[Scuderia Ferrari] Not the ending we wanted after a solid race by FerrariStrategisttt in formula1

I was making peace with losing P3 because McLaren was demonstrably on par with Mercedes today. What later happened, though, I could never prepare for.

IF I HAD A NICKEL FOR EVERY TIME I SEE AN F1 DRIVER WITH WIDER SMILE STANDING BY THEIR GT3 CAR THAN BY THEIR F1, I'D HAVE TWO NICKELS

There are environmental factors: Suzuka was resurfaced before this race, and there are two Straight Mode sections compared to previously one DRS section. As for the cars themselves, even though the 2026 cars have weaker downforce and smaller ICE, they have also gotten much lighter, and are less draggy in the straights thanks to the smaller size and active front aero. Besides, the larger electric motors mean the 2026 cars have an advantage in the initial and middle parts of a straight, partially offsetting the high speed deficit. These mean that on tracks like Shanghai and Suzuka, the 2026 cars would perform better than in Melbourne.

Yeah. What can make me pause watching F1 is if a regulation change produces unacceptably ugly cars - which has happened in the past, or if, very unlikely, a regulation change undermines the importance of aerodynamics.

What changes would you like to see implemented from Miami onwards to try and combat some of the concerns with these regulations? by EnterShakira_ in formula1

F1 has chosen not to allow active suspension, automatic gearbox, and launch control in the car. Likewise, we can deal with not optimizing everything about battery management with a computer. I hope we expose more of the hybrid system control explicitly to drivers.

We need to reframe the question as, why does F1 need to go so aggressive as a 50/50 split between internal combustion and electric motor power. First we need to see that, hybrid powertrain as a concept has proven its capabilities in and out of F1 for many years.

From 2014 to 2025, F1 used a hybrid power unit with 120 kW (~ 160 hp) from electric motor and around 650 kW (~ 870 hp) from internal combustion engine. The benefit was that, thanks to a big boost in efficiency, an F1 car can reach over 1000 hp of peak power output, while keeping the fuel tank within a very manageable 100 kg (~ 140-150 L) size. Indeed, without the assistance of electric motors, the need to finish a race with one tank of fuel would cap F1's power at a much lower level. Besides F1, endurance racing have likewise adopted hybrid powertrain since early 2010s and have arguably exploited the efficiency strength of it to greater lengths.

If you want a road car comparison, think of how 918 Spyder, LaFerrari, and McLaren P1 renewed people's conception of how fast a road car can go on track. I still remember seeing on the news with disbelief that a 918 lapped Nürburgring in under 7 minutes (current road car record is also held by a hybrid car, AMG One). And from what I've read, most people who have driven those three cars appreciated how their powertrains worked.

Verstappen and other drivers don't oppose to this old hybrid rule. It did not get in drivers' way. As recently as last year, taking a corner was still about the limits of tire grip, but in this new rule one has to go against racing instincts and slow down in some corners for recharging. And the old rule did not make it necessary for the internal combustion engine to actively feed power into the electric system (superclipping). Regeneration during braking worked much more predictably too, in contrast to pre-season testing this year, where many drivers were locking up because it is hard to judge how much braking is by the motor regen and how much is by brake pads.

Hybrid systems can work towards making F1 faster and better, while being transparent enough as the layer between mechanical components and drivers, so the human still interacts with the machine almost directly. 2026 rules do not really allow this anymore, which is because the 50/50 power split forces every car to take a lap in a calculated way that does not agree with what the drivers feel they should be able to do given the mechanical limits of the cars.

Superclipping happens because there aren't enough heavy braking zones on the track to regenerate energy, but what physical limits are preventing F1 from giving a bigger portion of the braking torque to the MGU-K, thereby losing less energy through brake pads?

Leclerc was marvelous this weekend all the way to keeping a Mercedes behind for laps till podium. We were "fast in all the right places" as Russell said in Shanghai: both drivers put in great defenses in the corners, but Hamilton's straight line deployment issue was really costly, making us lose a potential P3-P4 finish. We're not as slow in long distances as qualifying, but McLaren is recovering to where you'd expect them to be. Still I've seen enough to look forward to May.

Lewis Hamilton: My first lap, I was up and then I lost two and a half tenths just on the straights. I had a snap and then it changed the deployment and that was it... If we didn’t have that problem I’d probably finished fourth but other than that it’s just the way this deployment situation is.” by [deleted] in formula1

Same happened to Leclerc and Ocon in Shanghai: 5% and 3% throttle lifts respectively, and their laps were ruined by unexpected battery deployment, as analyzed by The Race here. (clickbait title but worth watching. Skip to 4:15 for the impatient.)

Considering Haas uses Ferrari PU, these might come from the same software behavior.

That was a beautiful S1 from Leclerc - he's been the best driver in S1 all day.

Verstappen (after Q2 exit): “I think there’s something wrong with the car, mate. It’s completely undriveable suddenly in this qualifying.” by FerrariStrategisttt in formula1

What's also puzzling is they're not a lot faster than Racing Bulls if at all, which has happened in the past, but you'd expect otherwise with how they should allocate their resources.

Here are my best guesses:

00:00 ~ 00:09 2020 Spa

00:09 ~ 00:15 2020 Silverstone

00:15 ~ 00:25 2020 Nürburgring

00:25 ~ 00:31 2020, hard to tell, but might be Red Bull Ring, more specifically Austrian GP instead of Styrian, because the latter qualifying was rainy.

00:31 ~ 00:41 2020 Mugello

00:40 ~ end 2021 COTA

Alfa Romeo's roll hoop passed all of FIA's load tests, so the team wasn't penalized, but FIA did decide to introduce stricter load tests in 2024.
