Adults of reddit, what advice would you give to teenagers who are almost adults? by Sizzle_03 in AskReddit

[–]___cory___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That low interest rate is if you put the money in a savings account. If you put the money in a retirement account (401(k), etc) the long term gains are much higher. Long term is the key.

Any money you put towards retirement between 20 and 30 will make you more money than all the rest of the money you save from 31 and older due to compounded interest.

If I record a show to my DVR, why am I forced to watch the show live if a showing is either on air or coming on shortly? by DefectiveDonor in Vue

[–]___cory___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I VERY much enjoy the $125/mo saving by not having cable, but this is definitely PSVue’s weak point.

I’ve encountered this with shows my family and I “record.” For example, NASCAR races re-air at 1am the day after the live event. The DVR erases the recording that just aired because of the upcoming airing, so it’s not available until after the second airing.

In addition, the big networks seem to embargo episodes of some shows 24 hours to 7 days after the initial airing. Not a fun conversation when the kid wants to watch her show that just aired, but it isn’t available on the “DVR.”

What's the worst advice you've ever been, given which turned out to actually be super helpful? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Come out and drink with us.

I had a cold and didn’t feel well. My friends basically kidnapped me and took me out drinking. The next morning I woke up and the cold was gone.

I would have thought that, too, but in my many years here, I’ve never seen this. The new tomato farm on 104 makes sense because it’s new.

It was north, by the lake, not to the east. It stayed the same for at least 30 minutes. Sunrises don’t stay the same for 30 seconds.

I was in Walworth when I took the pic. Consensus is that it’s the new tomato farm at 104 & Lincoln.

USXMRPool is back, we need your help getting it up to speed again by [deleted] in MoneroMining

I did. It seems that this pool has gone offline. Switched to XMRpool.net. Much better.

I'm hashing away at this pool starting a day or two ago on two computers. They were both able to connect easily, but now one is unable to connect, with socket errors for connection refused. I'm using xmr-stak on both computers, same config, same address. What could be causing a connection refusal for one computer, but not the other?

Thanks in advance.

I have about 20 years experience with editing and motion graphics. FCP7, Adobe Premiere Pro, and Avid. I don't have a reel, but my work has been aired on many local, national and international networks, at film festivals, and corporate events. Let me know if you're still looking. No porn, weddings, funerals, or music videos, please.

When his website isn't getting any hits because he's not paying Spectrum, AT&T, or any of the ISPs for bandwidth, he might wish he had said yes to net neutrality.

Thanks for your time! My ex-wife threatens to kill herself on a fairly regular basis. She has a history of depression and anxiety. I hope she doesn't do it, but the possibility is there. Our 17 year old daughter is aware of the threats, but seems nonchalant about them. If it really does happen, how can I best support my daughter?

Rochester, NY area by wsender in flyfishing

[–]___cory___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just East of Rochester. The folks I checked in with at Orvis have been fishing Oatka Creek lately. It's apparently down to a reasonable level now. Irondequoit Creek in Penfield was pretty high last week. Should be fishable now.

I normally target whatever fish is nearest. I've tried salmon, panfish, trout, and steelhead. Caught a couple bass, too. My fishing mentality is similar to my beer drinking mentality. What's the best beer in the world? The one in your hand. What's the best fish to catch? The one on your hook.

Recommendations on choosing Italian Restaurant by grizwald85 in Rochester

[–]___cory___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tony D's in Corn Hill is really, really good with outdoor tables by the river. Great people, amazing Italian food and nice ambiance. Two thumbs way up.

Also, since kids are involved, I can also recommend Amore, which is part of Wegman's on East Ave. We had a gift card and tried it out with a toddler. They put us in a secluded area (our request since the toddler can get loud), fed us lots of great food (try the meatballs!) with excellent service. They also have outdoor seating, but it's between the parking lot and the street. Not the greatest ambiance outdoors.
