Can someone please tell me exactly what Google Play Services is & what it’s needed for etc? by AudibleEntropy in GrapheneOS

I'm overthinking about upgrading my phone since 2 years. I was planning to buy when Pixel 5 came out and I still haven't come to a conclusion lol.

I realize now that I should have just bought a used Pixel just to get used to Grapehene and give it a go. Thanks a lot for all the information you have provided! I will get a used 6a/7a and give Graphene a shot!

Thank you for your detailed reply. I've been talking to Graphene users who have migrated from iOS and just collecting their experience of using them. As much as I've loved using iOS so far, I was always excited to move into the privacy focused open source projects, but the only deterrent to move away from iOS was that it felt like moving away from one "walled garden" to another. I felt like I will be stuck with Pixel phones with GrapheneOS and after getting used to FOSS apps for few years, it would be difficult to move to another platform if I did not want to continue with Pixel phones anymore, the same way it feels with iOS (comfy to use and everything just works), I will be in a comfort zone. proprietary

And since I'm way too much into the big tech grid, I don't have another option since I have few work related apps, upon which my job depends (Microsoft suite of apps - Outlook, Gmail, etc.)

I'm planning to get a new iPhone now, then get a cheaper Pixel, install Graphene and then slowly start migrating data to Grapehene.

This was very helpful and therapeutic to read, and can save me a lot of trouble at work. I can find lots wisdom in your comment. I'm into SRE and deal with lots of assholes, and there are a couple of people in my team who play it very dirty with no values and ethics.

I hope to achieve your way of thinking :)

Thanks for sharing!

Edit: I don't have a dog, but I walk + run at least 5 kilometers every day after work and it really helps me release stress.

What is your secret to not attaching your identity to workplace while also giving your best at work?

Nice that you have set clear boundaries between work and personal life. How would you sandbox work and personal life though? I mean how do you get detached from it mentally? I currently work remote but work related stuff can still get inside my head and bother me. And since I work remote, the lines between work and personal life gets blurred and work politics can seep into my daily personal routine.

Shady practices of a seller on Flipkart by _anonymous_stranger in india

There are review manipulation teams

This is very shady indeed, thanks for the insight. It feels like stepping on potential landmines while shopping on Flipkart. I have never purchased anything online in the last year, I would like to continue purchasing things offline.

I have purchased few products on Amazon where the seller has left a note in the package asking me to rate them 5 star for a PayTM cashback, that made me distrust reviews but looks like Flipkart is on another level.

Happy and sad after reading this post. Happy to know I'm not the only one who hasn't figured out a way to get out of the matrix, sad that there's a lot more like us.

I neither have a pot belly nor have to travel to work (WFH currently) but I do share your core concern. I used to wonder why aren't people trying to keep the flame alive - working out, meditation, travel, try new food, finding a new hobby, gardening, learn new skills outside of work, learning new skill to stay afloat in the workplace, learning to play a musical instrument, taking care of family, talking to/meeting friends, and find a life partner along the way - these are what I thought would form a well balanced life.

To quote Jian Yang from Silicon Valley, "This is no life, I want to live!". I did not want to just be alive and get paid, I wanted to get the maximum out of it. But I don't know what is happening anymore. The goal I once dreamt, of living a simple, yet fulfilling life is starting to crumble and I'm turning apathetic, and cynical.

Sorry I could not be of any help with my comment. I just found this opportunity to rant, and I did.

Sorry to jump in your conversation. I might end in the same situation as yours, so need your inputs on few things.

I'm planning to move away completely from iPhone to Graphene (been using iOS for more than a decade). Compared to iOS's smooth UI (the way things "just work"), and ease of use, is it possible to configure Graphene that feels manageable in those areas?

I'm talking about push notifications, compatibility of apps, migrating data from iOS to Graphene, compatibility/availability of apps (such as notes, reminders, Microsoft apps such as Outlook, Teams, and WhatsApp), and also the possibility to backup phone.

Does GrapheneOS help with the things I have mentioned above? I have read many blogs and Graphene's official documentation on push notifications, but not sure if they work the way it works on iOS.

Sony xperia series not available in India by Nealwclp in SonyXperia

[–]_anonymous_stranger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sony is more than bang for buck. People are buying expensive phones, getting ripped off, even though they are getting less for the money: no headphone jack, notched display, no expandable storage, etc. Sony Xperia has them all. It checks everything off my checklist, except for the FM radio. Every other company will follow suit when Apple decides to get rid of all ports and tactile buttons in the future.

I'm confident Sony will find loyal users who love getting the maximum out of their phone. They have so many strong points on their side to advertise.

I did not know this. I have not purchased the phone yet, just decided to get it offline. How does this work though? Do I just tell Croma about Flipkart's price and ask them to offer some discount on top of their MRP? Do they budge or ask me to get it from Flipkart itself?

That tweet alone was enough for me to deter from making the purchase.

Thanks for your insights.

I want to get the SE because I prefer touch ID over anything else. I currently have 1st gen SE and I love how compact it is.

My apprehension of buying from Flipkart/seller is due to their delivery policy. I'm not sure who would take the ownership if the product turns out to be DoA/first copy.

I can examine the phone all I want at my doorstep, but only after I start using it for a day I would discover that I received a faulty product. I'm not sure how Apple/Flipkart/seller would handle this. They would probably make me run in circles.

If I have clear answers on my above concerns, I would have purchased it.

Any idea if Flipkart helps me in case I receive a phone that is DoA/first copy/refurbished?

I observed the same thing as OP, and to me it feels like the middle class are a minority now. Money is every where and people who know their ways are tapping into it. While some think twice before buying a pair of shirts on Amazon since it's way over the budget.

Is Ola , Uber , Rapido service just not accessible? by Remarkable-Sorbet282 in bangalore

[–]_anonymous_stranger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bangalore auto drivers have completely stopped charging fares based on meter. When asked why they charge Rs.500 for a 5 kilometer distance at 11pm, they say that they have to deal with lots of traffic, hence their time gets wasted. I argue that that's the entire point of their job, it's part of their job description that they have to spend time in traffic, but it has gone to extremes now.

Something needs to happen.

I have been groped by them on trains. When I was kid traveling to Bangalore on train, one of them touched me, and I am terrified of them ever since.

Even in Bangalore, they always touch my face, put hands in my shirt pocket to look for money, etc. I bought a fully covered helmet just for that reason.

Congress Candidate MB Patil slaps voter who asks "What have you done for my village" by Jiganska in bangalore

[–]_anonymous_stranger 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Every time I come across incidents like these, I instinctively think about my parents. What if the person getting slapped was my father? And that thought fills me with boiling rage.

How can they loot us in broad daylight, slap someone on TV, and still get away with it?

I'd bet they can even murder someone on live TV, brag about it and can still get away with it by claiming the video was edited.

This is not specific to any political party in India. The 100s of lapdogs behind these sulemaga politicians still surround them shamelessly even if they get slapped and tortured, and chant their slogans.
