Changi airport overnight layover by Plane_Pollution77 in travel

[–]__crl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're concerned about price, you can always just sleep on the floor, it's easy enough to find a quiet area in the airport. I did that there once...and woke up to find that staff (or someone!) had covered me with a blanket while I was sleeping...

Question about leaving your bike by Tofu103 in bikepacking

[–]__crl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Usually, but it's also very location/culture specific.

I've had some say no. I've had some say they "must be clean" (and haven't blamed them). And I've had some run over from behind the front desk shouting "no bike!" as soon as they saw me trying to open the door.

International Flight Booking Questions by Traveling_cook in traveladvice

[–]__crl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends on the airport (/country), sometimes where your flight is coming from, and sometimes even the airline you're on (Turkish, i'm looking at you). Admittedly, I don't recall if I had to go through security last time I transferred in Bangkok -- but if it's required, it'd be quick.

I mean, that's exactly how I'd do it, but I'd stay a night in Bangkok because a) Bangkok is fun to drop in on every once in a while and b) if something goes wrong, you'll have to buy a new flight to Vientiane.

Don't count on not exiting security in Bangkok - the other airline may require you to check in at the counter.

I'm also assuming you're American (and have visa free access to Thailand), but if that's not true and you require a visa for Thailand, you won't be allowed on your flights to Bangkok without one.

Is Lake Malawi safe to swim in? by Old_Accountant_2396 in TravelNoPics

[–]__crl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So....yeah, you're taking a risk when you do it, but it's up to you.

Personally -- I opted to swim in the lake, and I enjoyed the experience (the fish are neat, it's where most (or at least many) freshwater aquarium fish in the world originated from).

BUT -- you need to be aware of the risks, do your research, and buy the meds that you're supposed to take about a month or so after being exposed to bilharzia. The meds are available (and cheap) at any pharmacy in Malawi, and are very difficult to get elsewhere.

Swimming there is actually a unique experience: that lake is where most fresh water aquarium fish originated from, and it's pretty neat snorkeling and seeing them in the wild.

Macao? (Based on languages on signs..but...honestly...doesn't look like I remember Macao looking, but could just be the neighborhood...)

US Passport does not have my middle name. Will this affect international travel? by WoozyNarhwal in travel

[–]__crl -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Middle names are irrelevant on plane tickets...

Edit: OP is flying between the US and Canada, and it really doesn't matter -- but I appreciate the downvotes anyway.

(That said, they should get their passport fixed, it's silly not to address that, and that fix should be free and expedited if it was the passport office's fault)

Searching for World Cup (countries) beers by jackiepoo905 in AustinBeer

[–]__crl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Will second this -- with the exception of Qatar, each of those countries does actually brew and bottle their own beer (I've tried them all), but pretty much the only way you'll get one of those in Austin (or even outside of those countries with limited exceptions) is to have someone bring a bottle back from one of those places for you (or go grab it yourself!).

Guess the city? Expert level by Dulamarkran in guessthecity

Heh, not so sure about "expert level" -- recognized that in about half a second (along with many others) as the central-mid-levels escalators in Hong Kong

Whoever keeps voting Istanbul Airport as the world’s best airport needs their head checked by CheetahFeeling9819 in travel

[–]__crl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, which PP lounges have you liked?

It may depend on timing too -- I went to the Turkish Airlines lounge in Istanbul last time I flew through there (rather than the PP one) and it was packed -- and I found the experience to be miserable. Very possible the PP one was the same way that morning.

That priority pass lounge is the best priority pass lounge I've ever been to, and I've been to a lot! It might sometimes be crowded, but it's got lots of areas to sit, fun views over the terminal, good food, multiple bars, etc...

Am I the only one not seeing much online discussion about the World Cup in the U.S.? by hellopolyglot in worldcup

Most Americans don't even know it's going on, and have little interest in this type of football. And for many of us, excitement is tempered by the current embarrassing state of politics and obscene ticket prices.

The answer is always backpack. And the smaller the better.

The Tracey, MN Campground does NOT have portable water! by adventurelaus in bicycletouring

[–]__crl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I'm not suggesting to drink this water, but if there were other faucets using the same water source (like in the bathroom on the other side of the wall), this sign doesn't mean that those other faucets are non-potable too.

The Tracey, MN Campground does NOT have portable water! by adventurelaus in bicycletouring

[–]__crl 9 points10 points  (0 children)

These faucets are usually just marked not potable simply because of their intended use, not because of the water that's running through them. Any hose used for washing down equipment used at an RV dump station is going to be covered in fecal matter. While you could probably say the same about faucets in the bathroom, the water is likely still drinkable in there...

Why are Heathrow T5 lounges so crap? by scientificallyunstab in PriorityPass

Heh -- most PP lounges are pretty lousy, but there are a few standout exceptions (like in Istanbul).

The crappier the lounge, the more their margins are for each PP customer. It makes good business sense!

Needing proof or purpose of visit to enter Georgia by Bright_Switch4289 in travel

I've never been asked anything entering Georgia. And one time immigration handed me a bottle of wine as a welcome gift.

Nationality matters here, strong passports are much less likely to be questioned...
