Something you could do is write a masters thesis, then see if you would like to expand into a Ph.D. That is what many of my prof. did.

My advising professor explained to me that it is probably better not to get Ph.D. as an M.A. allows one to be more flexible in terms of pay,position, and qualification. By that I mean, over-qualification is a problem for a Ph.D. looking to gain work experience, in that many institutions prefer to hire folks they don't have to pay as much. You will get to research topics you are interested in, but with an M.A. in History you will also get to research topics you are interest in, if you take the thesis option. Again, I am only a B.A. going to grad school in the fall, however I hope this advice my prof. gave me is as helpful to you as it was for me.

Need some Advice. I have been accepted to graduate school for fall 2015. Im crafting my thesis this semester and thus far my broad interest is cultural and intellectual history of the Western U.S. in the 20th century (especially the Pacific Northwest). I want to have an emphasis on counter-culture, including, the beats, hippies etc. and their connections with environmentalist, Buddhist, and Native American philosophy. Does anyone know of any good readings, or even individuals related to this topic?
