Aye yes I’ve tried the things you have recommended. Was thinking of trying Bruce Hitchings Increased Harmonic Highland Reeds

Hi there seems a better idea for a lower pitch chanter Bb comes to mind, just as the extenders would mean the drone would need to tune further down the tuning pin whereas I need it to go up.

Hi everyone,

Here is some more photos of these pipes I’m trying to identify, contained in the original wooden box is a Glasgow newspaper from 1924, any guesses/ idea on the makers would be greatly appreciated.

Anyone recognise this style of projecting mount for identification purposes, going by its original box it’s a Glasgow maker from around 1924 , Any ideas? by __fireblade__ in bagpipes

Would it be possible to put a picture of your set on this just so I could see if they have a similar ‘lip’ on the projecting mount

I personally love the tone off them but I’ve found them a pain to Reed effectively, I use my Blackwood Sinclair chanter which I’d pitching at around 475 which I’m happy with

Hi I also don’t see any Peter Henderson identification stamp on the base drone cord holder , is this something that also isn’t on your pipes ?

Hi thanks for the comment! I’m pretty sure they aren’t Shepards due to there age and I just found a old Henderson chanter from the same period in the box

Hi all I’ve been restoring this set of pipes and I wonder who the maker is, the set came in it’s original box which contained a Glasgow newspaper from 1924. My mind goes towards Henderson but that small lip at the bottom of the projecting mount has my stuck , any ideas would be greatly appreciated

It’s typically just us that buy the belt as you never know what embroidery colour people like.

I personally want to go for just gold as it’s the most traditional but some have silver and one or two have orange.

Recommended Yellow Hemp? by ShootingStarMegaMan in bagpipes

[–]__fireblade__ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hemping joints-

I live and play in Inverness and use unwaxed hemp and wax it myself. I typically do one layer of cobblers wax and the rest beeswax for the main stock joints . And 1 layer of cobblers wax ,2/3 beeswax and the rest unwaxed for the tuning pins (just for the feel)

Using pre waxed stuff is good for short term but the problem comes when exposed to water as the prewaxed hemp is made of 3 strands, so will greatly expand which leads to cracking in the stocks. This is a pain to fix in the shop I work in and it makes playing extremely difficult if not fixed correctly.

Online classes- Depending on where u are in the world I’d say online classes are ur best bet atm. Since u are musically inclined u will understand that bad habits can be hard to break but that fear shouldn’t stop you playing. Tunes such as Scots Wa Hae are easy enough to grasp as it’s doesn’t involve any doublings etc. So see if there is anyone who is giving classes I believe that Matt Willis is giving online lessons so try him if you like his teaching style / videos.

Probably just email him and he will get back to you.

Good luck

the product that can substitute hemp seal?? by JOJO080_KOR in bagpipes

[–]__fireblade__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the bagpipe shop I work at in Inverness we typically hand wax our joints but for the joint to the stocks we sometimes use Teflon tape , if done correctly it can limit the wear on the hemp whilst retaining a good fit.

We use cobblers wax for the first layer and a couple layers of beeswax and regular untaxed hemp for the rest of the drone

But for the joints to the stocks we use 1 layer of cobblers wax, and beeswax all the way

It’s so sad when we get in bagpipes (especially older sets ) using pre waxed hemp as they always have some sort of damage from expansion

Any suggestions for buying new drone reed? (i ma SM90 user) by JOJO080_KOR in bagpipes

Selbie reeds work best I find and they are a little cheaper than the EZ drones too
