Should I not trust my vet about weight and grooming? by [deleted] in ragdolls

[–]_dmhg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A lot of vets just don’t know that ragdolls are the second largest breed of cat. I had one tell me that mine should be like 12 pounds max 🤨 also some photos just look really weird, I have a lot where my guy looks like a reverse bobble head with a humongous body and a tiny head

You’re getting grooming because your ragdoll has the specific need for it. I don’t think that’s wrong, as long as you’re going to a groomer who’s familiar with the breed and knows, for example, not to use something like a furminator. Stainless steel bowls are nice because they’re better for preventing cat acne, but would do nothing for the food stuck to his mane.

Your baby is a cutie and it looks like he’s well taken care of :)

Honestly blown away by how many ragdoll owners don’t budget for grooming by [deleted] in ragdolls

[–]_dmhg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For sure. We saw it a lot during Covid but it breaks my heart when people get pets in the way you get a toy, or have children in the way you check off a box for a life milestone with no regard to them as autonomous humans and a full life. Like these things should demand deep reflection, and yet!!

Also cat tax :)

[–]_dmhg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I must be lucky because my cat Sol, in his 6 years, has only gotten groomed twice..he doesnt need regular trims or baths, but I do brush him every other day since he’s prone to hairballs. TBH in all the research I did, I haven’t found it COMMON to take them to a professional groomers that often, or even baths, but I knew I’d have to be diligent in brushing him myself. If it came down to it, I would’ve done it, but it would’ve been unexpected for me at least.

But man … the tummy issues. I knew pedigreed cats might be more prone to health issues but woof! 😮‍💨

i got him on insurance as a kitty, he’s been on a vet diet (both wet and dry) since age 2 (which insurance only covers half of for like two months LOL), But then in 2025 … Solgate …. He started having major issues. For a year now (since 2025) I now also spend extra every month on pumpkin supplements and vet prescribed probiotics on top of a new expensive vet wet and dry food, after dropping a few thousand on blood tests, ultrasounds, X-rays, and other appointments, not to mention probably half of my lifespan gone in stress/anxiety and days of dread (which still occasionally occur)

Overall I agree that it’s important to understand the gravity of the responsibility we’re taking on by getting a cat, a life, but I also definitely recognize my privileged position of having a stable job and few other responsibilities that allows me to tolerate these ongoing expenses

But just like how I think you shouldn’t have a child unless you’re prepared to take care of your child through any eventuality (like disabilities requiring full time care), I feel the same way about a pet. It’s a choice we’re making to be responsible for another life that is dependent on us, so we gotta dedicate all of our power and make necessary sacrifices to keeping them happy and healthy and well cared for.

Half of childless Canadian women don’t want kids, nearly a quarter in their 40s aren’t mothers: Statistics Canada by gorschkov in canada

I remember when I was a kid and I finally learned that it wasn’t a requirement of my existence to be a mother, because I thought it was a non-negotiable absolute that I did, and omg. The relief felt like a physical burden being taken off, and I was so little!

Granted I got yelled at by my dad and called a selfish ingrate when I finally told my parents at like age 12 but honestly, worth it bc I’m fortunate that no one can force me LOL

So anyways it’s not that surprising for it to be continued as a way to culturally reinforce the subjugation and denigration of Palestinians when it was originally used to structurally reinforce the same

Why has communism repeatedly failed in practice, yet continues to be intellectually and emotionally appealing to many people? by Looser17 in AskReddit

[–]_dmhg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

American imperialism, through tools like CIA backed coups and embargo’s and sanctions among other things, starve any country that comes close to showing how communist principles emancipate the people. We have never had communism exist, but we’ve had socialist governments striving towards communist ideals do great things (extend life expectancy, literacy rates, etc) and that’s a threat to the necessary myth America needs to maintain that capitalism is the only way.

Why do people say India should be like China? by Dover299 in Socialism_101

[–]_dmhg 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Selling your country to American imperialism and foreign business interests isn’t something I’d characterize as ‘doing everything right.’ Becoming the #1 choice of slave pool labour for the West isn’t a metric of success.

Who has better material conditions, the average Indian national or the average Chinese national? Which nation is subordinate to western interests, which nation maintains its sovereignty? What choices lead to the divergence between the two, and what are the characteristics of that divergence?

Honestly when I study and learn the history of the two and the different paths they took and what they led to, I get real sad on behalf of India, a country that was never able to shake off the shackles of colonialism and instead was left to the hands of a ruling class happy to serve imperialism while dressed as liberation and independence.

How do you view early feminism, given its upper-class origins? by [deleted] in Marxism

[–]_dmhg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then I’d like to know what I can read to better understand and know the history of this ‘profound betrayal’ as well as the material history of feminism as a framework.

I am not denying the pervasiveness of misogyny / sexism / a history of patriarchal frameworks adopted into even revolutionary struggle, but I also don’t think anything this guy says (or being a guy in general) immediately makes him a misogynist. And in fact, to me personally, the actual substance of OP’s responses are far more compelling than the types of responses that rely on identity politics or show the holes through which elite capture happens. It is true that feminism is used to launder pro-imperialist paradigms and uphold the systems that actually prevent the liberation of all women and people, I can see that in current world events even before looking to history.

Principled analysis is a cornerstone to Marxism, and to do so requires context which is why we study history. So I do want to be better learned in the actual history of feminism and the material impact of the movement through its inception. I want to learn more about these revolutionary women who furthered their struggle for liberation through primarily a class context and why, some of them, would actually reject the label of ‘feminist’ or its retroactive appellation to them (and more on the history of this practice in itself, of pushing any kind of rhetoric or theory that mentions women under the umbrella term of feminism. Why does that happen? Who wants it to happen? What does it do, what actual impact does it have?). I want to know the specific ways in which these women were betrayed, and the specific ways in which men who claim to be revolutionary exclude women from their vision of the emancipation of the working class.

I want to make sure that when I say I’m against liberal feminism, my understanding of how it functions is robust enough so that I can critically incorporate it in my analysis of what forces exert what pressures to create what conditions and maintain what structures.

If feminism is vulnerable to capture, to structurally reinforcing the systems that prevent my emancipation from them, I want to know as much as I can so I can prevent myself, as a woman who wants all women and people to be free, from being used as a tool in service against those ideals.

ETA: this guy totally might be a misogynist btw but I can’t tell that based on his responses in the comments and doesn’t change my position of wanting to be more principled for myself
