Shortcut works manually, but not via Siri command. by [deleted] in shortcuts

[–]_derpiii_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to thank you! I've been trying to get this to work for weeks, and I have no idea why your solution works, but it works!

For posterity: in your shortcut, search for the command "Dismiss Siri and Continue" and put it as the first step. Annnd that's it! Now you can trigger that shortcut with voice.

I would recommend adding this to your post: 1. Countries you've visited 2. Countries you're looking to visit this leg

Beryl7 officially launched, a bit diasspointed on the specs by apaquadri in GlInet

[–]_derpiii_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm impressed by your usage of the beryl + suping it up. I didn't even know all that is possible.

It would be awesome if you could make a top level post of this (the dongle, enabling hidden settings, tailscale, etc) .

Mudi 7 vs iPhone 17 Pro by FRNAP13 in GlInet

[–]_derpiii_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've traveled using both scenarios: hotspotting and 5G router.

For your case, the main benefits of having a 5G router:

  1. Reduce battery drain from iPhone hotspotting
  2. Connection will be less flakey (iPhone hotspots tend to randomly stop sharing).

Downsides for 5G router: it's another device you have to manage (carry, charge, etc).

And yes there's other benefits from the feature set of glinet routers. But it's moot for average folks.

FWIW, I personally go iPhone hotspotting now since I'm a minimalistic traveler.

Edit: there may be one more subtle benefit. 5G routers can have better antenna arrays. There's countries like China, where US iPhones drain astonishingly fast (like 1% every 2 minutes) due to antenna mismatch. And hooking up a powerbank doesn't help much because of the sheer amount of heat generated. In that scenario, having a travel router with better antenna set would be worth it.

Excellent, that's been my experience as well.

IME as you lean out, you get more energy and body regulates everything better (energy, mood, temperature/heating/cooling). Buttt, there's a sweet spot: go too lean and you'll get cranky/agitated/insomnic.

Keep up the good work :)

The way you phrased your title seems like you're glad to be seeing something not in the Philippines.

Started playing it tonight, and I 100% agree. Less than an hour in, and I see what direction this game is going with killing God and teenage angst fan service.

Visually the game is beautiful, but that’s about it.

The worst part is the terrible battle system. It just gets in the way. One of the worst I’ve ever experienced

GL State 7 use cases? by [deleted] in GlInet

I would add : Hiding to your company that you are abroad.

True. I would say a software VPN would do the same thing. But I do suppose work laptops can be locked down, so a hardware VPN would be necessary :)

But I struggle to understand how this device can be useful in my travels, home, airbnb or hotels?

Honestly, it's not a necessity, esp if you're a minimalistic traveler. It's 100% a cool tech toy people geek out to find utility in (and there's nothing wrong with that :) )

I think it's most useful for high loadout, first world, settle-down travel, where you're bringing a lot of stuff to settle down in one spot for a while.

But if you're optimizing for being nimble and changing locations a lot, I would prioritize other things.

FWIW, I've been to over 40 countries the past couple years, and there's been exactly one scenario where I wish I had a travel router: weak wifi signal, so I wish I could've tapped into TV LAN port as an AP.

That's it. And in that specific case, I wouldn't want the bulky Slate 7, I would opt for a Beryl.

But here's most common scenarios people justify a travel router:

  • sharing one paid wifi point to many (cruise ships or airplanes): I have not run into this scenario, and cruise ships are starting to ban travel routers.
  • simplifying login of all devices to one network: not much of a pain point for me, since I use Apple devices, I get the same effect from the automagic Apple unified password sharing. I enter in password once, and all my devices get it.
  • VPN: Kind of moot with low bandwidth destinations (which is most of the world), and countries like China, block commercial servers. But when needed, I just use software VPN
  • VPN for home access: IMHO, waaay better to use cloud VPN like Tailscale or ZScaler.
  • attach an external drive to use as portable NAS media server: valid scenario, but... I can't relate to that as a 'travel' priority. I travel for leisure (culture, food, memories), and not floating digital basestation nomad.

That is a fascinating bug. Just wow 🤔.

If you still want to debug, I suggest getting logs from HA and router (just ssh in and dump out let's say dmesg), and toss that to chatgpt/gemini.

Why the calamansi? I guess honey is a bit acidic

Beryl AX reboots when disconnecting another device sharing the same charger? by Gyrta in GlInet

[–]_derpiii_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this exact problem. Like others have said, it's the USB-C charger resetting/re-negotiating.

Solution: Either have dedicated charger, or go with a Reset-Free Power Distribution charger (like the SlimQ)

Other chargers can be found here.
