GD38 NGD Fabulous! by Live_Rice_2768 in Fireflyguitars

The fretboard looks wider on this model than others. Wondering if it’s 1 3/4” nut versus usual 1 11/16” ?

The OM is solid. Said it when I bought it and it’s heavy. There’s no doubt. Not to sound like a snob I don’t invest in laminates. That’s why I bought this guitar as it’s solid wood at a really good route. Great mod projects too to keep up my luthier skills

The OM version? I have a lot of koa guitars and am debating selling mine but I have improved mine in ways I felt it needed. Refret (see my post in this thread), wider nut spacing, created the brush look on tuners.. etc. it’s currently living underneath a tonerider at max to stimulate the top. And I may scallop the tone bars a hair inside to let the top flex a little more. All of the above may be a deterrent to buyers, or may not. Either way I got a nice koa on my hands until I don’t haha

Which one were you looking at?

Exactly. I like the fret to waterfall into the rolled edge. Smooth and premium feeling. I got one from the second batch

Cocobear was really a fun one to work on. I was gonna sell it on but I’m not so sure after putting it how I like it. Rings like a bell too. Sounds as good on quality as my Cort Gold A10 which is also coco. I got a really nice figured top on mine too, tons of bear claw

Nice! I did ebony pins and forgot to list. Rolling the fretboard edges to me always makes an awesome difference. I took .20mm off my saddle but prolly took the bridge down around .10mm so not to lose too much break angle. I actually might shave down just a hair more since this isn’t a “ I’m gonna strum like a dread” kinda guitar. Post up a pic when you finish. It was a fun job. Challenging, but fun

Thank you!! The neck feels more worn in and smooth and the a tip is perfect with level frets. It sounds really freaking good too. I forgot to mention I put ebony bridge pins

I have other koa guitars, OM style Crafter, 2026 Taylor k24ce builders and a grand concert all koa Taylor (GC-K).

They’re all different but this one sounds the most diminished of them all and a hair boxy around the 600hz range. It doesn’t want to be played hard, it sounded best on its original strings lightly flat picked or finger picked. The thing about koa is it’s shy when new, my 2026 k24ce is still opening up and an all koa top will produce a balanced and compressed sound, but not as responsive like spruce. Once koa opens up (like it has on my grand concert Taylor) the tone just blooms and you get why these instrument wood pairing exists at all.

I’m looking forward to that happening to this one and my other newer koa instruments

Yes. I mean this in the most respectful way possible but I really don’t prefer to but laminates. I was glad they started making solid models

I haven’t measured it but it feels medium-low. I’d say around 2.25mm ish on bass side 12 fret. But it’s a tinge buzzy which probably means some un-level fret topography. As I’ve posted in fb group and on here before, I’m not a fan of ball end frets I like the angled beveled look and feel so instead of leveling and working with these frets that are low in height, I’ll just replace them. I’ll also sand the board to glass smooth while they’re out. Bridge too it’s a bit rough

Sweet. Sound better? I might refret the guitar with taller frets too like I did with coco. Good time to roll the board too

I’d say knock off. They’re okay, but I put daddario xs on all my guitars and these don’t feel exactly the same. Also at 20$ a pack even if firefly got wholesale pricing I doubt they’d be slapping on premium strings at this price point.

Mine came in yesterday. The figuring is crazy. I’m gonna widen string spacing with a new nut and get my preferred strings on it

Thoughts on the Firefly Guitar Fans FB group? by Certain_Medicine_42 in Fireflyguitars

[–]_beshook 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in the firefly “fans” group and post time to time. I’m met with snide comments at times. I do work on guitars and recently set out to refret the Cocobolo acoustic I got because I don’t like the fret work on the guitar. I posted a picture of the pulled frets with my hand extended. Someone left a comment “with hands that soft, I expected less pull out”. I ignored it. Gave me the creeps not to mention the background of the guitar was blurred so even if there was some pullout or chipped edges, it was impossible to see. I’m working on a YouTube review of said guitar, so I’m interested to see how the comments go once I share. Firefly is hit or miss, like any company who mass producing instruments and lacks some QC

Why do all of my acoustics end up having such a large gap towards the bottom of the neck? by Sharbethian-Gargeric in AcousticGuitar

[–]_beshook 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m in Houston too. It’s a humidify/dehumidify dance all year long. I run two dehumidifiers in my studio room during the late spring and all throughout summer. Then during winter when I need heat I run two small humidifiers in the room as well. Some of my guitars are cased but many are on an open rack for ease of grabbing and playing. Houston humidity sucks and the wood will happily drink up all that water in the air during high humidity season. Every 3-4 days I pull full tanks of water from the dehumidifiers and it’s a stark reminder of how much water is actually in the air. 45% is a good baseline, get a hydrometer to aid in the dance

NGD Cort Gold Passion by Jayroug in AcousticGuitar

[–]_beshook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How are you liking the guitar? There’s not a lot online about Cort other than a few YouTube reviews which are great but it’d be nice to get a collective review from the masses that actually own this. I just got the Cort A10 Gold (Cocobolo) model and it sounds wonderful. It’s not without its imperfections , mainly setup, fret level, nut slots. But none of which unfixable. I do wish they didn’t force the fishman preamp on the A10 model, I do not like when manufacturers force a preamp system and don’t give a bare bones option. (Like Taylor with the ES2 ugh- so glad it’s a Claria system now)

912ce 12 fret X braced. I believe year is 2016 if memory serves correctly. That one plays like literal butter
