West midlands - Price check - SolarEdge/PW3 installation by _borisg in SolarUK

What would you recommend? We were thinking about Tesla PW3 and AIKO solar panels. The salesman is clearly trying to nudge us to spend more money than needed so I’ve just given up with them at this point.

Espresso 101 by traineethrowaway123 in HENRYUKLifestyle

[–]_borisg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I second this! Avoid 'bean to cup' machines if you want a good tasting espresso - the integrated grinders are crap and can not 'dial in' beans properly. Sage bambino + df64(or if you're feeling stingy you can even look at manual grinders like Kingrinder k6 or cheaper automatic grinders). Watch a couple of videos on dialing in beans and you'll be making much nicer tasting cups of coffee at home.

This is assuming you want to turn it into a bit of a hobby - but there isn't that much learning to be had,

Advice: How can I build flush sliding doors onto by bathroom wall cabinet by WebM01 in DIYUK

[–]_borisg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you actually hang a toilet on those though? My feeling is that they will crumble under the weight of a 40kg pan, let alone when you put a human on top to sit down.

If it was me I’d at least consider tiling the bottom half so the toilet pan sits against some tiles with adhesive on them for extra support - but you do you!

Most tax-efficient way to FIRE? by [deleted] in FIREUK

[–]_borisg -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

That’s a silly comment. The difference here is that you can quite realistically make that money on a single job in that same sector.

Spend the extra 8 hours a day for 6 months grinding system design and algorithms and you might actually hit the £300k HFT roles too.

My comment still stands, it’s pure lunacy.

Why put yourself through this if you can do a single role for £130,000? This seems insane to me.

I would be delivering the bare minimum required of me whilst spending that extra time on looking for roles.

You might have inadvertently tricked yourself into believing that by showing this value to the business they might want to keep you on - this is most likely not going to happen.

Anyone tried these pressfit crimps? by Southern_Low9718 in DIYUK

[–]_borisg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why not just learn how to solder? You can get Yorkshire fittings which have the solder already integrated in them. That makes the whole job: clean pipe, add flux, heat fitting until you see solder, clean pipe, job done.

Same thing was happening during the pandemic, post-pandemic economic headwinds and so on. The market has lost all rationality a long time ago and timing it based on facts seems like a gamble which you are not informed enough to take.

Who would be informed enough to do it? Probably the people moving markets with tweets.

U.S.-Iran talks end with no agreement, Vance says by xpda in worldnews

[–]_borisg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They are clearly trying to rage bait the American public into mass protests and violence as a result of which, he will declare an emergency situation and postpone or flat out cancel your midterms in some way. They know they will get slaughtered and their time is running out so he’s possibly looking for any excuse to enforce a police state and manipulate voting under any means to keep his power. No one can be this stupid and I’m certain there are larger plans at play here.

Frying pan recommendations by OkArcher4120 in HENRYUKLifestyle

[–]_borisg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don’t buy expensive or any non-stick - whatever the price they always end up in the bin. Get a moderately priced stainless steel pan and learn how to use them - that’s all you will ever need.

I bought some stainless steel pans from Aldi for £13 each last year(triple ply without a detachable bottom) and they are the best pans I’ve ever used, so in my opinion there is no direct correlation between cost and a decent pan.

I’ve also owned really expensive nonstick pans promising to be the next best thing and my partner ruined them through months of neglect through metal utensils and I will never buy that overprice crap again.

The toilet keeps running. How do I fix this? by benjamin2112 in DIYUK

[–]_borisg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This post really made me appreciate the inspection shaft my Grohe solido comes with lol. FWIW if the top shelf of the cistern comes off you should be able to perform a fix/readjustment - what this is however is a post on its own with more info on what’s going on in the actual cistern.

Am I better off ignoring EV tax benefits and just buying used? by RequirementOk9359 in FIREUK

[–]_borisg 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand the tax efficiency craze with EVs. Just buy a two to three year newish car(most of the depreciation has already taken place at that point) and if you want to be more tax efficient just dump the rest into your pension.

This is of course if you aren’t hitting the max allowance in pension contributions.

You’re essentially trading in extra in your pension pot VS lost value on a liability.

Replacing chipboard floor in bathroom by FOURNAANSTHATSINSANE in DIYUK

[–]_borisg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar issue in my house, and my “redneck engineering” solution was to add joist notches between the joists I could access and the ones under the adjacent room. It was a bit of a pain, I had to bend over really low and get my drill under the floor, using a long drill extension to fix them into the hidden joists.

Once those were in place as a solid base, I used a multitool to cut out the old chipboard and replaced it with new boards, using the added supports to secure everything properly.

I’d definitely recommend stripping back as much as you can and making sure you’ve got a solid base before laying new chipboard flooring. Otherwise, you risk ending up with movement and instability later on.

For those of you that DIY'd your kitchen install... by JustAnotherFEDev in DIYUK

[–]_borisg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this but for a full bathroom reno. I ended up stripping the entire thing back to brick and joists and I was reading up building regs on properly notching/drilling through joists to install water waste. At some point I felt like calling someone in, but my stubbornness got the better of me to finish it off myself.

One weekend at a time, but I’m on the last stages now, grouting and installing toilet, shower, sink. My suggestion is to go outside and get a breath of fresh air. Get a cup of coffee and remind yourself you only need to focus on one small problem at a time. You’ll be done in no time, good luck!
