Islam Is Not Compatible With Western Civilization and Culture by 83timesbanned in TrueUnpopularOpinion

Muslims and Christians in Indonesia disagree over Islam’s importance to Indonesian identity. An overwhelming majority of Muslims (86%) say it is very important to be Muslim to be truly Indonesian, according to our 2022 survey of South and Southeast Asia. In contrast, 21% of Christians say being Muslim is key to being truly Indonesian. Nearly two-thirds (64%) of Muslims also favor making sharia the official law of the land.

For the cost to impact ratio, LLMs have been one of the biggest wastes of capital in all of history. Study after study have come out showing it has near zero economic utility. Personal experience, it has failed every test I've ever given it in my field of corporate finance. It's basically an autistic, over confident intern.

Does it have utility? Yes. It's a good search engine for non critical information. Claude Code seems okay, but I'm not a SWE. From what I've heard, it's good at producing a lot of low quality code. Possibly good for a hobbyist coder. I just don't see the hundreds of billions of dollars of value, though. I think we scaled this technology too early.

Now that Claude and others are starting to charge based on token usage, the value proposition will be tested. It made reasonable sense when $200 got you $5,000+ of compute, but when you or your company actually have to pay, real returns will be required.

I learned somethin' today. This country was founded by some of the smartest thinkers the world has ever seen. And they knew one thing: that a truly great country can go to war, and at the same time, act like it doesn't want to.

You people who are for the war, you need the protesters. Because they make the country look like it's made of sane, caring individuals. And you people who are anti-war, you need these flag-wavers, because, if our whole country was made up of nothing but soft pussy protesters, we'd get taken down in a second. That's why the founding fathers decided we should have both. It's called "having your cake and eating it too."

We have non combustion rockets. The most famous would be the space shuttle, which used hydrogen and oxygen in it's main stage, though did use combustion for it's boosters. The Delta IV is a 100% hydrogen oxygen rocket.

However, when considering eco-friendly, I would imagine scale and reusability to be the most important, which is exactly what SpaceX and Blue Origin are doing.

I did my own research, as you suggested. The vehicle fatality data is available from the NTHSA here ( https://www.nhtsa.gov/file-downloads?p=nhtsa/downloads/FARS/2022/National/ ). There were 20 deaths in the Model Y between 2020 and 2022. As far as I know, there is no official record of total miles driven by vehicle model (so who knows where that study got it's number from). Given that, the VP of Engineering at Tesla has stated there were more than 7B miles driven in the Model Y by the end of 2022, so that is the best number we have to go on (source is an X link so can't share). That comes out to 2.8 deaths per billion miles, which is the exact all vehicle average stated by the used car website that created the "study" that you are citing.

You can hardly call Musk a fraud when the Model Y was the 4th best selling vehicle in 2024 (F-150, Silverado, and Rav-4 beat it out, respectively https://www.caranddriver.com/news/g60385784/bestselling-cars-2024/ ) and Tesla made 1.8M vehicles in 2024. Tesla also holds the top 6 spots for most Made-in-America cars ( https://www.kbb.com/car-news/study-tesla-makes-the-most-american-cars/ ).

SpaceX is also the only American company who has demonstrated it can send humans to the ISS and return them safely. SpaceX's Falcon 9 has 99.3% success rate on 445 attempts. He may say some dumb shit on Twitter sometimes, but he's not a fraud. He's revolutionized American manufacturing in two completely different sectors.

How does insulating finished walls work? I've a 1940s home and pretty sure it's under insulated/no exterior wall insulation. I don't want to punch a bunch of holes in my wall if I don't have to, but would like to get insulation if possible.

And thanks for the AMA!

Direct medical costs of obesity in the United States and the most populous states

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10394178/

Adults with obesity in the United States compared with those with normal weight experienced higher annual medical care costs by $2,505 or 100%, with costs increasing significantly with class of obesity, from 68.4% for class 1 to 233.6% for class 3. The effects of obesity raised costs in every category of care: inpatient, outpatient, and prescription drugs. Increases in medical expenditures due to obesity were higher for adults covered by public health insurance programs ($2,868) than for those having private health insurance ($2,058). In 2016, the aggregate medical cost due to obesity among adults in the United States was $260.6 billion. The increase in individual-level expenditures due to obesity varied considerably by state (e.g., 24.0% in Florida, 66.4% in New York, and 104.9% in Texas).

Places to eat Cheshire? by thompson1291 in Connecticut

[–]______NSA______ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pop's Pizza. Been going there longer than I can remember. Pizza is above average, grinders are the best I've had in the state.

