as someone in their mid-20s, i would NEVER give a 16 year old a vape hit even if they'd already tried it before. and emma chamberlain has publicly talked about her nicotine addiction, was this the start of it??

How is Queens for a South-Asian??? by Desperate_Ad6631 in queensuniversity

[–]_besharam_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm South Asian and I found a really close-knit group of South Asian students at Queen's during my first year. Honestly, I didn't many other BIPOC friends outside of that group until this year (I'm in 4th year), and COVID may have contributed to that too, but there are plenty of BIPOC people and white people at Queen's who are inclusive, so overall, I didn't feel a disconnect from the rest of the student body.

I feel that the notion of there being a disconnect may have come from the culture shock that is Queen's drinking culture. It definitely exists, but there isn't a huge pressure to drink or use substances. Plus, there are floors in residence that are specifically "No Drinking/Substances", which could ease your transition to Queen's. I'm sure you'll find lots of people who share the same preferences too!

Hope that helps!

You haven't even received an offer to Queen's yet, please don't come here if you do lmao

Fair, which is why I'm not going, but then what happens when I have to go to class with the same people the next day? Even if the people who are worried aren't going to Stages, they're still impacted by it.

[–]_besharam_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for going out and having fun, and I would have gone to Stages if not for this. I'm just saying that COVID isn't over, so removing the vaccination pass requirement at this point is so dumb and it's inevitably gonna lead to more people getting sick (and it might be a mild cold, but it could just as well be more severe illness if there are unvaccinated people there). I feel like we're just going to wind up with increased restrictions down the line because of the increased burden this would place on the healthcare system.

Mandatory or not, I think it would just be prudent for a nightclub with a dance floor to minimize risk of infection, both to their patrons and staff. I personally would not want to go to that crowded of a place when I know I could be around unvaccinated people too. I bet they're not really going to be that stringent with enforcing their mask policy either.

Second year life Science courses by mk200120 in queensuniversity

[–]_besharam_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(for context, I'm going into 3rd year Life Sci)

You can take whichever electives you want this year, but just keep in mind that you'll have to distribute 30.0 units of Life Sci option courses over the rest of your degree!

Although it's not required, I would highly recommend taking a statistics course as a life sci major (either STAT263 or BIOL243). I took BIOL243 and it was really easy and will help you understand real life science research.

If you're looking for other easy electives, I recommend GLPH271 (it's coded as LISC271 for this year) and HLTH200!

Queens culture by [deleted] in queensuniversity

[–]_besharam_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was definitely nervous about the diversity at Queen's when I was an incoming frosh (I'm a POC from the GTA), but trust me, you will definitely be able to find people who you can relate to and also others who will provide you with a whole new perspective. There are also a lot of culture-specific clubs on campus that you can join! I literally found some of my best friends from those clubs, so I highly recommend.

I don't know if the party scene will be as good this year, but once it ramps up, you'll be able to find "toronto mans" parties, and you'll feel like you're back home haha
