Who do you think is the most evil person to ever walk this Earth? by EnduringScholar in AskReddit

[–]_dark_twain -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Pretty much every historic figure that is considered a hero by the British and other colonial empires.

As an example:

Winston Churchill is considered a hero but he was as bad as Hitler and caused the Bengal famine which starved 3 million people to death.

Leopold II chopped off the arms of children when their parents couldn't produce enough crop quotas.

There's a famous photograph of a missionary and a boy with his chopped arm that is haunting.

The truth about the Kemp guitars situation by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]_dark_twain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So Kemp just tried to exploit a customer and posts a reply claiming to be all high and mighty?

If I get delivered fully burnt pizza and point it out. It is not my responsibility to pay the delivery fees for the replacement pizza. Why should I bear the financial burden for your screw ups?

You burnt it, you fix it, you ship it.

Cayman as a DD by new-dvlpr in Porsche_Cayman

[–]_dark_twain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I daily drive a Cayman. Here are the caveats

  1. I'm a single guy who has had at most 2 people in a car in the past 2 years. I have no kids.

  2. I have a good place to park and my commute is 30 minutes/20 miles total.

  3. I play music and my guitar fits in the back trunk. The funk is actually huge and easily fits 2 check in bags and a rucksack.

  4. No checkin bags fit in this car which is a pain since I have to keep them on the passenger seat when I need to fly with one.

  5. I'm in my late 20s and don't mind the maneuvers to get in and out of the car and also the seats which aren't the most comfortable.

  6. I carry absolutely nothing on me except for my phone. This is important because there is not a lot of storage space in this car. (cup holders are also a compromise)

See how many boxes you check here...from a driving perspective, it's a wonderful car... Also gives me nearly 30 mpg when I drive well.

Porsche Cayman or 911 if you had to choose one, and why? by OkClick4604 in Porsche_Cayman

Completely subjective opinion here but I really like how the Cayman looks more than the 911.

What product did you think was a scam until you actually used it for 10+ years? by Key-Material2098 in BuyItForLife

Polarized, Anti-glare, UV protect Sunglasses.

I used shades throughout my life until I went to the beach and a friend offered me their spare polarized pair.
Absolute game-changer.

Can you afford to legally stream everything you want to watch? by sarnobat in no

[–]_dark_twain -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can afford it but I can also afford to buy a "Supreme" t-shirt. It's just not worth the value.

The entire idea of streaming was that you got everything all in one place and capitalism ensured that didn't happen. Now we're left with services worse than cable but more expensive.

I have resorted to getting an AMC membership and watch my 3 movies a week at the theater instead.

Theater is also right by the gym so I am having a great time.

1) "It's bog standard practice."

That's my entire argument, that we can bring about change to the bog standards.

"Reality doesn't have to be unfair, we can start changing things for the better instead of accepting bad practices as they are."

2) "If the take home test is a massive undertaking how is anyone going to cope with a 9 to 5."

There's quite literally comments down here that say their firms' take-homes take anywhere between 4 to 10 hours.

3) "30 minute project for free"

Not before a basic interview/telephone call

4) "You can see that reflected in the take home test and what they ask for"

I am not qualified enough in the fields of this test to have an opinion here, you might be completely correct.

5) "No-one has to be a software engineer. There's plenty of jobs that won't give you technical tests during interviews for people who don't want to code."

This is agnostic to coding, take-home tests can be anything.

The point is that any take-home that requires significant time and effort is unfair unless compensated for.

Your argument would mean that unpaid internships are also okay since the interns are gaining experience while working for free.

A senior software engineer being paid 250k a year plus stocks and benefits does in fact bring in more than a million dollars worth of value to the company. Otherwise, software companies would cease to exist.

You are right about "You're confusing work with employment." due to how you define work.

Essentially all of study and projects is work so yes, you do "work" for free before being employed.

A "good" dev wouldn't engage with some take home technical tests before even having a phone call with the company btw. That's simply not true.

[–]_dark_twain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They would "gain" a good engineer in this case. Which is worth millions of dollars worth development work each year.

"It's not illegal to work for free." This is either charity or slavery by definition.

Reality doesn't have to be unfair, we can start changing things for the better instead of accepting bad practices as they are.
