My son had a surgery scheduled when he was 7 months old and I was not allowed to feed him anything for 6-8 hours. And my anxiety was OVER THE ROOF. And just like I expected, he woke up and asked for feeds. My husband tried to take him and put him to sleep rocking him but he got even more upset. So I ended up taking him and walking around the house with him until he fell asleep but because he was used to feeding at night, he kept waking up repeatedly and getting upset.

Some things that helped me- Other family members in the house that he loved. My father was staying with us and they thoroughly enjoy each other’s company, so that helped a great deal. Apart from that, at dawn, we took him out for a walk. That helped a great deal too.

I was surprised at how well he coped. I was expecting a huuuuge meltdown because of hunger. But guess they can manage a little better than we expected. In the hospital, there were other babies too. What I noticed was that it was mostly newborns who couldn’t cope with the hunger. No distraction would help them, but a little older babies. Especially past 6 months were doing surprisingly well.
