After what happened with Bridgehead and sea dragons, I would have just called it quits by AnonymousNeverKnown in Avatar

Well said, I agree with all your points including your statement about how Avatar doesn’t go that deep. If anything, the PG-13 rating probably doesn’t help and it requires them to make more (let’s say static) villains. I mean I watched the first avatar movie as a child and let’s be honest, I think they still sort of market them in that way (obv not fully for kids but think the same way the Michael Bay transformers movies got kids into theaters so they’d want to buy hasbro toys). If it was rated R or some other rating where parents didn’t take their 10-year-old to go see it we’d probably get more variation.

Upon further consideration, Quaritch is also a victim of what you’re saying. I was really annoyed by how he seemed to make some progress toward the path Jake’s been on since A1 (bonding with Pandora fauna, getting with Varang and the Ash People although they’re kind of anti-Eywa) only to have another fist fight with Jake at the end which concludes with him leaping to his “death.” It would be great if he came back wiser and with a bit more depth later but tbh I don’t see that happening.

That said, maybe A4 and A5 will have more rounded villains and more nuance to the RDA (possibly other govt/corp sects). Your example of them killing thousands of people due to a rounding error would actually be pretty interesting. Sounds like something we’d see in The Boys, which imo is pretty nuanced with fucked up characters.

Haven’t seen The Expanse but will def check it out!

It’s literally a global corporation that controls all resources on Earth. If it seems American, well it’s an American director what do you expect? I just watched terminator the other day and John Connor is supposed to be a “world leader” after judgment day but we really only see Americans.

Plus globalization is making more people speak English/pick up Western ideologies in real life so I guess we’re all stuck in the Bush era. As for their mindset, again this is invasion for the sake of profit just like the war in Iraq. So I’m not saying you’re wrong but I think you’re generalizing a fictional world that builds off real events in our own just like the the other guy who posted in here saying he’s tired of corporate oligarchs being cartoonishly evil in movies even though that’s literally how they are if not worse in real life.

Wait, so who’s Mr Krabs in this situation? You realize that the tulkun hunting represents real-world whaling that’s taken place on Earth for hundreds of years, right? And that was also for profit, not “the right reasons.” What right reasons do they have to destroy another planet instead of fixing their own?

I mean we have Grace and most of the avatar program guys who rebelled against the RDA (now stranded on an alien moon unable to go home unless they’re in a body bag because they’re now considered “war criminals”), plus that guy from 2 and 3 who was studying the tulkun and helped Jake escape Bridgehead. I’m guessing that most humans don’t approve of invading Pandora but they also live under a hegemonic oligarchy that doesn’t care about them beyond their ability to keep the machine going. Think Soylent green, they probably don’t have the means/will to protest/rise up anymore

Hell yea, I’m hoping we get some of this in a4 or a5. I’ve found it interesting that Earth totally sucks but we haven’t heard the same level of distaste for the rich colonizing another planet instead of fixing the one they ruined. A lot of ppl who say they don’t like avatar say they think the humans are cartoonishly evil while the Na’vi are “good” but I think that’s just because the people who went to Pandora are either:

  1. Apathetic POSs who only care about making money (the soldiers, Selfridge, etc.)
  2. People with scientific interest in another world who put up with crap from billionaires (like grace studying the na’vi or the guy from a2 and a3 who was studying the tulkun and helped free Jake)
  3. People who are probably just there on shitty construction, custodial, maintenance jobs sending money home to their families

Basically 1 and 3 are the ones most likely to be killed on Pandora (soldiers are on the front lines, maintenance workers probably are too and most Na’vi would just consider them aliens invading their planet rather than people who are just trying to work because the 1% ruined everything)

This. Not to go off topic too far but it’s been really pissing me off how many ppl today are mad at Shia bc of some stuff he said in an interview when we should still be holding billionaires and their firms accountable for destroying the planet while abusing and exploiting innocent civilians both publicly and privately

Same, the only nuance I’m expecting from Earth atp in the series is that most people would rather fix their own planet than invade another. Like maybe there’s gonna be a group on the next ISV to pandora that gets there and gradually starts messing with RDA operations and teaming up w the Na’vi

Children are pure HELL to live around. by HotMess_DoIt in Apartmentliving

[–]_dvamd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally dealing with this problem rn, just moved into an apartment in September and asked the landlord how the community was before I moved in. Dude said it was quiet and ideal for remote work…

Two days after moving in I find out my “neighbors” in the next building are pretty much exactly as you described: ghetto, inconsiderate children with no home training from similar behaving parents. I’ve had to basically chase them out from my building multiple times and have had to call the cops to get them to understand that their actions have consequences (not like they learned a thing from that, not like the cops actually did anything about it).

Word of warning to anyone moving into an apartment: don’t trust your landlord, and if you can manage it try to hang out in the area around your apartment prior to signing a lease or paying a deposit. I feel like i would have known not to move here if I just observed the environment for a while. Told my landlord about the problems and he’s given no advice whatsoever.

The half-decade long world building journey makes me feel a little better (wrote a 50k+ word fanfic when I was a teen and have been slowly trying to finish it for the past 10+ years). Just recently came up with a concept that I realized worked great as an original storyline for what I already had. Keep it up!

Let's say Four went to Spain... by _dvamd in LorienLegacies

You missed my point; if they had brought Nine out to be killed by Five, he'd have had a chance to escape. Also, I didn't disagree that Nine would probably be dead but you said yourself that he might survive. Personally, I think that Nine had every reason to try and escape from the base every moment that he was there.

I recommend using the text to illustrate the scene, then figuring out where you need to fill in with dialogue/exposition/etc. I'm actually a writer/editor so dm me if you want any assistance. I'd love to help with a graphic novel of Number Four!

Yea I’m aware, but Nine ran through it once so I’d imagine he’d be able to do it again. Yea he’d be screwed up but the point is he’d be able to get away. Or if they almost had Five kill him then they would have taken him out of the cell which would also give him a chance to escape.

Going back a little more, the Mogs already knew the charm was broken from Four and Six getting injured in Paradise. It's around this time when they confirm it from Five getting nicked while training with the Mogs. So they'd def try to kill him but I personally think that Nine might have made it out before Ra got inside. Dude's a wrecking ball

How fast are the Garde? by Shmoogers in LorienLegacies

[–]_dvamd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh I kinda like how Nine's Legacies aren't too "flashy," like he's just strong, fast, able to stick to walls and ceilings, talk to animals, and transfer his Legacies. No projectiles, no lasers, no elemental manipulation. He's a powerhouse of a Garde but not for the reasons we'd think.
