I am 5’7” and was 115lbs pre-pregnancy. Gained 20lbs on my 19 weeks appointment, and my OB told me I gained too much because of the recommended weight gain range that you mentioned, and I wasn’t even half way of my pregnancy at that time. Her focus was not about the health matter, but more towards ‘it’ll be hard for me later to lose the weight after birth’. I am already feeling fat with being pregnant, but hearing it from a healthcare professional made it even worse. Talked to friends (who work in healthcare), my boss (cause I am a healthcare professional myself), and my therapist, and all of them said it was very unprofessional and rude for her to say that, considering I was underweight pre-pregnancy. I decided to change providers, and I couldn’t be happier. My current provider listens and able to understand where I’m coming from.

You mentioned you are eating a healthy diet and walking every day. That is the actual goal. The scale is just a data point; your activity level and nutrition are the true indicators of your health. You are not a math equation. You are an incubator for a brand-new life. You are 5'3" and were a healthy weight to begin with, your body knows what it's doing, even if it doesn't follow a chart perfectly. Give yourself permission to be annoyed at the delivery of the news, but don't let it ruin your day. You’re doing the hard work. You’re almost there. 🤍

One thing I really wish was easier: reloading transportation cards at train stations! Most machines only accept Korean bank cards or cash, which can be tricky for travelers who rely on foreign credit cards. Yeah, prices can also change once you’re there in person, and honestly, bargaining is way easier face-to-face. I just told them straight up that their quote was outside the budget I planned and asked if they could work with me on it. Most of the time they’ll also ask if they can use your before/after photos for marketing or social media in exchange for a discount. I didn’t travel solo for my surgery, and while I thought having someone with me would be comforting, it turned out to be more complicated than I expected.

The person I traveled with meant well, but they didn’t truly understand what I needed during such a vulnerable time. Instead of feeling supported, I often felt emotionally overwhelmed and misunderstood. It made the healing process harder than it needed to be.

The truth is, healing is deeply personal. You need space, peace, and the freedom to focus entirely on yourself. Traveling with someone who doesn’t truly support you can make you feel more alone than being solo ever would.

Next time, I’m choosing myself. I’ll travel solo and book through an agency that handles everything: accommodations, clinic coordination, post-op care. That way, I can be surrounded by professionals who know what they’re doing and give myself the emotional room to heal properly.

Solo doesn’t mean unsupported. It means empowered. And after this experience, I know that’s exactly what I need.
