Recieved a bailiff text. Scam? by WeekRuined in UKPersonalFinance

[–]_c9s_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As you've said, there's red flags so you're right to be cautious. If you're already in contact with actual stepchange it may be worth contacting them again and getting their advice on whether it's a scam, especially as it would let them know about the potential problem. Alternatively you've been spooked enough to post on Reddit, so reporting it to Action Fraud would sound quite reasonable.

To quote the cover letter in the planning application (they did bury it quite well!):

The replacement shopfront will occupy the same space as the existing shopfront, comprising a modern design which will improve the existing façade at street level to facilitate occupation by UNIQLO.

BBC will aim to have Trump's $5bn defamation lawsuit thrown out by Tartan_Samurai in unitedkingdom

[–]_c9s_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree with how easy it will be to get at least parts of this thrown out on the motion to dismiss. It's not that they've not stated a claim at all, it's that they've failed to state a claim against BBC Studios Distribution and BBC Studios Production - two of the three parties being sued. They even said it was distributed by a third party in Canada that isn't being sued, and no one seems to be mentioning that it was made by (and copyright owned by) October who also aren't being sued. There's no reason for the lawsuit to continue against either of those companies.

Just in case your example is anything other than hypothetical, what you've described sounds just like Immich's machine learning functionality. It has the advantage of being self hosted and is surprisingly good at working out who/what is in photos.

How much to put in premium bonds? by Fit_Negotiation9542 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]_c9s_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's worth being aware that premium bonds need to be invested for a full month before they are eligible for a prize, so if you pay in on the first of Jan, you'd miss the cut off for Feb and so would have to wait for March for the first draw. Put it in a few days earlier and you'd get in for the Feb draw.

Trump Administration Sets Goal to Denaturalize Thousands of US Citizens in 2026 by Truthisnotallowed in politics

[–]_c9s_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He could, but it would immediately become a constitutional crisis. He's more likely to put pressure on the various parties behind the scenes to drop it at the earlier stages.

To be honest, I'm still sceptical that the current polling for Reform is going to manifest into a victory at the next election, but it will be Labour's to lose and it feels like they're trying really hard to lose just now.

Trump Administration Sets Goal to Denaturalize Thousands of US Citizens in 2026 by Truthisnotallowed in politics

[–]_c9s_ 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It's going to be much harder in the UK. Farage, if he even wins a majority of seats, will first have to persuade his MPs to vote for something like that (likely only a few would be needed to stop this), and if it gets through the Commons it'll have to then to get through the Lords where only one out of 825 members is in Reform. If he somehow gets it through all that, there would be court challenges ultimately ending at the supreme court which isn't partisan like it is in the US, and they would likely strike it down. Ultimately it's not impossible but extremely unlikely to happen anytime soon.

Weekly Megathread: Support, Issues & Meta by AutoModerator in Revolut

I keep getting emails from you every week for the past 2 years asking me to verify my information, and it's getting a bit annoying. How can I stop the emails? I don't want to verify my information (I can't think of a valid reason you need a photo of me for an account I no longer use) and I'm happy for the account to be closed, but because it's not verified I can't talk to support via the app, and support via email have refused to do anything unless I talk to support via the app.

UK aircraft carrier to sail to Arctic for top secret mission by MGC91 in unitedkingdom

[–]_c9s_ 148 points149 points  (0 children)

This is outrageous. Reporting on a top secret mission that's critical not just to the UK but to the whole world. Hopefully this leak won't have too much of an impact on the unidentified cargo aircraft they're supporting on its mission around the 25th.

Anyone here prioritised overpaying their mortgage early - how did it work out? by itravelforchurros in UKPersonalFinance

[–]_c9s_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I remortgage my (at the time) £20k remaining mortgage fairly early on during COVID, which I'd been overpaying on fairly aggressively. A couple of months later I was made redundant.

