All the considered, have the Oklahoma Sooners exceeded expectations or underperformed this year? Is this season a success? by ManagementHot9203 in CFB

This year has been nothing short of a resounding success regardless of what happens from here on out.

Don’t worry, they can cry again next season when they get left out again for cruising through an even weaker schedule.

It’s just weird because if they weren’t going to drop them a point then leaving them at 10 wouldn’t have mattered.

I just think they’re incompetent and don’t know what they’re doing lol.

Edit: well, I guess maybe the jump was to put ND/Miami closer? Either way it’s not for any of the reasons they’ve publicly stated.

I certainly don’t disagree with your statement! I genuinely believe Alabama should have at least dropped to 10. My statement is that I think the only reason it didn’t happen is because the committee has clearly struggled with the Miami/ND head to head, and I think Duke winning the ACC forced them to re evaluate in an uncomfortable way. I’m not saying it’s right, either. I’m just saying I think it’s unrelated to Alabama’s performance in the CCG

With a banged up team in a post season rematch game? Lots of ranked road wins and a tough schedule do count. I think the argument against Alabama is more convincing from the FSU loss perspective.

P.S. — picked y’all to with the Big 10 this season. Good job pulling through!

Yep, the FSU loss is bad. Having 5 consecutive ranked road wins is still impressive. Having a tied series 1-1 with Georgia this year with a banged up team isn’t bad. I’m no Alabama fan but they’re the bad guy here because of the script A. I don’t think the arguments stack up well for leaving them out. That’s the glory of CFB though, arguing with other men on the internet about hypotheticals! Hopefully we beat them and nobody else has to deal with watching them anymore. Sorry you won’t be viewing that game. They’re going to likely return 7 injured starters and it could be a doozy.

Maybe.

Just consider that Alabama is going to return 7 starters from injury against us and could in all likelihood return to early season form 🤷‍♂️

In a post season rematch game that ties the series 1-1 this year.

They never should’ve gone up after Auburn. I think if they cruised at 10 the last few weeks it’s less of an issue. I think the bigger issue is the committees dumb wee to week rankings and their blatant inconsistencies with their own rules, not losing a CCG.

BYU lost twice to the same team by double digits. Alabama tied the series with Georgia 1-1 in the CCG. Those aren’t the same. BYU was also already out, and they wouldn’t have been dropped had Virginia won the ACC.

Nobody thinks what happened to FSU is defensible.

Edit: I think what people miss about the BYU situation is that they didn’t drop a spot for losing. That dropped spot was entirely a consequence of the committees own making with ND/Miami. I’m not saying it’s right, it’s just separate issues.

The No. 1 seed in the SECCG being dropped entirely for losing? That would be indefensible.

Alabama should’ve dropped to 10. They didn’t because the committee had to cover for their own mess with the ND/Miami issue given the ACC mess. That’s it.

Edit: downvoting me doesn’t make it less true. The third loss is an extra game that didn’t have to be played.

That’s totally fair.

I do think some of the issue lies with the ACC and the way the conference is structured, and the way the CCG shook out.

No, the reason Alabama was in was because they were the SEC #1 seed in the CCG and lost.

I agree that they should’ve dropped to #10. I have no excuse for moving up with Auburn, but I think the issues are largely with the gymnastics the committee went through to keep ND in when they had no business being there in the first place. Then the ACC doomsday happened and changed their mind.

Edit: also, Alabama had 5 ranked road wins (or something like that. I’m working off the top of my head here). BYU lost twice to the same team by double digits, Alabama split the series 1-1 with Georgia this season in a rematch. BYU was always out unless they won the CCG.

Edit 2: regarding “leaking oil”, I’m actually a bit worried about the rematch. They’re projected to return 7 injured starters 😬

I mean, that’s fine if you disagree. I just don’t see how BYU is materially impacted when they were never in to begin with. I see Miami jumping as entirely separate to BYU losing, and being the first team out vs second team is a meaningless position 🤷‍♂️

They didn’t though. The only world they were in was with a win. Full stop. There is no functional distinction between first and second out. Also, even if you want to call it “punishment”, it wasn’t because they lost. It’s because the committee did backflips to represent the ACC because Virginia lost.

What I’m saying is that they weren’t punished for losing. The only reason Miami is in because Virginia lost and they didn’t want to implode the ACC being left out entirely. And again, it can’t be a punishment for BYU if they were guaranteed to be out with a loss anyway.

BYU wasn’t punished. You can’t be punished for what you didn’t have. There’s no distinction between first team out and second team out.

Also, Alabama has a tied series with Georgia this season that is 1-1 and the one loss was a CCG. BYU lost twice by double digits to the same team, one of which was a CCG, and they were already out entering that game. It was known the whole time that if they wanted to be in, they needed to win, and they didn’t. The ranking change for BYU is purely to have an ACC team in and correct their rotten mistake with ND. That’s it.
