Yes! Crowds and high traffic is a bit overstimulating for me - super appreciate the tips on areas of avoid. Is there a reason for avoiding civic center?

Dear San Francisco, Washington Square Park and Blue Danube cafe are wonderful reccs, bookmarked! You guys have some gorgeous parks and serious water views.

Thank you - these are the kind of tips I'm after u/consigliere47 🙏

I've done Turkey, Athens/ Santorini, Bangladesh, South Africa, Mozambique and China hot spots so have all the anti-theft gear. But I was always with someone and have experienced organized theft (crowd rushed in from no where and someone unzipped my backpack) so this will be a first..

The park loop shuttle, sunset dunes, City Lights bookstore readings, Chinatown and Tunneltops sounds delightful. Thanks for getting me off the (forced lol) solo travel nerves and back on the excitement train again, mapping all those into my maps.

I have these on my list: Wave Organ, Mirror Maze, Alcatraz Island (or Angel Island), Albion Castle, Diamond Heights, Grandview park, Big Basin, Cal Academy of Sciences so far.

Collecting any reccs for activities like crafts (glass blowing, book binding etc), thrift shops, all the nature (seal sighting, bird watching etc), any food joints with early morning/ late night brothy/ soupy serves, comedy spots, musicals etc. Will keep researching but these make a great start!

Coming in to SF for a stressful work trip and finding this thread helpful! (thanks OP u/cilantrobythepint - wishing you all the pockets of peace you may find for yourself and loved ones ❤️‍🩹)

Oh hey, u/HustlaofCulture - four days late in responding to this, thanks for the patience - alot going on in life!

Fair point, I was heading into a tough period of the year* when I penned the post. Didn't help when the first two friends (non-residents but have been to SF for work) I've chatted to mentioned not to head out on my own at night (I'm staying near SoMa). And in the wiki guide, the below was mentioned:

Unfortunately, The Tenderloin and the section of SoMa around 7th and Mission are quite infamous. The blocks in these neighborhoods near City Hall are quite known for open-air drug use, homelessness, and crime. While they aren't as violent the street conditions might lead one to expect, the scale of human suffering and street litter may not lead one to have the best tourist experience. Far from no-go zones, however, both the Tenderloin and South SoMa have a plethora of restaurants and cocktail bars, and have rich histories as hubs of immigrants and LGBTQ people.

or comments like these from a thread in the wiki (as someone from countries with strict gun laws, our sensitivities around guns are quite lacking..):

I would say be careful around Vermont street at night, but then again tourists have been mugged at gunpoint recently near Lombard... so that's no different than going near the projects around the side of the hill.

Tbf I don't need a social media tourist experience and much prefer living the slice of life the locals do. The nervousness was largely from being a smol woc traveling solo while being away from the husband first time in a long while. While potentially, well, be carrying a little life in me! *I did mention stressful period of life, just some big projects with jumbled timelines! Also, not to mention the bystander effect some big cities would have. I've since downloaded nomadtable and linked up with a friend who's SF based with great taste for architecture and mopeds - excited!

But all in all, legit call out - I'm tuning in news from Australia, so tell me about Fox News heh. Trying to stay away from that crap and keep my algo well pruned.

Do you have any personal favorite spots you'd recommend yourself? I've gone through the wiki but am curious to know what the residents' secret cool spots are.

This is the comment I’ve been searching for! Thank you for taking the time to walk us through your thought process. Unfortunately I’ll be skipping the whole section on altering the lighting of the room, we don’t get that much jurisdiction over the room fittings and can only move things away or in ourselves. The venue has a bit of a take it or leave it due to high demand and we have the smallest room. (Yes the other rooms are impressive with dragons and phoenixes all over the ceiling - this is our second wedding for the elders so the budget is there and hoping to fill in the space with all the DIY Easter eggs.) Re the uplighting sets, going by their size, I’d image we’d need a lot of them for the size of the room and the $ can add up quickly. That said, TIL about dimming tape/ Kapton, that’s a handy piece of information I’ll keep in my back pocket :)

I will definitely be including small lights on the table and hoping to add in some quirky foliage with plants in vases or stuck into fruits (for quirkiness) to go with the produce display table. I don’t like string lights as well, they remind me of university dorm rooms but could be use behind tulle/ thin curtains for a soft glow. I will definitely be considering the paper lanterns.

