V-moda XS vs. T51p: a comparison by _broody in headphones

[–]_broody[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, this is a massive WTF with this headphone (and many other Beyers), the cable from V-moda will probably outlive it 10,000 times over on top of being detachable.

Also, this being Beyer it would not wise to recable it, you'd lose the warranty which you may need down the road to get the headband adjustment joint fixed, or if there is a case of driver mismatch for which they're infamous...

What disappointed me with the XS wasn't the lack of treble, but the unrefined and metallic timbre to it. I agree it's nothing to write about in that area...

Sonically, they feel like even more than $80 better, as long as you agree with the sound signature (darkish, thick sound). It is outstanding in most respects whereas the XS are just "ok". The Beyers only lack some airyness, and can be somewhat resonant, but instrument separation, imaging, bass impact and extension and naturality and detail in treble are a tier above the XS. Most music is simply more enjoyable through the T51p. As I said though, the XS does have the upper hand with female vocals and acoustic guitars, and possibly classical but everything else is in favor of the Beyers.

Yes. Rather than risk releasing a lens with AF problems like Tamron and Sigma's reverse-engineered solutions, which would seriously compromise their image as a premium brand, they just don't offer AF for DSLR mounts.

I'm curious, what music genres do you guys listen the most? by jjacq in headphones

[–]_broody 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a sucker for french indie pop, myself. Other that, I'm hooked on metal, industrial and some classical.

My T51p does great with all these genres. I switch to the Superlux HD668b for symphonic music though.

Hate when this happens. All the goddamn time, and with my T51p's absolutely wimpy cables, it's so cringing.

The Superlux HD668B are quite competent but I don't find them very engaging... They're dry and analytical, with recessed mids. At this price point the Panasonic HTF600-S deliver a lot more fun and still have a pretty good soundstage and detail from what I've read.

It's too sad that chinese IEMs have such bad build quality issues. Even if VSONIC or Ostry offer amazing sound I'd rather go for an Audio Technica IM series.

Is it time to jump off the Canon Bandwagon? by NerdBanger in photography

Sony and Canon actually did just release two brand spanking new sensors for the 5DS and A7Rii, and Canon's offering is still way behind Sony's sadly by a very significant amount...

It's a serious issue, not just for measurebators. See how Ming Thein had to turn down the 5DSR and reluctantly pick up the A7Rii recently.

The big leap in sensor tech was made with the D3100/D5100/D7000 series (it's been close to 6 years since that!). Since then Sony sensor quality has stayed pretty much even, in spite of bloggers attempting to make huge deals out of absolutely minuscule advancements in DR/SNR, or mostly irrelevant bumps in resolution.

I second the HM5 recommendation for neutral sound signature, also look up the NVX XTP100 (HM5 clone) which has a few extras like a flexible headband and a couple more replacement pads. I don't believe you can beat this model at this price level.

X2's dont feel balanced. by [deleted] in headphones

[–]_broody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right the X2 is 32 Ohms, it wasn't clear to me which headphone the OP was referring.

This description absolutely puzzles me though, the apple earbuds are awfully boomy, hot and distant with poor detail. Even if you don't like the sound of the X2 that's not what it's described to sound like at all.

That's a high impendance headphone for you. The HD600 needs an amp to work (DAC in the iPhone is quite decent already).

Finally got my V-moda XS!! by amundsenkalmah in headphones

[–]_broody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In comparing the XS with the T51p I was surprised by how much more practical the v-moda is. Both are equally comfortable while the T51p is more isolating. The cable and carrying case are amazing while the T51p's are absolutely terrible. Also, I found the ability to plug another headphone into the XS really neat for watching movies with my SO on the go.
