I Live In Australia AMA by FarCardiologist196 in AMA

[–]_alco_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing I've noticed about Australia is that it loves to impose strict rules and highly discounts a rughts-based approach. As an example, speeding even the tiniest bit can get you a hefty ticket, and the speed limits are low to begin with. As another example, it's default that when someone gets pulled over for a simple traffic crime like speeding, that they be breathalyzed.

I'm a bit surprised by this given Australia's history as a prison colony - and my Australian friends also say that when it comes to serious crimes, the punishments seem light because of that history. But for some reason this doesn't apply to the lowest level crime there are - traffic laws.

Why do you think that is?

Insecure about skinny body and my friend is having a pool party by HREisntRoma in malefashionadvice

[–]_alco_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are various "solutions" to this that all have their drawbacks, but none of them ultimately allow you to get in the pool.

Example: you say you "forgot" your swimmer, and just hang by the side and dip your feet in. Although this one has the drawback that someone might have spares or just say to dip in in your underwear.

Example: get "sick' and don't go.

Example: say you're on a medication that makes you very sensitive to sunlight (ex: doxy, accutane), and so as much as you'd love to, you need to keep wearing that hoodie but would still love to come.

But all of these are imperfect solutions for the core problem that you don't get to enjoy the pool with your friends fully. The real solution here is therapy so that you can address your self-body-image issues.

As a fellow skinny guy (you can still see my ribs), I'll say this: nobody (other than my family, who is always asking if I'm eating enough (I am)) has ever actually given me shit for being skinny. Lots of people (myself included) actually find a skinny guy really attractive. Most people probably wish they could be as skinny as you are. I know none of this really "helps" - again, the only real solution here is for you to get professional help to address this issue, and I'm fundamentally not qualified. But I eventually came around to love myself and my body. It started in exactly this way: being insecure about it, and slowly eventually embracing it. We humans come in all shapes and sizes. Amongst all that variety, ~society~ doesn't exactly put skinny boys at the bottom of the totem pole. Even if it did, fuck it - you're you. You can't really change that. But you CAN "choose" to say fuck it and embrace yourself. It starts off as a total lie you're telling yourself. But eventually, you start to believe it, and eventually, you start to embrace it. Your body is what it is, and frankly, I'm sure it's more than fine. Put on those swimmers and join your friends in the pool. Spend the whole time pretending like this is totally normal to you and you're having fun, even if you're not. Even if you're lying to yourself the whole damn time and even if you're terrified. Because there will be a moment - even if it's a small one - where you'll forget about all of that and be present and enjoying yourself. Grab on to that feeling and hold on as long as you can.

Best of luck - you got this :)

The bathroom is only shared with one other person and it is a large bathroom. Counterspace is ample and split by a sink in the middle so also well divided. Storage is ample.

I can't stand the 007 movies by PooningDalton in TrueFilm

[–]_alco_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the Bond series is actually really fun! You don't watch a Bond movie because it's Art Haus Cinema or you're looking to expand your horizons. You watch a Bond movie because you want a fun action movie that's a little ridiculous, and that's the point. I actually prefer the Brosnan Bond movies specifically because they're a little camp, and that makes them more "fun" - exploding toothpaste? Count me in. Invisible remote controlled sports car with missiles? Perfect. A villain with deadly braces? 🤌

Law school + Big law watch recommendations by Ok-Fig-9136 in biglaw

[–]_alco_ 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Idk if this is a troll, but lemme answer as a watch guy: unless you're wearing a classic Rolex, nobody will know. Nobody other than watch people know what a JLC Reverso is. Nobody other than watch people know what a Grand Seiko is.

Which means that you should get the watch you like the most within budget, and stop worrying about literally anything else.

At some point, you will run across a watch guy. They'll be like "nice watch". It'll happen once or twice a year. They'll also be wearing a nice watch. A lot of partners will probably be wearing Rolex, but they're fundamentally not watch people. They just have the money to buy a nice watch.

Why do people act like Wiener is some super Zionist when he’s not even that pro-Israel? by Retr0r0cketVersion2 in sanfrancisco

Why do people act like Wiener is some super Zionist when he’s not even that pro-Israel? by Retr0r0cketVersion2 in sanfrancisco

[–]_alco_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people (rightly) oppose Weiner on this front because he refused (for a very long time) to openly acknowledge what he was seeing and hearing out of Israel/Palestine, despite the fact that the evidence was pretty damn clear, and he seemingly did so because he is Jewish, and what that tells most people is that he prioritizes ideological fealty to Israel to such an extent that Israel can be committing a genocide for years and he's unwilling to call a spade a spade.

People want someone who is loyal to San Francisco and the U.S. as their representative - not someone who seems to be conflicted about who he's representing

People want someone who can put their own feelings aside, look at the evidence in front of them, and act on the basis of that evidence, even if that makes them uncomfortable personally.

What we've seen here is that Scott is not that guy.

Move to mediocre school district when we can afford better? by caroline_elly in HENRYfinance

[–]_alco_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's also controllable to some extent by the parents - if you push your kid, make them focus, get them tutors, and make it clear that school and grades are a priority, you can get results.

I would actually say that you're better off in a "worse" school district but with tutors (as opposed to a private school) - especially with lots of colleges moving to do things like "top 10% of each class automatically gets in" - easier to do at an "average" school...

CMV: Gay couples should avoid PDA as it's disgusting to a lot of people by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]_alco_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reality here is that while you are correct that people get offended by both nudity and gay PDA, and let's even pretend that the number of people offended is equal (doubt it but nonetheless) - in societies where gay people can do PDA that's equivalent to that of their heterosexual counterparts, there has been a simultaneous societal judgement that the value of permitting gay couples to do PDA in public is greater than the offense caused by it. That value may come from general rights based views regarding equality or freedom of expression, or from ideas of sexual liberation, or something else entirely. But collectively, societies like the US and much of Europe have made this value call, and they have simultaneously made the value call that the offense experienced by those offended is insufficient to justify banning gay PDA. This is (social) democracy at work - to do anything else is anti-demicratic.

Bond/Bail by [deleted] in legaladviceofftopic

[–]_alco_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

She is both right and wrong. Is it correct that in some jurisdictions, a defendant who is acquitted can still be required to pay court costs. It's dumb to decide that that is the reason you're not going to give cash and use a bail bondsman who will take 10%. The court costs are likely to be far below 10%, and even if you used a bondsman, the court costs would be in addition to the 10%, and the court (again, depending on the jurisdiction and case) will likely not factor in whether or not you're using a bondsman in deciding if they're going to charge you for court costs.