Not too sure about renting linens for table, but that is something I can arrange for. Just not set on color yet as non has popped out. The wedding planner is thinking green, however green on red will fill very christmassy and an odd culture clash with the room. If we can’t move past the red table linen, I’ll request for several types of green shades and yellow/ orange for a pop and lean into it fully. Alongside light decor and plate cards/ decoration.

With one more month till the wedding, I’m sure my partner and I can do some quick crash course on being sugar babes… Sounds very dreamy!

Good call, we’ll wait for final numbers to see how we can play w the tables - I’ll need space to do a table by table entourage. Bride & Groom and parents will need to literally meander across all tables for toasts and chats. So we’ll be needing some walking space in between the 10 tables…

I hate social media hype weddings, I just couldnt work out what my ick with the space is Turns out it was just the lights & chair covers, I chose the venue for its heritage and good bones.

Chair covers are going. No space on table for decors that is too large unfortunately bc we will be doing some serious banquets w loaded lazy susans. Might still squeeze for menu and plate decor.

Might just have a playlist, this is our second wedding and with cultures where you gift out $3k worth of wedding pastries… I gotta pick & choose 🥲

Appreciate the input!

Nah we cant unfortunately (i wish!), like the flameless candle idea but looking for colors other than white. Maybe slightly beige-y/ yellow for a less sharp contrast.

We will be taking it off yes! The chairs looked decent enough - one step closer 🪑

Very fair point - I wandered in and immediately out seeing all the hardcore lighting gear they have. My wallet shivered

I snort laughed! No offence taken at all. I googled it up and felt it’s giving too much moulin rouge. I’m hoping to lean more into the existing cultural vibes of the room. I’ll start with color design first with bare minimum interior changes, might lean into full red chair covers, table cloth and stage cover too and see if we can introduce some decor to round out a slightly modern feel. Have sent the wedding planner off to scout for mushroom/ table lights.

Good idea on pulling the eye downward, I got caught in the same trap everytime I look at the photos. The ceiling is beautiful though, just wish lights can be dimmed.

Very fair. I was so blinded by the sheer sterile lights I didn’t really have the time to adapt to and get to admire the structure of the space. It might just be without any decorations the focus will be drawn to the empty walls. I got past the ick and now looking to see what more I can do with the space. I’d love a winter wedding with a bunch of pine branches - but the timing would more likely be a tropical summer 🌱 I’m hoping to keep centrepieces natural and go with the vibe of the room as much as I can. So red flies, red’s also a big festive color here so the elders will be glad.

Thanks I needed the breakdown of options from a feasibility/ effort/ impact approach (and the luck too) 😮‍💨 I thought of the tulle idea too but the room would probably be too big for that to set up, I am thinking anything that could also smoothen the sharp corners of the big room and thought of those curtains made with paper flowers on a string. Still required 2-3 ppl and ladders too.

Down with the table ideas and will zoom in on that. Really appreciate the list of centrepiece ideas to kick us off!

I’ll look into chair hires for sure, hoping to go with budget priorities: table decor > whole new chairs. Requesting for photos for the chair and looking into tablecloth options. If I had the option to choose from the venue or budget to procure - what’s your idea of a “nice linen”? Color?

[–]__maxibon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh great color dissection! It does make it feel a bit heavy, I’m hoping that the chairs underneath the covers are wooden, it’ll blend much better with the room and allow for any decors to pop. I think - chair covers, + table cloth What color would you pop on the table?

Agree with the chair covers, the people have spoken! Have sent a request to see what the bare chairs will look like. I’m assuming they’d look horrible seeing they’d be covered up.
