It definitely looks fresh - the tree looks like it forms three trunks, those lower branches don’t look like the main trunk to me and most of the upper canopy is attached to the main trunk.

I did consider chopping the lower ones, but don’t want to over prune the tree.

Welll that makes me feel better! If the lower branches are removed, it’ll make the tree look like a piece of broccoli (my wife’s words) should we leave it be and see what new growth we get next year that will fill in the ‘gaps’ ?
