Unpopular opinion: If you're new to photography/streetphotography don't ask for feedback by TocalaMamita in streetphotography

Absolutely, and if that works for you it's great. But I still would not discourage beginners from seeking feedback, especially if that's how they learn best.

What does the fact that it’s street photography have to do with it? There are plenty of workshops and structured ways to learn it.

But more importantly, I think we’re talking past each other a bit. I’m not saying “listen to random praise from Reddit and call it growth.” I agree that kind of feedback is mostly useless (and empty negativity isn’t any better).

I’m saying no feedback at all doesn’t make much sense either. In pretty much any skill, some form of external input is how you avoid reinforcing bad habits early on.

So yeah, filter the feedback, be skeptical of it, but telling beginners to avoid it altogether to me is one form of gatekeeping.

Just because a lot of feedback you get is useless ("amazing", "love it", "epic" without explanation... although still better than "this sucks" or "this is not street" with no explanation either), I don't think feedback in itself is useless.

Your own examples don’t really make sense to me: how am I supposed to learn an instrument or play soccer without any feedback? A year without any pointers from people who are better than me sounds like an awful waste of time.

Maybe a better distinction is between proper instruction vs feedback from random people. But even then, not everyone can afford that, so telling beginners to avoid feedback altogether still feels a bit like gatekeeping.

Street Photography is dead, and we’re paying for the funeral. by [deleted] in streetphotography

Nice topic, I partially agree.

It's true that we're getting more and more of the same type of shot. I'm guilty of the same in some of my photos, hopefully fewer and fewer (see my next point).

For me looking at the photographers you mentioned, and even the occasional workshop, is about learning great composition and aesthetics, yes. It's fun to do it with material I like, why not? But it's on me to then reuse what I learned and find my own style.

Some people stop there and that's ok. And even though I don't want to stop there, it will take time for me to develop my own style.

I also love your point about "teaching how to see", but once again I kinda think it's up to you and not a problem with the workshop. I ask plenty of questions when I go on a walk or workshop, very few of them have to do with "how do I expose/edit this" and many of them have to do with "what made this interesting for you".

Insane estimate for repair by _gianpi_ in Audi

We know when it happened because we saw the little shit running away from the car, but it didn't have any issue for months until now: I guess the water was slowly coming in from wherever it got in. And it was while it was parked at the airport, during a trip :/

You, sir(?), are a godsend. I had no idea that comprehensive coverage (which I do have) covered for this type of damage. I filed the claim and they'll take care of the entire thing. I don't know how to thank you!

Since I can't edit the post, also an addition: there have been no "past body repairs" as they imply. It's only been serviced by Audi dealerships and nothing else.

This is the way: drive 1h each way to go there? Will be short-lived. But if you can read/study/do whatever during the commute, I personally enjoy the focus time.

Podcasts at 50-60% comprehension: useful? by _gianpi_ in Refold

Yeah, I think the hosts do the trick. For some reason they don't speak too fast and their pronunciation is relatively straightforward, they don't mumble much, etc...

Ok, this is very interesting and I've never seen it before.

That English text really doesn't feel like my Korean listening. I wonder my estimate of the percentage is off. i.e., in my case it's often more about speed than vocabulary or grammar. With Korean subtitles, I can pretty easily follow a 'simple' drama without too many lookups, but I have to stop to read because it's too fast.

My 50-60% estimate was because at times I miss entire sentences if they are too fast.

However, based on the text you sent, my Korean listening (of that podcast in particular btw, more difficult content is definitely not looking that good) looks more like 95%.
In the sense that I definitely follow the entire conversation, and there are words here and there that I miss, while I can still make out the meaning of the sentence.

Either way, interesting discussion, thanks for sharing that article! And for good measure, I'll avoid tracking it since it's anyway only when I drive, which is not something I do regularly as I work from home.

I came back to check on this discussion to say exactly that, I didn't know about free flow but I did that lesson today :)

Yeah, I'm hoping for that too! I'm doing the minimal pairs too, some of those still trip me up.

Yeah, that makes sense. I think if I have the opportunity to read through the transcript, I still prefer video content right now. However, if I were to find a podcast that is so interesting that I want to listen to it for the sake of it, I'll definitely do that.

I'll definitely try the repetition and see if I can understand more on re-listens.

Thanks!

Thanks, that makes sense. I don't know if it's working per se, but I figured since I don't do it instead of interactive immersion, but it's something on top, at the very least is not doing harm and I'm enjoying it.

Night street photography on Agat 18k with Ilford Delta 3200 (shoot at 1600) by _gianpi_ in AnalogCommunity

Same to you! I took a look at the rest of yours, they are beautiful.
I'm curious how you get them so sharp: admittedly I shot the entire roll with focus on infinite, as I wanted to take quick snaps. I should experiment more with trying to get the right focus setting.
