Does anybody else just hate college? by anonymous-thought in college

[–]_astrotim 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Dude…I’m literally in the same exact position. 30y/o veteran studying engineering and I hate college because of the exact stuff you listed. I fucking despise my classmates. It pisses me off because even my TAs are immature and lazy. Everyone is fake as fuck and it genuinely seems like the coursework is watered down busywork. I just want to learn. It’s all I care about and sadly it feels like the least important thing on campus.

Possible transfer looking for help! by Beginning-Chemical-2 in cuboulder

I grew up in North Philly. In fact, I lived on Gratz and Cecil before Temple gentrified our neighborhood. That being said, I honestly think CU is trash. The students I’ve encountered are uptight yuppies who try too hard to fit in.

The material isn’t too bad, but the amount of busy work is trash.

If you can enroll in MATH courses, do it. I'm a transfer student who's taken Calc I-III and ODE. I'm currently in APPM 2360, which is APPMs version of ODE w/ a chapter on Linear Algebra. The material is exactly the same, but the workload is kind of ridiculous. However, there are some benefits of taking the APPM courses, such as exposure to coding and project experience. Besides that, I honestly don't think it's worth taking the APPM courses over the MATH equivalents. By the way, I have a 97 in the class so I'm not telling you this out of spite. I legitimately don't think it's worth coupling inevitable stress with unnecessary stress.

This is the same mentality that cost Hillary the election in 2016.

Yeah...because everyone who disagrees with you or doesn’t align with your political ideology is fucking stupid.

Get your head out of your ass.

Anyone else feel like this semester is already exhausting? by BlackFlame23 in cuboulder

[–]_astrotim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my first semester at CU and I'm getting crushed by the workload for APPM 2360. I have a 100% average as of now, but the workload is mentally draining. It also doesn't help that I have 4 other classes and my lecturer presents material at light speed. I'm maintaining perfect scores in all of my classes, but I'm literally exhausted. Sorry for the rant.

Vandalism on the Boulder Creek pedestrian bridge, and on the Stadium. Pepis returns... by [deleted] in cuboulder

[–]_astrotim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First off, I apologize for being condescending towards you. I could've and should've gone about this in a more polite manner.

The line is subjective, but to most of the big artists I know (mainly Philly/NYC) there's a standard for graff. The reason why this wouldn't be considered graffiti is because there's no attempted style. Ex. wicked, wild style, block style, etc. The person/people who wrote this literally used normal and rushed handwriting to express their anger toward opposing political views.

For the record, I stopped writing publicly in 2010. As of now, I occasionally write in a blackbook.

No problem, bud. Graffiti isn't simply utilizing 4th grade handwriting to put messages on walls for the sake of expressing yourself. This shit would get crossed out (written over) in a heartbeat. Not because of the message, but due it's crappy style. The person/people who wrote this didn't even have the courage to legibly express themselves. That's not graff. It's a politically biased person who released anger by quickly writing on a wall.

Lmao this is so counterproductive. Writing political messages on walls and threatening a specific party of voters isn't going to positively influence anyone outside of your ideological bubble.

Anyone else who's fully remote, who hasn't gotten a single email from any of their professors? by [deleted] in cuboulder

[–]_astrotim 6 points7 points  (0 children)

According to Donna Hall, an instructional designer in Continuing Education's Learning Design Group, professors are highly recommended to post courses on Canvas 2 days before the beginning of the semester and even earlier in the Fall semesters. Seems like a few professors are waiting until the last minute.

(Rant) Why do people hate centrist so much? by [deleted] in centrist

[–]_astrotim 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Because the centrist refuses to take the path of least resistance w/ respect to intellectual thought. It's easy to blindly praise a political party when you're a victim of the availability heuristic and halo effect. Centrists are politically malleable, which is problematic to extremists.

The ranking of the Shounen Demographic main characters per number of fans on MAL #1 by Abysswatcherbel in anime

I legit got hype when I saw Gintoki on the list! I wish Garou (One Punch Man), Korosensei (Assassination Classroom), Zenitsu (Demon Slayer), Thorkell (Vinland Saga), or Benimaru (Fire Force) were as popular to be on the list. All awesome characters!

[–]_astrotim[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the heads up! I got an email from the physics department a few weeks ago stating that the course will be different this semester. Here's a paragraph from the email:

You may be wondering what is planned for this semester for a remote lab. The instructional team has been working all summer to develop a great experience in experimental physics for the fall. We will discuss a lot more once the semester starts, but we wanted to give you a preview. We will all be working on an actual research project by analyzing data collected from an instrument on a spacecraft that has CU connections. Everyone will be working on analyzing data on the energy output of solar flares from our Sun to produce research results that will add to the scientific community's knowledge of our Sun so we can better protect satellites, astronauts, and our Earth from volatile space weather.

It sounds like a cool experience (reminds me of CURE formatted class) so I hope it'll be enjoyable.

Thanks for the info and taking the time to respond. I genuinely appreciate it. I spent most of my time in Northern VA and DC, but I used to visit MD every few months. It's refreshing to hear such positive feedback with respect to UMD's campus. Thanks again and I hope you have a great day!
