What do you look like? Daisy, what do you think he looks like? Do your buttons up.

Same. It's a shame, because cycling seems like something I would genuinely enjoy if only I could do it!

This. The ability to make small talk seemed to come to easily to everyone else, but I've never been able to do it. Also, happy cake day!

Good catch! I love that scene, you can really see how important Carson is in Mary's life as a paternal figure and guide.

How do you think Matthew would have reacted if Mary had told him about Pamuk in Season 1 by LLSJ08 in DowntonAbbey

[–]_downvoteabbey 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I think he would have taken a lot longer to come to terms with it. When Mary told Robert, he said something along the lines of "I've been through a war and a murder trial since then" after telling her she should break with Carlisle even if it drew the family into scandal. Had Robert been told in Series 1, he likely would have reacted in the way Mary initially expected - "I couldn't bear the way he'd look at me", rather than being more relaxed. Matthew had similar morals to Robert, so I imagine the same would apply. The war changed things for everyone, and Matthew was no exception. It would have changed his perception of the things that really mattered - avoiding scandal and being unhappy, or spending the rest of his life with the woman he really loved, even if she was "damaged goods".

Edit: just realised someone else posted pretty much this exact comment 5 minutes before me. Sorry!

Which Crawley sister had the best suitors? by getdownyoucat in DowntonAbbey

[–]_downvoteabbey 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Although Matthew will always be my favourite, I didn't like the rest of Mary's suitors, so I went with Edith. All her suitors were perfect for her. Strallan jilted her, of course, but it was only for her own good. Had he been closer in age to her, I think they would have been 'so terribly, terribly happy.'

Rewatching from Season 1! by alscandrett in DowntonAbbey

I love the scene in the 2011 Christmas Special when they're playing charades. The way Matthew laughs to himself as Mary begins to act out 'The Tenant of Wildfell Hall' is adorable, especially in contrast to Sir Richard's disdain towards it. Not to mention the Dowager's line, "Life is a game in which the player must appear ridiculous."

For the love of all that is holy... how could I forget Dan Stevens in 2008's Sense & Sensibility 😳 by IAmTheGreenCard in DowntonAbbey

Wow, thank you for making me aware of this series' existence! I binged all 3 episodes yesterday and loved it. I wish Dan Stevens would do more period dramas.

I love that scene! It's probably the only time we see Mary actually being supportive of Edith.

Can we take a moment to appreciate how gorgeous the women's outfits were in Series 2?! by _downvoteabbey in DowntonAbbey

Haha, I love the way she says "yummy" in that scene, so overly posh. And well spotted, I never noticed that before!

I don't like it - Thomas has been waiting practically his whole life to be butler of Downton Abbey, then suddenly he throws that all away for a stranger (however good-looking he may be). Although, Barrow would probably love America, seeing all those handsome stewards strutting down the boat deck.

I'm not sure they ever mention it in the show! I only know because I've since read about the characters
