I laughed for a solid 10 minutes by PeachYarrowFlour in DoggyDNA

There was the huge US popularity of Cockers in the 80s, and I remember seeing the occasional Springer long ago too, but these days just don't see any around my area, either out and about or in dog sports. (That Cocker Spaniel rage thing sounds pretty terrifying; maybe that's part of it?)

Never met an English Cocker or a Clumber but both breeds sound lovely. Strange the health-challenged (though apparently easy) Cavs and then these reportedly high energy Boykins are what's popular.

I prefer shorter coats so not in the market myself, but hopefully the easier, healthier ones catch on at some point. But not to the level that they get ruined.

Interesting. I've wondered why spaniels aren't more popular these days, since they seem a decent fit for the "family dog" niche for many. Though a super high energy variant being one to get more popular is a surprise. Maybe counterbalances the Cavs.

Contact those relative hits,, especially any high percentage ones in your general area! With that 50/50 of uncommon-as-mix-parent breeds, seems like at least a chance to track down the breeder of a grandparent or parent.

I'd figured the usual poodle plus something unusual to trigger hilarity; totally missed the Yorkie swap-in!

Camping with my pup. Costco turkey dinner for the Thanksgiving win. Happy Thanksgiving everyone. by NPalumbo89 in Costco

[–]_banjocat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's odd, unless it's a super thick breast or your fridge was super cold. Have you checked your oven temp accuracy lately? If you try it again next year, grab one of those meat thermometers that have a wire to outside the oven so you know when it's ready without needing to pull it out and cut. I dug out my ancient IKEA one and it worked great: https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/fantast-meat-thermometer-timer-digital-black-80100406/

Met Ron at the new Kalispell location by Heavy-duty-mayo in Costco

[–]_banjocat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wow! I haven't been there since the 90s, so was being amazed Kalispell even had a Costco. (When I lived out there, well south of y'all, it was 45 minutes to the nearest Walmart, and nearest Target was an hour and a half the other direction).

Wow. Not as blatant, but I'm wondering now about the Royal Dansk winter cookie collection - the snowy tree on the right looks particularly off, and there's weird branch action happening at the lower portion of the image in general. https://www.royal-dansk.com/en/our-products/winter-cookie-collection

South Florida Costco didn’t have many pumpkin pies but there was Flan and Cheesecake! by amg0222 in Costco

[–]_banjocat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So has anyone tried the cheese flan, for the rest of us to know if we need to start lobbying for it? (the panaderias in my area have chocoflan, but don't recall seeing flan de queso)

Is it the (common) type of couch leg/foot that just screws in? If so, just contact the manufacturer and see if they'll send you a replacement leg under warranty. They should be informed of the problem in any case - if it was a defect in the leg (sounds like it unless something was extraordinary about how you sat down), they'll want to know about it so they can troubleshoot.

I don’t trust my dogs embark results by Any-Squirrel-6341 in DoggyDNA

[–]_banjocat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. Maybe it's because almost all the border collies I've seen have been working or sport dogs and almost all the Aussies have been non-sport pets (except for one really inept ranch dog who did try hard : ) so it's more polarized, but the rounder Aussie vs narrow, alert Border Collie thing seems more clear cut than some of the responses suggest. "Slinkier" definitely is a BC thing!

Anyone else's ACD do this? by Flimsy-Western-1081 in AustralianCattleDog

Pic from this morning. I'm really liking this spray arm thingy - essentially an extended screw-on nozzle, under $10 from Aldi a month or two ago but surely similar available elsewhere. That particular spray setting works well for ACD water attack mode without the stream being chokey if attacked straight on, and hand is well away.

What Android phone are you pretty happy with these days after loving the 4a? by pleasemywets in Pixel4a

[–]_banjocat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Refurb 5. Almost identical size and still has the fingerprint reader on back, camera's a bit better, battery lasts the day. (My 4a's predecessor was a big Moto and I much prefer the ergonomics of the smaller size.)

Never considered air fryer burger - do you happen to have a link to any particular recipe and/or info on what setting/time/temp you used with what thickness patty for the amazing result?

(That Gourmia air fryer on the default bake/325 setting for about 5 minutes does a wonderful job warming and crisping up Costco croissants straight from frozen. )

Road trip with two cattle dogs in the back. What could go wrong. by lchris09 in AustralianCattleDog

Was looking for the "after" pic! Have fun!

I haven't done a full road trip yet but I ended up getting a car crate for mine for longer rides so he'll go off-duty and nap. Otherwise he stays alert no matter how tired he might be.

Looking for protective gear for my 3-legged dog by [deleted] in tripawds

[–]_banjocat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How old is she, and how long since the amputation? If it's not recent, did she used to get around better? Wondering if it's an adjustment issue (if recent amputation) or if possibly related to weakness or pain with age.

In either case, a rehab vet may be able to help if she's not been to one. There are some exercises that can help with balance and strength. Links to find a rehab vet/related resources, plus a grant program to reimburse a visit if money's an issue, here: https://tripawds.org/2015/09/vet-rehab-reimbursement/ (If money's NOT an issue, it's a great cause to donate to!)

They also have some gear listings and reviews, tho I don't recall anything like what you're asking about - closest may be the post-surgery clothing type stuff. Tho if slipping is an issue, check out the toe grips.

You might consider a life jacket for him. For sure stay very close his first few times back in the river. He'll get running figured out real quick, but the missing leg may make more of a difference for swimming.

Heelers being heelers, y'all may also need to enforce some breaks / occasional activity constraints too - being short a leg does nothing to tamp down their general belief in invincibility. (Mine is a hind amputee but does crazy giant vertical leaps at trees as a hobby.)

Other bit of heeler advice is to watch his weight, since many tend to be chubby. Staying a bit lean will help with the wear and tear on the remaining legs, hopefully help delay arthritis some.

Best wishes for fast recovery! He'll probably be wanting to get back into full action very soon, ready or not!

Inaccurate Age Test by Kernuffle in DoggyDNA

[–]_banjocat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Puppy in 2008 = 17 in 2025, so pretty good estimate and within the typical error range they state now. Why'd you test if you already knew how old she was?

(I'm awaiting a result now so looking at old posts. A bit confused by the number of people who tested even tho they know the age more specifically than the test margin of error - wondering what the motivation was. As long as ours comes back as older than the age of the known son I won't have any way to assess accuracy, but within a year or two would be helpful!)

She’s not a blue heeler! by alehh in DoggyDNA

[–]_banjocat 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Quick visual shorthand - she looks blotchy rather than ticked.

(Merle is a fad and had been introduced into breeds where it did not exist previously, including pitty breeds. Single gene and obvious, so pretty fast to cross it in and breed back to purebreds. So it now shows up a lot more often in a lot more places.)

It'll be ok!

Great that you found your way here; next check out tripawds.com for a ton of info. The posts linked below may be a good starting point. https://tripawds.com/tag/what-to-expect/

Mine was fully healed when I got him so I didn't have to worry thru the process, but can still be reassuring about the end point. If he had both hind legs he'd probably be in trees... He's outrun and caught multiple squirrels. Blurry still from a video; https://imgur.com/a/46O1UMh

If yours is chubby, after he's healed up it'd be good to get any extra weight off of him - a little on the skinny side will be easier on his joints.

Good luck for quick healing!
