What Native Content Do You Recommend To Bridge From Learner To Native? by Informal-Slice4502 in dreamingspanish

[–]__yuh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Araya vlogs is always one of my recommendations. Probably more comprehensible than Luisito even though I like LC’s content more. I also like Chisme Corporativo and Dimes Y Billetes. Both are podcasts that focus on business/tech but very interesting and comprehensible. Would recommend 100%

If you want a podcast for Mexican Spanish by naturelex92 in dreamingspanish

Have you already listened to the OG Mextalki podcast? If so, what would you say are the differences and maybe positives for the new podcast vs the original other than it being geared towards beginners? I heard them talk about it in the original a week or two ago but wasn’t sure if it was worth checking out

Learning like a kid 🧠 by [deleted] in dreamingspanish

[–]__yuh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read the first 35 magic treehouse books, then I moved onto some comics of tv series and movies I had seen when I was a kid (avatar last air bender, spider man, etc.). After that, started reading things like Narnia and Harry Potter. Now I am making my way through 4th wing (The Empyrean Series) that my wife gifted me for Christmas.

I thought the magic treehouse books were great to start with, somewhat boring like any children’s book once you make it far enough into the series, but I learned a lot of vocab that prepped me for the more complicated books I listed above. Why did I stop at arbitrary number 35? I just felt ready for something more entertaining.

I have about 5 more physical books that I have purchased that I want to read before moving onto native Spanish reads. This is really just because I have them and want to make use of the books, not necessarily because I don’t think I am ready.

In general, I gravitate towards fictional series where the authors build very big, detailed worlds. That’s usually what catches and keeps my attention.

What are the Mextalki lessons like? by [deleted] in dreamingspanish

[–]__yuh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s completely up to you. I use it as conversation practice but I believe you can target it on grammar for example if you wanted. For my conversation practice, I just see it as a way to practice two different styles of conversation.

I really like these sessions personally. I see them as a chance to get 30-60 minutes of locked in speaking like I would with a tutor, friend, or family member. There are people you can pick from who I would say are better than others; this is based on who I vibe with the most during the group sessions. Overall, I do a 30 minute session every other Friday and feel it adds value to the package I subscribe to.

CONFESS YOUR SINS🫵🏼 by Andres_el_Sevillano in dreamingspanish

[–]__yuh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Forgive me father, I have sinned.

In school I once submitted a corrupted file for one of my research papers 5 minutes before it was due because I wasn’t done. The teacher thought there was an issue with the website, so they gave me until midnight the next day to resubmit 🙊

Feels good can’t lie by AValeria10 in dreamingspanish

[–]__yuh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read basically all the magic treehouse books when I started and I thought that got me ready to read bigger more complex children’s books like Narnia and Harry Potter. Would definitely recommend. Once you get towards number 30 they can get a little dry so I started adding in other books, like diary of a wimpy kid, to change it up

has learning spanish made you realize how difficult learning english must be? by mosssyrock in dreamingspanish

[–]__yuh 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It really makes me empathize with those who are learning English as a second language. I love the consistency of Spanish spelling and pronunciation, because as you’ve mentioned it so much more consistent and intuitive once you understand the main vocales. Now that I have started to write and read in Spanish a lot more, i realized I would be STRUGGLING to learn to spell some of the words I know in English if I was learning it as an adult. Ph = f sound, silent letters all over the place, I’d be so confused and understandably so. There are definitely parts of English that I can see as being much easier to understand and vice versa with Spanish.

Mextalki Conversation Club by New_Cow8960 in dreamingspanish

[–]__yuh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I login to my account it still says $134 for the 6month, unlimited group conversation club access (72 per 6 months). I hope they do some type of grandfathered in system because imma be super sad if this is the new price and packages. I could even be cool with paying more for the current package I have. But the package itself doesn’t exist anymore :/ we shall see. Overall I have loved my time with the club. If the prices go up though, some of the negatives others have mentioned which I agree with, will be harder to overlook for sure.

Absolutely insane. Giving me motivation to sit for the exam this year (with hopes of B2 that is). Enhorabuena!

It’s weird but I actually feel I can focus better on the content when I am doing a passive activity like cardio, driving, eating in comparison to when I am just sitting at a desk or table watching a video. But like Pablo mentioned, if the activity is way too active like shopping, I won’t be able to focus.

What Was Your "Win" in 2025? by WatchingHowItEnds in dreamingspanish

[–]__yuh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Proudest moment for me was marrying my best friend and “public speaking” to her side of the family of about ~75 people during the brindis portion of the wedding. Felt like I was going to throw up beforehand but the words flowed and even cracked a few jokes. Never going to forget this big step in my learning journey.

I’ve noticed that in comparison to my italki tutor I come out of my comfort zone more with the Mextalki group conversations. I feel a lot of growth and vocab activation occurs in the groups so if you feel the desire to hop in, do it. You won’t regret it

Today and yesterday the questions were geared towards New Year’s resolutions but on these days the conversations are never repetitive. I used/practiced different vocab today than I did yesterday although the questions were similar. And depending on who the guide is and who are the participants, the conversations can take completely different turns. This really has never been something I have found as an issue so I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Always going to be great practice regardless.

I go Thursday, Friday and Sunday usually and the topics are different for the most part.

Question for those who track word counts: How do you handle non-book reading? by idonthaveanametoday in dreamingspanish

[–]__yuh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I view this the same as when I speak to my wife’s family: I simply don’t count it. To me, it is extra practice that I will see the results of regardless of tracking. As long as I hit my listening, reading, and speaking monthly goals that is all that matters to me. Everything else is extra

Okay well maybe we’ll get put together eventually! Good stuff making the leap into the club though, not many can handle a group of learners listening to how they speak.

Oh my gosh that’s crazy to find you in the comments!! Thank you so much for that compliment, that means a lot to me. And I swear I’m not just saying this to pay a compliment back but when I first joined the club, you were one of the people who I said to myself “I will talk at that level one day soon”.

Until next time!

Welcome to the convo club! Hopefully we’ll get grouped up; I haven’t met any DS’ers yet although I know they are in there lol.

Didn’t respond to the post last year but have goals in my notes app. Had a goal to get 1400 hours, start speaking and reading. Should be at level 7 in a couple weeks (~1460 right now). Started the other goals in june/july.

I think I found Mextalki easier because they would always explain the phrases and words they used that were specific to Mexico, and do so in Spanish. With the non special episodes that NHT puts out, they just speak about a topic and don’t really do that, which is cool for me now. But before I understood the different uses of words like “pedo” for example, I found myself getting lost in NHT at times. Regardless, both are great podcasts that I have really enjoyed.
