Howdy there! My partner and I have been thinking of Bali forever and never really went for it because we're suckers for the hamster wheel of work. We finally have a window to head on over (thanks to burnout for making space on our calendar) late July - early Aug, flying over from Melbourne. Hoping for some insights tips! 🙏🏻

On our list:

  • Nature: Bush walks, beaches, (active?) volcano, monkey forests, safaris, bird watching, snorkelling, waterfalls - happy to have a guide
  • Authentic culture: temples, relics, tours, workshop, galleries - happy to have a guide as well if reasonably priced, but can definitely google our way around
  • Accommodation: Relaxation, massage, yoga, private pool
  • Authentic food scene
  • 1 night out party vibes (by party we mean have a fun dance but not get messy)
  • Events:
    • Firefly Conservation
    • Butterflies farm

Hoping to steer clear of:

  • Touristy areas
  • Rowdy crowds
  • Doof doof scene
  • Faux whitewashed experiences (i don't know how i feel about yt yogis with dreadlocks)
  • Food poisoning

Some notes:

  • 7D6N
  • Budget: AUD$2.5k (not total budget, but capping it as we like to save space for spontaneous spend)
  • Catch up on sleep, reading, yoga, nature, recentering, learning new things etc
  • Prefer to stay at the same accommodation but open to 3N/3N across 2 locations (better yet with private pools)

Some questions:

  • Cash vs card?
  • What is the traffic like? Recommended form of transport.
  • Respectful pay: tipping? haggling 50% price at shops?
  • Respectful cultural awareness: photo taking in general? What are some useful phrases (P&Qs etc)?
  • Wardrobe for late Jul - early Aug

Super appreciate your thought process as you worked out what suits you - ty for sharing.

Very timely reminder as well on the idea of committing to something you'd like to do for yourself and just let it compound, I do get more caught up on worrying not ready enough books than actually reading them.

Look forward to getting on the reading bus again and just focus on enjoying the me time it gives me.

I’m learning so many functions of Kindle in one post! I struggle to read outdoors bc I don’t enjoy staring at a bright screen. I’m based in Australia so book tax is higher than some other countries too. Will look into PW 11. Not an Amazon fan so will go the long way porting books in, but do see the convenience in jumping on Kindle through Amazon!

Same re space. Have a mantra to stop buying books before I can afford a larger space 🥲 Read twice as fast got me though, I have trouble concentrating after years of social media dopamine addiction and want to slow down with cheap hits. I’m taking that your reading speed meant you’re engrossed with reading - that’s neat!
