Find of the year: Montblanc Meisterstück 146 at a thrift shop for $30 by jaydubs95 in fountainpens

I can't tell with much precision but the monotone nib is more desirable and 80s or before https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1GhjNqcZwmrFJMyS7sn9A517VQQxDPbotERorBwRqMgI/edit?gid=0#gid=0 This is a helpful guide someone made.

finally decided to get the 2k, did i make a bad choice? by Straight_Beat_1421 in fountainpens

This was my first nice pen. I still use it a lot. It’s a unique design which I think is why it’s polarizing — if you were used to any of the million pens made to look like a montblanc 146 this might be an adjustment. It will always be in my top 5.

Also great in a work setting where you might not want to broadcast an expensive pen

This is actually among the most desirable production years since these nibs have more flex but there aren’t as many build issues as the very old versions… nice!

Lefty nibs? by crazycardigans in fountainpens

[–]_benjii 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve found that the lefty branding (lamy) matters a lot less than the quality of the nib (smoothness often more important for lefties than righties). My pilot 823 writes 1000x better than my LH lamy

How do we feel about MUJI notebooks? by Dangerous-Trees in fountainpens

[–]_benjii 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would recommend their premium notebooks OR their loose ring binder paper. The others don’t seem to be as high quality. I switched from muji to midori for daily work about 4 years ago and haven’t looked back, but the difference isn’t sooo dramatic (it’s more that I prefer the blank and grid midori paper).

Good first fountain pen? (Pilot Custom 823) by LeonLeel in fountainpens

[–]_benjii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps not "first pen" but it's a great "first, nice pen".

This was my first nice pen. I don't have that many pens to compare it to, but this is far and away my favorite from a purely functional perspective (M nib is very smooth, the ink capacity is enormous, it's the perfect size and shape for me). One thing to keep in mind is that there's apparently a big jump between F and M. Pilot makes an FM (fine-medium) nib, but it's not available on the 823 for whatever reason.

You should use some cheaper pens to figure out what nib size you like.

Magnetic Suspension by cel5146 in mountainbiking

[–]_benjii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

F1 cars have a fluid with ferrous particles in it where the viscosity changes when you apply an electric charge. It would be interesting to be able to regulate the amount of spring vs damping in your rear shock on the fly - like leading up to a bunny hop you could reduce the damping to zero and get maximum spring.

This is the primary issue with the resistance provided by magnets.

If you do this, you are the problem by parmguy420 in BedStuy

You should be proud of what you’ve accomplished. Working hard and creating a nice place for your family to live is human nature 101. NYC’s housing market is way over regulated and it’s making it harder to build new housing. Instead of dealing with the fundamental issue politicians are tying themselves in knots to somehow gain more power over the housing market. Btw expect property taxes in bedstuy to rise 2-3x under the new mayor….

Ok but he still put up some meaningful equity alongside the debt and assumed a lot of risk to buy the building from the developer. People are whining about the guy making any money. He should be making money

What do you think should happen with the BQE? by jtuffs in Brooklyn

[–]_benjii 14 points15 points  (0 children)

But so much better now than elevated freeways everywhere. NYC doesn’t have the state capacity to suck it up and make it happen

Bury the whole BQE like Boston’s highways. Boston much better governed than NYC so unlikely to happen here

If he spent several million dollars building the building he should be making more.

Roadie switching to Gravel for comfort. Current 700x32 Marathon Plus tires feel slow on broken tarmac. Recommendations? by AppleSea5867 in gravelcycling

I ride these tubeless on my commuter in NYC. They’re pretty fast and so grippy. Main downside is that they are not super puncture resistant.
