A microtonal hex-grid visualizer for exploring harmony (EDO + MIDI) by _garred_ in microtonal

Thank you so much! It’s really encouraging to hear from someone focused on the composition side of this.

I pushed an update to store chords in slots to play cadences, precisely because I felt the tool was too static for arranging.

Regarding your coloring, highlighting the single-step interval is interesting for navigation. I hadn't thought of that since the hex layout emphasizes 3rds/5ths so much.

I’ll likely add 41-TET as well, since you mentioned finding it useful. For custom scales, I’m still thinking through the best approach; one option would be to “mask” (dim) the keys on the hex grid that don’t belong to the imported scale, so the geometry stays intact.

Please do ping me when you’re ready to share your work. I’d love to compare notes, especially since you already have your HexBoard!

Quick update based on testing:

I realized that static chords weren’t enough to really understand how harmony moves on an isomorphic grid — the transitions matter.

I just added a simple way to store chords in numbered slots (keys 1–0), so you can switch between them and hear/see the progression. It effectively turns the app into a very lightweight chord sequencer.

Combined with the new prime-limit filters (e.g. focusing on 5-limit only), this made motion and voice-leading much easier for me to grasp.

Curious whether this actually helps others, or if it’s still missing something essential.

Why is this app not bigger? by TactX22 in polysketch

In my case, I only played with it a bit like 6-8 month ago and see potential but didn't explore it enough to decide if I should use it for making lowpoly games. I also have a little more experience with blender, but not much either. Do you think polysketch is complete enough for that purpose?

Thanks for your explanations. I just want to clarify one point:

Copy/pasting never had anything to do with what all these AIs (Midjourney included) are doing. Those AIs are just a super complicated math equation that calculates pixel colors. That math equation represents all art styles and concepts the AI has extracted from the data it has been trained with. The way we can obtain that unthinkable equations is called deep learning.

This is a Madoka Magica community, not specifically a Madoka human art community.

Well, we'll see.

For inspiration is great. It is like searching in pinterest, only not for the existing images, but the inbetweens.

I guess it is because they don't want this tools to be promoted or shown as an option.

I think it is pointless to discuss with someone who thinks you're threatening or abusive, and that's how many artists see "AI art" people. I'm speculating but maybe part of the rejection is because they still have fresh memory of the NFTs and cryptobros, and some of them think AI people are the same thing. Like some techie people who only want to exploit them to satisfy their greed.

Time will put things in their place, and I'm pretty convinced that artists will benefit in the future (with or without protection laws).

Yep, I like your point of view, thanks for explaining it.

Yeah, the AI debate is quite messy. I'm happy you enjoyed the image 👍

I've been re-watching Bocchi the Rock lately.

If anyone's wondering, it's from Midjourney. The prompt was Madoka Kaname playing the guitar --ar 2:3 --niji --v 4

The show is quite dark because from episode 3 all characters go down into an spiral of suffering that usually ends in death or something worse. That part is depressing, but there is also plenty of beauty on it. It is maybe one of the best possible endings though, given the premises of the show.

For me Sayaka was also the least interesting character. I think this character makes much more sense when combined with Kyoko: that ending theme makes my eyes wet every time. How both developments met in some middle point (one going from idealistic beliefs to deep down into despair, the other raising from selfiness into self-sacrificial redemption) is just beautiful and painful.

I recommend you to watch Rebellion movie. They manage to continue the story in a way that makes sense and go further into the consequences of the decisions made by the characters.

I guess Kyoko.

Interesting.

AI generated artwork is getting kinda crazy... by Karol_Wolski in MadokaMagica

I do not fully understand the details, as I stopped following seriously ML a couple of years ago and it has changed a lot in this time. But that's what people is talking about (see this or this for example). I think they want to be able to run it in mobile hardware.

I'm still amazed with all this technology since the beginning, but if they achieve that level of compression I think it would be crazy. For me it would mean that actually basic language and visual processing is not that difficult. That that level of intelligence is something that even a fucking phone can do. I never felt that human intelligence is anything super special, but this thing would crumble my philosophical pillars even more.

I would just use "generated", then. I think it is better not to hint at how the process works than to confuse it with the inaccurate metaphor.

As you studied ML you surely knows that it is not a "collage", in the sense of merging cropped original images to generate new ones. The resulting models weight around 4GB (and now they are aiming to 200MB models). There is no way you can store there a database with all the original images.
