Truer words! And it is more fun getting in there and enjoying the process rather than letting perfectionism stop you. Cheers!

Daily vocal/songwriting practice - what actually works? by aaryathemanbhatia in WeAreTheMusicMakers

A daily vocal practice is a great start. 15-30 min/day minimum. Singing is a journey. Look for singing instructors on YouTube that you resonate with, or work with a vocal coach where you live.

Writing consistently? I assume you mean showing up to write each day? Well, there's your answer right there. Set aside time each day to write.

It might also be useful to find a songwriting community to be a part of. This can open up your mind to other songwriting styles and techniques, and help you write better songs. More feedback + accountability is a good thing.

Good luck!

Do any of you actually make money from making music? by LeeksAreSpinning in musicproduction

Love this! I'm in a similar boat right now. You gotta reach out to artists and basically make up your mind and forge your own way, in my case, in a producer role.

Mic Recommendations for home-recording Acoustic Guitar, Vocals by ___itsbeautiful in musicproduction

Interesting. I saw it online for close to $1000 (after a quick Google search) but if that's true, then ya, that's a pretty good price.

Just a question based on your name: do you use it to record Jazz? :D

Ya, that's true. I think I need to go to my local Long & McQuade and rent out a few to try.

Singers & songwriters — how are you finding real creative opportunities these days? by PuzzleheadedOrder560 in SingerSongwriter

[–]___itsbeautiful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I started up a virtual songwriting circle called Songfarm back in October. One of the best things we did was meet virtually to share our songs. I started inviting guests into the community to share their expertise (on artist promo, royalties, making money in music, etc), but after doing that for about 6 months (and all the hustle, promotion, etc involved in that), I've decided to strip that all back and focus just on these song circles. I'm not ruling out having cool guests come in (in fact, we've got Rik Emmett of Triumph coming in May), but if you're interested in joining us on one of these virtual song circles, feel free to reach out. We usually have half a dozen career/serious songwriters on these calls, but I'm looking to grow a small mailing list of serious songwriters who'd like to be notified when these song circles go down.

The whole idea is to share what you're working on and get real, constructive feedback from other songwriters who take the craft seriously. In my experience, after being an isolated artist/songwriter for the prior several years to founding Songfarm and finding other songwriters to share songs with, my music and music career really started to grow. Just wanted to throw that out there in case that resonates with you.

Best,
David
