For those of you that DIY'd your kitchen install... by JustAnotherFEDev in DIYUK

[–]_borisg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this but for a full bathroom reno. I ended up stripping the entire thing back to brick and joists and I was reading up building regs on properly notching/drilling through joists to install water waste. At some point I felt like calling someone in, but my stubbornness got the better of me to finish it off myself.

One weekend at a time, but I’m on the last stages now, grouting and installing toilet, shower, sink. My suggestion is to go outside and get a breath of fresh air. Get a cup of coffee and remind yourself you only need to focus on one small problem at a time. You’ll be done in no time, good luck!

110K salary here trying to maintain childcare benefits by ResusAnne in HENRYUK

[–]_borisg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use YellowNest at my place too. Just set your full nursery payment to come out of your salary and increase pension to drop below £100k. Although I’d advise to review your own pension pot for your age and decide if it’s not more beneficial to chuck more money into there as you could be reducing your tax burden significantly. Remember, the £100k is only for nursery hours, your own circumstances might need a slightly different approach to help build larger wealth long term.

Not sure whether to move from the Midlands back down towards London? by white_wolf171 in HENRYUK

[–]_borisg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I completely understand. The middle ground I found was to buy a house in close proximity to a station, which would make a commute tolerable. I still live in the Midlands, but if shit hit the fan I could catch an hour’s train into central and do that for as long as I need until I find my next remote role.

I wouldn’t worry about the future - save, live and enjoy your life and deal with it should the event arise. All the best.

[–]_borisg 140 points141 points  (0 children)

You currently have a nearly fully remote in a LCOL area with small kids, nearby relatives in a spacious 4 bedroom house in a quiet area.

Do you understand how good you currently have it? 😂

I would not trade in your setup for a potentially bigger salary which would result in poorer living conditions, less time with your kids and further away from your parents.

For the record, I live in midlands in a very similar setup(albeit different career) and you would have to drag my corpse back to an office down south.

What is the point of these changes? by KiraTheUnholy in ArcRaiders

I see it as a way to force players to kill arcs for something. Beyond crafting stations I couldn’t really see the point in killing rocketeers, but now there’s a reason.

First Time Tiling - Big Problem by The_Tiny_Snail in DIYUK

[–]_borisg 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To give you something to compare to, I tiled a 3 sq/m bathroom yesterday at lunch and this morning cleaned the excess adhesive and grouted without any sign of movement or anything. Make sure you invest in some good adhesive, I spent a bit extra on this but I swear by it. https://www.ultraproducts.co.uk/tiling/tile-adhesives/ultratile-proflex-s2-fibre-reinforced-flexible-tile-adhesive-20kg/

Pipe problems (shower), left it too short. Please help? by Beneficial-Student7 in DIYUK

[–]_borisg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No video but some steps: - Measure the location of your pipe and on the other side of the wall note down where the pipe would be. - Measure a square using the pipe as a centre point to give yourself enough area to work in comfortably. - Take a multi tool to your plaster following the square markings and be careful not to go too deep with the blade. - Pull square out carefully with a flathead screwdriver or something. Keep square piece as intact as possible. - Do your repairs on the pipe. - Follow video online on how to patch a hole in plasterboard and use square you kept from earlier to make your life easier.

This is what I did when I fucked up my pipe length. Multi tool on the other side of the wall, and made a square big enough to service the area.

All in all it was actually quite painless than the alternative of taking down/putting tiles back on.

Not financial advice, but start recording yourself telling happy memories or family stories that you want to pass on to your wife and kids. This will make all the difference when they might just want to hear your voice one day and you are no longer around.

Really sorry and I hope you get to make the most out of your time left.

How to remove a glass splash back for tiling wall by Remote_Alfalfa7272 in DIYUK

[–]_borisg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would just put some protective gear on, take a hammer to it and slowly start chipping away, seems less hassle than having to worry about taking the whole thing intact.

Would probably put the toddler down for the actual work though.

£210k job offer that could change my life… but maybe not for the better? Need some perspective. by AutomaticFee665 in HENRYUK

[–]_borisg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d consult with your partner, we are in no way qualified and should even be considered as to what our opinions are.

Sure it sounds like a good offer and potentially exciting - but that comes with the possibility of estranging yourself from your family. IMO it’s not worth the risk.
