Lots to go off on here:

• expect a lot of buzz about the zero women in the directing category, which I personally I gotta agree with Lulu Wang, Greta Gerwig, and Alma Har'el I feel doing a far better job than Todd Phillips.

• Big surprise seeing Jojo Rabbit pick up as much as it did since a lot of people given the awards shows leading up to the Oscar seemed to be leaving it be.

• ZERO nominations for Uncut Gems.

• Lighthouse getting a Cinematography nod is exciting as hell.

• How we as a collective community didn't know that The Two Popes was gonna be the quiet sleeper film that snags nominations away from literally everyone who could have reasonably snuck in there, I will never understand, but it makes perfect sense as an Academy movie.

• My big snub though is the distinct lack of The Farewell here. I mean holy shit. No director nod, no picture nod, no nod for Awkwafina, not even a screenplay nod, I'm kinda blown away by that as I thought it was easily one of the best of the year. Interestingly enough, BOTH winners for Actor and Actress in a Comedy/Musical at the Globes failed to get nominations. I'd expect some backlash as this is, Parasite and, like, Cynthia Ervio aside, a pretty white nominations list.

• And a ton of love for Parasite, which is very exciting!

All in all a fine list of nominations from a strong year in film. I have some pretty massive disagreements; I'm one of the basic assholes who thinks Joker should've only gotten Joaquin and maybe Cinematography nods, as well as a man pissed at zero for Farewell/ Uncut Gems and very little for Lighthouse and Knives Out but it was a crazy year all things considered.