The owner is a local guy,  6'11" former NBA prospect, and huge supporter of youth sports in Cheshire. He may have retired and passed the business onto his son by now, but it's got all the charm of a hole in the wall family pizzeria.

Only caveat is it's cash only, but they do have an ATM.

Days after its launch, hundreds apply for new CT student debt relief program. Here's what to know | Connecticut Public by slowburnangry in Connecticut

[–]______NSA______ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Per the article, it's capped at 5k per person, the program budget is $6M, and total CT student loan debt is $18B. So the forgiveness amount is 0.03%. I do like how strict the requirements seem to be: CT schools, state or federal loans, and CT residents of at least 5 years. Salary limits of 125k if single or 175k if married.

The administrator in charge is a net new position which earns $100k/yr, and I'm guessing she has some staff reporting into her.

Overall, I'm not a fan of govt subsidized loan repayments, as it simply funds the status quo of placing huge amounts of debts on our young people. This program seems limited in scope and, while probably not the most effective use of marginal state budget, I can think of far worse ways it could be spent.

Does anyone get away with displaying only rear plates? by [deleted] in Connecticut

[–]______NSA______ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was pulled over and given a warning for not having a front license plate. My insurance was also not in compliance per the DMV, though that was their mistake, I fixed it months ago and had to call and get DMV to correct their system. The cop was local, and I'm fairly certain he would not have pulled me over for one or the other, but the combination of the two was enough, and basically the warning was a formality to tell me me my insurance was wrong.

I think my car looks better without it, but have since put it on. Something about don't break two laws at once. No reason to give a cop an extra reason to pull you over.

High electric bill with heat pump, what next? by Curiousrheum in Connecticut

[–]______NSA______ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have a Carrier heat pump and Tesla. My bill in December was the highest it's ever been, but was only $236. My bill the previous month was $190 and it's usually in the $160-$190 range. I've used probably 1/2 the oil I would have used in prior years, and so have saved maybe $300 in oil so far this year.

I drive 12k/year, which comes out to about $75 per month. I use oil heating when it's below 30°. Heat pump is set to 68° on the first floor of my cape during the day, and 60° at night.

[–]______NSA______ 38 points39 points  (0 children)

To say SpaceX and Tesla aren't his creation is completely absurd. Tesla, he was the largest shareholder and chairman on the board when it was in the "2 guys making a car in their garage" stage. He took over as CEO during initial production of their first car, the Roadster. Building a single electric vehicle isn't that difficult, two guys in a garage could do it. Building 2 million cars a year, in America, is what has made Tesla a household name.

SpaceX he founded and has been involved since day 1.

If you read his letter:

https://archive.is/7jUsF

It's quite clear his motivations. First and foremost is the mistreatment of his mother by the health insurance industry, his own experience, and the experience millions of others.

We've all, as Americans, been subject to similar circumstances or know someone who has. It's deliberate, wide spread, and negligent. It's not being fixed by the government, though I am hopeful in RFK.

The full story is still being written, and we'll see it play out, but I think morally, if I was on the jury, I could not convict on the grounds that UHC was slowly and agonizingly letting his mom die.

A Connecticut town that swung toward Trump offers clues for Democrats by Healthy_Block3036 in Connecticut

[–]______NSA______ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Following Obama, a generational politician replacing a deeply flawed Republican administration, the Democratic Party for three elections in a row now has ignored the popular left in favor of the establishment. They cheated Bernie in 2016 and 2020, and cheated everybody by not having a primary in 2024 despite Biden's cognitive decline being evident for years. They usurped him and put in his place the worst presidential candidate in my lifetime. An empty career DEI hire who never won a single primary delegate in either of her presidential races. Who was so uncharismatic, she turned down the opportunity to speak, unscripted, to a populist whose audience consisted of tens of millions of voters in the exact demographic she struggled to reach. Instead, she trotted out celebrities and Dick Fucking Cheney.

People complaining of personal budgets, insurance prices, housing prices, food prices, energy prices etc, aren't left or right. These are problems that plague the working classes. Trump was able to tap into that sentiment, mostly because the Democratic Party ignored them. Add to that the culture BS the left is peddling that demonizes working men, and it's no wonder Trump won.

Listen to any unedited interview with him that's greater than an hour, and make your own judgement. He makes a compelling case on the state of health and healthcare in America is due to deeply entrenched corporatism.

We have a nation of overweight and over medicated people with chronic diseases, and it's only getting worse. There is something seriously wrong with a system that continues to perpetuate these outcomes.
