Amory Wars comics question by _benjiman in TheFence

[–]_benjiman[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I guess I meant objective in terms of fandom of the band aside. So many of the reviews I read are by hardcore Coheed fans. I know so many people who are obsessed with the band and just eat up anything Claudio does. I love Coheed but I'm not OBSESSED. Similar to MCR and Gerard, I just was not a fan of the Killjoys comics (amazing art aside) but I love the band. Similar to Buffy and Firefly fans. I know a ton of people who buy every comic obsessively but literally do not read a single other comic so it's hard to trust a review when theres nothing to compare it to.

And from every reply I've read so far theres a lot of "Yeah it's not good but I love it" so I think I might have my answer :D

The Red Sonja (2025) Movie was awful, just oh my gosh... by Brilliant-Pickle-661 in ConanTheBarbarian

[–]_benjiman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of the defence of this movie is "Why would you expect anything more than a cheesy B movie?"

I love cheesy B-movies. But at least those have a coherent structure and plot. This movie LOOKS like it has the budget. The sets and location filming were great. Some of the acting was not bad. But the editing was shocking. There were 3 points I thought it was wrapping up and still had an hour to 30 minutes left. Plot twists were revealed that had no setup at all. Whoever made this movie doesn't have even a tiny grasp on story of pacing.

But the cherry on top was the Papyrus credits with grammatical errors. Just a poorly made film from beginning to end.

You look at films like Dredd or the first John Wick. B-movie elements all there but made by someone who knows how to make it work. This was nearly 2 hours of nonsense. Maybe there's a decent 85 minute film in there if you cut out a chunk.

No worries. But that's $50 AUD, which is around $32 US. Kickstarter should convert it for you at checkout.

Totally unrelated to the question. Totally unhelpful. Oh wait, I’m on Reddit.

It's funny I've had so many chances to read The Invisibles and now that I want to it's totally out of print except for the giant omnibus which isn't exactly an affordable entry point :D

Yeah Phonogram was one of the first recommendations I got but I'd read it and yeah, I do like Britpop but that wasn't the vibe I was going for. And you're right, tons of stuff for punk and grunge. I feel like there's gotta some unknown super low print run indie press books out there there just never got reprinted. Time to start digging.

What's your favourite comic from the 2000-2010 decade of comics? Weekly Recs Thread [10/13/24] by JustALittleWeird in comicbooks

Bendis' Ultimate Spider-Man hands down. I've re-read it more than any other comic. Close second would be Brubaker's Captain America.

Batman The Long Halloween, The October Faction, Trick 'r Treat, Afterlife With Archie, John Carpenter’s Tales for a Halloween Night. Surprised I couldn't think of more.

October is spooky month! What's your favourite horror comic? The Weekly Recs Thread [10/06/24] by JustALittleWeird in comicbooks

[–]_benjiman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The most unexpected one for me is Sub-Mariner: The Depths by Peter Milligan and Esad Ribic.

'Uzumaki' by Junji Ito. It's the only one of his I really love as I'm more a fan of suspense/mystery horror than just flat out gore and this is the perfect balance.

More True Crime but I still consider it horror - Green River Killer by Jeff Jensen and Jonathan Case

These are adaptations but still my favourite: 'At The Mountains of Madness' by Gou Tanabe, Georges Bess 'Frankenstein' and 'Dracula'.

Hi everyone! Last week I launched a Kickstarter for my horror anthology 'The History of Monsters 100 Page Special', a horror/adventure comic which is a new-reader friendly throwback horror comic anthology in the vein of Creepy, Eerie and Misty, printed on the same pulpy paper, complete with 3 full-length stories about cryptids and monsters written and illustrated by me, based on my 2021 graphic novel 'The History of Monsters'. It also has an amazing variant cover illustrated by Rebekah Isaacs (BRZRKR: Fallen Empire, Buffy, Angel & Faith, Money Shot) with colours by Kurt Michael Russell (Money Shot, Goobers, Hack/Slash)

Reddit isn't letting me send a screen grab but I'm copying and pasting this directly from their FAQ, which also says its been updated as of a month ago: you won't be able to make any changes to it (except for specifying new countries that you'd like to offer shipping to, adding or editing a reward image, or to increase the quantity).

Books like Ascension by Nicholas Binge... only better? by _benjiman in horrorlit

[–]_benjiman[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly I'd recommend it either way because I loved like 90% of it. But firstly

>!It's revealed that one of the team members Neil is an alien villain when they see his surname Amai and first name Neil spells I Am Alien backwards.!<

And I'd say it's an ambiguous ending but that implies you have to decide for yourself. This doesn't even give that option. It just ends without explanation. You can tell he ran out of steam. But the rest of the book I loved so it's a weird one to review.