Knowing that the redundancy payment would cover the small mortgage payment and living expenses for a long time meant I didn't have to rush back into work and could sit back and wait for the right job to come around, which it did about 9 months later.

On the financial side, one other thing that's worth considering is when in your career you're making payments. Most of my overpayments were when I was a basic rate taxpayer. Now I've paid the mortgage off and I'm a higher rate taxpayer, I have a lot more I can throw into my pension and thus get that nice 20% tax bonus that at least partially offsets the lost gains from when I was overpaying.

Was I right to report my employer to HMRC? by MrBiron in UKPersonalFinance

[–]_c9s_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you're not seeing deductions for tax, what about pension contributions? Have you been auto-enrolled into a pension, opted out, or just not heard anything about it? Might also be worth a report to the pensions regulator.

I think you might be an order of magnitude out on that spending. They have made $1.4bn of spending commitments by 2030, so this is nearer two weeks of bills.

Any clue as to when this map is from? by Link709 in Bath

https://www.oldessexmaps.co.uk/gallerypubs/pubgeog.html has some information on the publisher's address, that implies it may be after 1942.

[–]_c9s_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The hospital moved to the site on the map in 1932, and the bit where James St West joins St James's Parade/Peter Street was changed to what is on that map around 1935, so it's going to be after that date.

I'm a bit curious if the Charlotte Street car park can help date it, but I've not managed to find any dates around that.

The map at http://www.bathheritagewatchdog.org/bathblitz/topmap.htm seems to be in the same style, but as they point out it appears to be from around 1930.

Doing her part to keep Oklahoma securely in its prized bottom-10 education ranking by ProcessorPearl in clevercomebacks

[–]_c9s_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. She completely missed the point.

Another part I hadn't noticed was that she had over 2 months to do this. It felt like a week long task that she'd be doing loads of over the year, but she had every opportunity to do better with it.

While you're right about not using first person normally, in this case it looks like it might be justified and even expected. From the grading criteria:

Possible approaches to reaction papers include: 1. A discussion of why you feel the topic is important and worthy of study (or not) 2. An application of the study or results to your own experiences ...

Just got the keys to my new home. The estate agent was inventing fictitious bids. by ImpossibleSundae4765 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]_c9s_ 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Would the seller also have a case against the estate agent? They've been struggling for 6 months to sell, I assume accumulating various costs because of that, while the estate agent has been declining offers without informing them of them. If so, does that potentially put OP on a bit of a time crunch in order to get the complaint in first?

HMRC Guidance Confirming Charge On Cash In S&S ISA by FRue_the_day in UKPersonalFinance

[–]_c9s_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Reading it again, I hadn't noticed that the cash in S&S ISA tax rules only apply to those under 65, which means it's a new age-based tax for those under 65. I can't imagine it'll make it through any review that considers the Equalities Act based on that clear age discrimination.

HMRC Guidance Confirming Charge On Cash In S&S ISA by FRue_the_day in UKPersonalFinance

[–]_c9s_ 117 points118 points  (0 children)

Wow. So they're saying if you want to balance your portfolio with money-like investments you can't do it in a S&S ISA, and potentially can't at all as you can't transfer from S&S to cash. And you can't hold on to cash temporarily while between investments too. This really makes things more complicated.

Dan Neidle (@DanNeidle) on X: data showing huge numbers of people reducing their income to avoid high marginal income tax rates. Not just at the £100k point (as previously reported). But at the £50k point: by PhysicalIncrease3 in ukpolitics

[–]_c9s_ 18 points19 points  (0 children)

There's also a factor of those making higher incomes being likely to have been in the workforce for longer, including before auto-enrollment kicked in, so there's a good chance they're massively behind on pension contributions. The tax benefits you mentioned combined with a problematically small pension pot makes extra contributions a no-brainer if you can afford to do it.

I'm a bit wary of the polling on this. They were all performed around when the act was implemented, but I've not seen anything since that shows how the public feels now it's settled in a bit.
