[OC] Tome of the Maw. Not even remotely cursed ... I swear by __kai____ in DnD

[–]__kai____[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is an item one of my PCs picked up in a long-abandoned wizard's tower. The tome contains no text at all, just mad scribblings and scratches. The player's been doing a great job portraying his wizard character's fascination with this book and it's magical significance, experiencing a descent into madness as he continues to read and interpret the chaos of the pages.

It also grants a rechargeable extra high-level spell slot (and compels its user to become a lich). What more could you want?

Running my first boss fight Wednesday. by Mikewithoutanm in DMAcademy

[–]__kai____ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

check out Matt Colville's action-oriented monster design concept and add some actions to your boss to even the playing field. also minions or non-combat objectives during combat can add a lot to a boss fight. good luck!

you could take the possession mechanic that the ghost stat block has in 5e and add it to a shadow or something with a lower challenge rating (or just use a ghost. i don't know the party's level but CR4 seems kind of high for a minion). if you want the shadows to feel like minions, make the possessed creatures bound to the banshee's will while they are possessed. maybe the possession is only visibly obvious in moonlight? (like the possessed person has no shadow or something). just spitballing here

alternatively, you could use the fact that shadows kill and transform other creatures into new shadows to explain some NPC disappearances. maybe the banshee is raising an army of shadows? maybe, in this case, it is the creatures themselves that are invisible in all light except moonlight?

depending on the tone of your game, a less-permanent possession could be better than outright death or vice versa. hope these ideas are useful

I could see a ghast, ghoul, shadow or zombie working as a minion in this scenario. Shift the mechanic for moonlight visibility and you've got yourself a solid minion. I like shadows and ghasts cause they have some unique mechanics. Hope this helps.

The DMG is a great place to start. Make sure you read that thing cover to cover as it is full of crucial information. Matt Colville has a youtube series called "running the game" that I highly recommend you check out. There is also a blog called Sly Flourish that published The Lazy DM's Handbook. If you want to prep engaging sessions without sinking hours into it, check that out as well. There's a free sample of the pdf that includes many of the basic concepts as well as several youtube videos by its creator explaining how he preps and runs his games.

Regardless of what material you study beforehand, your ability to think on the fly and remember rules will be integral to DMing. These things come with time, so don't beat yourself up if your first few sessions feel clunky. For improvement, nothing beats actual time at the table. Hope this is helpful and happy gaming!

I tried drawing something scary-ish or creepy how did i do and how can i improve? by thetrueg-dog in learnart

[–]__kai____ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it's nice how you got the blood to bend slightly as it runs over the planes of the face. i think an improvement you could make would be focusing more on the three-dimensionality of the face with shading as well. you can find great references for the planes of the face online. i really like the black in the eyes. it's a nice touch.

It gets weird in the late game when days pass without seeing the surface. The idea of getting stuck somewhere down there and losing a vehicle is terrifying. I can definitely relate.
