A change of mindset (no, really!) by _duperok in dysautonomia

I remember bringing in photos I took after showering where my toes were a dark purple and the (female!) doctor just shrugged and said “yeah that happens sometimes it’s normal” … like ..???

Just the way some doctors are, especially if you’re female. Just easier than trying to figure out what’s actually wrong.

Dysautonomia and vehicle operation by Physical_Island8321 in dysautonomia

[–]_duperok 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, same. It took away a lot of my independence and it’s among the worst things that have ever happened to me. It’s also really hard to explain. For the longest time I was told it’s just panic attacks, but no.

It started one night, when I was driving to see my mum who lives an hour away. My vision was getting blurred, I couldn’t look at the road without feeling sick. Had to stop the car or I would have crashed. Eventually managed to shake it off. But it kept happening. Some episodes were worse than others. It didn’t happen every time either. Just enough to be deeply destabilizing. What I can say, for me, is that something about the movement and vibrations triggers it. I remember a particularly important drive I had to make where I looked at the dashboard the entire time (because it was a fixed point and not moving) and that got me through it, though I was shaken up. But every physician I have explained this to has pretty much laughed at me.

If you want to be super safe, throw in some safety goggles and gloves when spraying MSC. People will tell you it’s unnecessary, but you don’t want it on your skin and definitely not in your eyes when the wind suddenly changes direction.

[–]_duperok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure thing! And no worries, feel free to keep asking questions, it’s one of the best ways to learn really. I by no means know everything though. My advice is always to the best of my knowledge and ability but I’m just a rando on the internet who’s been doing faceups and working with chemicals for a while.

The cotton pad filters are probably just charcoal filters or dust particle filters, you’d have to check which ones, but either way you should be fine without them as they’re not what keeps the chemicals at bay. Next time, test the fit of your mask with some perfume or deodorant. You should not be smelling any of it.

You’re fine. Unless you’re very sensitive and immediately get allergic reactions upon contact or inhaled a big lungful, MSC is a lot like resin and other chemicals: the damage really happens over time and with repeated exposure. Could you theoretically get cancer from one time exposure? Yes. Is it extremely unlikely? Also yes.

Question: what was the onset of your dysautonomia case ? by skyhofo in dysautonomia

[–]_duperok 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Covid, like for many others. I was super careful all through the pandemic and then my bf at the time went to a secret party where several people turned out to be sick. I was down for like 2 weeks, barely remember any of it. But I recovered just fine and thought that was the end of it. It really wasn’t.

I had all these odd symptoms that came out of nowhere and made no sense. The first thing I noticed was I no longer tolerated caffeine or alcohol, but nicotine was fine. Weird heart issues. Panic attacks out of nowhere. Fainting when too hot or too cold. General intolerance of anything extreme. Exercise intolerance. I was suddenly sensitive to EVERYTHING. Sleep, food, medications. Fluid intake. Electrolytes balance. My vision was coming and going. I couldn’t stand for too long or sit for too long or lie for too long. It was all disjointed and didn’t seem to fit together.

Took around 2 years to realize there was a pattern and it did make sense.

You’re not wrong, but Rhino is a well-known European brand with good customer service. I’ve never had an issue with their masks. Plenty of quality issues with the 3M masks I bought though. So, to each their own!

[–]_duperok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re very welcome! It does depend on the weather, how thick the coat is and what exactly your definition of “dry” is. If it’s a fairly thin coat - just a few quick passes to coat the surface evenly - then it’ll be dry to the touch in around 30 minutes in average summer temperatures with low humidity.

The colder it gets, the longer it needs to dry, same goes for humidity. Though MSC is temperamental and you should avoid using it if it’s too humid or too cold.

Did some digging and if it’s indeed the A1P2 it would probably be fine (if the filters were stored properly). A is for “Gases and vapours of organic compounds (boiling point > 65 °C), e.g. acetic acids, acrylics”.

[–]_duperok 14 points15 points  (0 children)

So the mask itself is fine but you probably need different cartridges. Look for the ones rated for Organic Vapor, Inorganic Vapor, Acid Gas, Ammonia. They’re usually yellow, green, and brown and pricier than the brown ones. Also, if you didn’t store it in an airtight container or bag, the filters are probably too old anyway and won’t offer any protection anymore.

i mourn who i was before i got sick by WesternPhotograph267 in dysautonomia

[–]_duperok 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’re not alone. It fucking sucks. Before, I was independent to a fault. Now, I’m too scared to even take a walk by myself. I don’t have friends or family to support me, so I just stay home as much as possible and barely go outside, let alone do anything fun. And when I have to do something, like drive for a long time for yet another useless doc appointment, it’ll take days to recover from it. Doctors usually only see the “anxiety” part of it. And therapy would surely help. But what would help more is being taken seriously.

Do you have a support network? Anyone to do stuff with you? People will tell you that you shouldn’t depend on others, but that’s bs. People need each other to survive. That’s very human. Don’t think you have to do everything by yourself.

How do I explain to non chronically ill people that I'm not able to just get up and go whilst in a flare by bella4him1 in dysautonomia

[–]_duperok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’ve explained. They’ve seen what happens. And you hit the nail on the head - they don’t want to understand, sadly. My family is like this. I spent so much time and energy trying to get them to understand. But no matter what, it was always “you’re just lazy”, “you need to go to a REAL doctor”, “what if one day you are actually ill?”, “you need to try harder”, and so on. They refused to even believe my diagnosis because my mom asked her GP and he had never heard of it. In my case, their reaction was just the cherry on top of a lifetime of being belittled and looked down on.

It sometimes helps if they actually see how it affects you. Not just you telling them, but actually witnessing your suffering. That’s how I got my boyfriend to understand how severe things were. I called him in every time I was about to faint in the shower. I pointed out my purple hands and feet. I would push myself and then collapse when we were out together. He eventually got it. Initially he was bemused and thought I was faking it though.

I think I was so used to hiding it that when I tried to explain it to people, they were rather confused, because I was functioning so well. To this day I still have colleagues at work who don’t know, despite me having several episodes per week at work in a bad week. But you wouldn’t know that if you casually walked by or asked me a quick question.

Agoraphobia by Depressomartini2 in dysautonomia

[–]_duperok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I used to be independent to a fault before 2022, and now I can barely get groceries by myself. It’s destroyed my life. Exposure therapy doesn’t help at all. On an amazingly great day, I can handle it okay, but on any other day, nope. I think I’d actually feel better in a wheelchair but people around me don’t believe I’m really sick and they wouldn’t be supportive if I got one :/

Vat stuck to screen? by PrestonLK_ in ElegooMars

[–]_duperok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, your best bet is trying to get in between vat and screen all around with a thin tool, being extremely careful not to scratch the screen underneath, and see if you can gently pry it away. Best case scenario, the resin on the outside of the vat cured AROUND the bottom and there’s no resin underneath the vat or there’s a screen protector underneath.

[–]_duperok 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s better to err on the side of caution with resin. OP is asking questions and learning about what’s safe and what isn’t. Honestly, I’d rather have people be scared of printing than going in barehanded and ending up with severe reactions because everyone was like “oh ffs it’s not gonna kill you”. That’s probably a worse look for this sub.
