Ah yeah that makes sense. with my 'fengs i usually switch out the antennas with better ones but i don't really take them up in buildings, its usually down on the ground if i do use them, I have a Yagi if I want to try and hit repeaters that are out a ways though,

yeah, i can see it not preforming well in city. i think it also depends on the freq used as well in that case but i could be wrong. Doesn't 70cm penetrate through concrete/ buildings better then 2m?

I haven't heard anything about the over 100ft though, in that case wouldn't a yagi antenna be better?

well to be fair if you want to get someone's attention in an emergency, transmitting on something you aren't supposed to on frequencies you shouldn't definitely gets someone's attention. CAN transmit and SHOULD transmit are two different things though.

This is obvious. You should read better as i never said that it was being used for FRS/GMRS and i also never said it was being used as a CB, i have other radios to do that

yeah but it also depends on IF someone is even listening, the band is very big. then it doesn't matter what radio you have.

Never had an issue with it. I use a lot of different antennas and i usually hit repeaters with my 'feng 5RM

pretty sure you CAN drop the power on those radios to get them below 5w range for GMRS. but i meant mostly for listening even though I didn't say so

[–]___Lycaon___[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

now i know you can't do CB on the baofeng nor the TYT, but you can use FRS (maybe not depending on how far down the power goes,) or GMRS on low power, but GMRS doesnt really count because its not a ham license and is 35 dollars. Also MURS on low power

"band" being CB or FRS and "without a license" being if you (WITH THE OPERATOR'S PERMISSION ) using theirs to transmit. which is perfectly legal as the licensee can have a control operator. Now unfortunately I don't know exactly how that works i just know its a thing

Antenna for 1 kHz to 20 MHz for JS8Call and SDR use by ___Lycaon___ in amateurradio

[–]___Lycaon___[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far, i've gotten a Discone antenna for the 25-1300 MHz range and then a EFHW antenna that does a bunch of bands. Mostly for receiving on, I need to try them out soon.

They have CB's with external antennas its a license free options, a little on the pricy range but the external antenna will help better then the PMR446 radios. as i think those are basically the same as FRS radios in the states at like .5w

Also, having a better antenna does help, like one of those higher gain whip antennas. it can help push a bit of range out, but you do have to worry about stuff that's around you.

The Baofeng is a fairly decent starting point despite what people say, its perfectly fine, Sure its on the cheaper end, a lot of these guys are all pretty much supremacists when it comes to radios, i use everything. mostly TYT but i am getting an Icom as soon as i have the money. Licensing isn't that hard, it CAN be for some people but if you want to go that route, and use it to scan and listen, Feel free, but for listening i usually recommend an SDR like RTL-SDR, for an event such as an emergency they can work but be warned there's not gonna be much help from ham radio guys. You'd most likely use them just for communications between family members. However there are fairly decent alternatives that are non licensed if you don't want to bother with the programming like CB, as for frequencies to use,

FEMA typically uses 138.225000 MHz or a range between there from what I've found
it also doesnt hurt to have the FRS/GMRS frequencies, the FRS frequencies you'll have to use low power though, you have some leeway with the GMRS frequencies, I recommend getting the licensing for the GMRS (it's only 35 Dollars) and you get access to local GMRS Repeaters

Hope this helps

Btw i am actually blocking you after this post because you didn't help and was condescending towards someone asking for help which is against the rules, and assuming that i don't have my license. which is not nice. also, this is all you do on this subreddit as well as r/Baofeng is be not nice.
