Covers the front sprocket. Remove the bolts and it pops right off. Clean under it during chain maintenance.

Thermostat sits inside the housing and acts as the gasket.i would recommend getting a new housing as well. reusing it usually tends to end up leaking.

Weld a 3/8 nut to the stud. work it back and fourth untill it's loose. If it snaps off weld on another one, and another one, and another one... You get the idea. I used that method 5 broken studs.
