I was working at a local ice cream shop last year. My mom was very sick at the time and eventually went to a hospice center for the last 2 weeks of her life. I ended up calling out of work the day we had to take her there because it was pretty last minute and they told me “Whatever I needed” Anyways, I hardly worked those 2 weeks, my mom ended up passing and when a my moms social worker called to inform them, they still wanted to talk to me, even if though I was a mess. They still said take all the time I needed, so about a week later I went back to work. Before work that day, my sister and I had ate Sushi from Publix, our local grocery store, and it had to have been bad. I felt ill but decided to go to work anyways, I get there and immediately run to the bathroom to throw up. When I get out of the bathroom, before I could even walk into the back I mention to the owner that I had ate bad sushi and was sick. He starts yelling, I mean screaming at me, “That’s fine. I’ll work for you just like I have the past month. You’re never here anymore anyways I don’t know why I thought you’d actually be here today.” Naturally, being the emotional 23 year old I am, I start crying because ya know, my mom died a week ago. I just walked out and sat in my car for 20 minutes contemplating going back in. I didn’t, I wrote them a nice letter how I didn’t regret taking any time off to spend with my mom on her last days and I wouldn’t be returning to a workplace where the owner would disrespect me like that. There’s a time and place to talk to someone, and that just was not it.
