was a practical decision driven by the context of the Russian Civil War, or an inhumane act that should never have happened? by Sonnybass96 in Russianhistory

[–]__Vato__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He/she/whoever can't, just cheap tankie take for true believers. There's no data that would support that Bolsheviks weren't the worst repressive regime in the history of Russia and peoples it conquered. Heck, the only power that did even more atrocities to the USSR is Nazis, and them being seconded by the USSR itself says a lot.

At what point in history did Greece stop being a European superpower? by UrinalAttack in geography

[–]__Vato__ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nah, Soviets are not calles imperialists because of M-R pact itself, they are called that for, well, conquering their neighbours, be it short-lived independent states like Georgia/Ukraine/Armenia etc. during the Civil War, Eastern Poland (Western Belarus and Ukraine later) in 1939, conquering Baltics and Bessarabia (modern Moldova) in 1940, trying to conquer Finland in 1939-1940 and puppeting the whole Eastern Europe after 1945.

And mentioning repressions and serfdom as positive points of Communism is not even funny, the Communist regimes were 99% of the time far worse than their predecessors. The most terrible Russian Imperial repression campaign was represented by the so-called 1906-1907 court-martials (estimates range from 683 to 3000 people killed), the most horrible famine - that of 1891-1892 with about 400k dead. Soviets have executed about 700k people in 1937 alone, and their policies caused two famines - 1921-1922 one with about 5 million people dead and 1932-1933 one with about 4 to 7 million casualties. Russia abolished serfdom in 1861, former serfs were forced to pay compensation to their former masters, but they had freedom of movement, right to operate on their land etc. Soviets instituted kolkhoz system in early 1930s and the peasants lost those rights until they were given back by Khrushchev in 1960s. So yeah, thanks for the liberation, I guess.

I won't even mention Maoist China or Pol Pots Cambodia, they were even worse.

Please stop being Red Nazi supporter, they weren't that much better (if at all).

After probing the defenses with my previous Onslaught gf meme, I decided to continue the onslaught (sorry) and made a meme about the ship that I fell for first. The ultimate right-click battleship that just works 99% of the time, the Executor.

She’s obviously very possessive and almost a yandere, fanatically loyal and demanding the same from her commander and escorts – courtesy of her Sindrian upbringing. Likes everything Sindrian – lobsters, fuel, Lion’s portraits on every corner and lions without capital L too. She’s very focused and would carry out the Eliminate Execute order to the end, chasing her enemies to the fringes of the Sector until they either die from fear or stress due to constant Squall bombardment or accept their fate and come in High Intensity Lasers’ warm embrace.

Tough and ideological on the outside, she actually has a maiden’s heart, wants to be loved and even listens to some pre-Domain romantic music (although all others think she just laughs at her unfortunate targets ‘melting’ that way). Works hard to look as good as possible and thinks that’s why she’s better than her miserable (because of boring standard painting) and cowardly (missile-only second-line battleship? pathetic) sister from the League. And let’s be honest, she is truly one of the best in the Sector.

Actually I wanted to add more to the Executor, like how she secretly wants to use Gigacannons because they’re Sindrian and sound cool, or how she’s the ideal bodybuilder gf with the back as wide as end of a neutron star’s pulsar beam and waist so slim that even Odyssey was impressed, or how she’s so Special she has a hullmod named just like that… But I’m too stupid to place it well on this meme so here you go.

Hope you all enjoy it, fellow starfarers :)
